To eliminate vibration I used both the 2s delay, cable release and LV with ES. I did look at the article and the sample of a 'good' Sigma. You are right the samples are not identical there. That is why I posted my samples for comments.

I am not sure what you mean by the decentering effect following the rotation.

After looking at the decentering tests on the monitor, I can see some small variations. I would appreciate some opinions from you all if you think there is a problem here. The test I mentioned earlier was at 28mm and f5.6. At that point the corners were much sharper, and very similar. I had intended to use maximum aperture as recommended by the forum article, so I re-tested at f3.5. I suspect another copy might not be any better, but am not sure at this point. I don't think the local store has another on in stock, so changing lenses would not be so convenient.

Also note that I focused first with the telephone wires in the center of the frame. I did not refocus for the corners.

Just tested the 28-105 again today with a better target. I realized that the proximity to the corner has to be close on all shots. When the target is closer to the edge on one shot than the others, those closer to the center will appear sharper especially since the test is at the widest aperture. There is no decentering with this copy.

The one thing that threw me off from the first lens comparison was that I accidentally compared a frame that was slightly off focus. Checking in the camera made this mistake easier. After viewing on the large screen it was more evident.

Is there a difference between the Rikenon f2 and the f1.7? I have a Sears branded f1.7 and also the f2 which came on the lower end Sears/Ricoh in the eighties. The 1.7 has great qualities at f5.6-16. I have not used it wide open much.

Thanks for the tip. I tested the lens as described here, and know that it is not exactly perfect at all corners. I realize that the corners will not be as sharp as the center, but some corners are sharper than the others. The most accurate test would be to photograph a wall that is precisely perpendicular to the camera using test charts.

The question is, what can be reasonably expected with any given copy of a zoom lens? What is considered to be a defect?

Yesterday I bought the DFA 28-105. I have not had much time with it, but it does seem to be equal in sharpness to my primes, and to have more resistance to flair. I am a bit concerned about one thing. I know it is not fair to compare it with a macro, but when I did compare the same shot, camera setup and exposure with the DFA 100 macro, I noticed that the upper left side of the frame was not as sharp as the right side. The left side appeared to be out of focus.

I would think that maybe I did not have the subject lined up evenly on both sides, but the 100 macro showed no difference in sharpness between the left and right edges and corners. Could this be a defect?

That is an interesting shoot-out in that the DA 50/1.8 compared so well with the other lenses. I am disappointed that the tests only showed the near center of the images, and no comments were made about corner or edge sharpness, which often matters in landscape photography.

The flare tests were not favorable to the DFA 50 macro, and even at the closer distance of 5 feet, it showed no advantage in sharpness. I would expect the macro to be better at the edges, but I cannot tell from this test.

In the film days i found the 28-100 zoom was the most useful zoom for landscapes. I got away from it when I moved to Medium Format film. I just found out we are bringing a friend along in our next trip in the US. That makes the importance of a general purpose zoom even more important, as I have to keep up with the others a little better than I normally do.

As in my OP, I really wanted a lens that might show the limits of the K-1, and since I already have 24, 28, 35, 50, 100, 135 and 200 covered, i thought a zoom might come later. It looks like I might be going for the 28-105 now and the DFA 50/2.8 macro later.

Sorry I missed the last drop in price a while back!

One of the things I enjoy about this forum is the interest in older lenses and their possibilities. OTOH I am hearing about the newer designs and am curious to find if some of them might bring out some aspects of the K-1 that I might otherwise miss.

You've got me curious. Are there any comparison shots of the DFA50 with other Pentax 50's, macro or otherwise?

That's easy. The K-1 is the best value in full frame for landscape, and I already had a collection of Kmount full frame lenses from the film days. Little by little I have been able to update my lens collection as needed and as finances permitted. I guess I am saying I to get the most for my money.

A local store has this one fo $90US and some M 50s. The reviews on this site for the 1.4 are very good, but don't know how many are about FF quality. Regarding the 28-105 WR, would it at 50mm be as good as the DFA 50/2.8 macro?

I should mention that I am a bit of a cheapskate, I can't see myself spending $700 for a 50mm right now. I am fishing for a good deal that will still justify an upgrade from my Ricoh 50/1.7. The DFA 50/2.8 macro sounds like a good suggestion for landscape. I have the DFA 100 macro and love it.

Also, I have the FA35/2, which is very useful for landscape as well. When shooting the same scene, I can see very little difference from the Ricoh, other than the FOV. I guess I could try the local dealers used 1.4 or the 28-105 for a few days, to satisfy my curiosity. I just hate to take advantage of them unless I am fairly sure of what I want.

Thanks everyone for the interesting comments. From what I have read so far, all the 50/1.7 pentax lenses are highly rated, but are they better than the 1.4 (A) that I mentioned?

Also, it is interesting that the XR Rikenon 50/2 is in the list. I inherited the Sears version of this one years ago, but not sure if I ever used it. Mine does not have an A setting and it does have a light plastic feeling. I also have an additional 1.7 that focusses down to 2' instead of the 1.5' on my main one.

After looking at the posted review, I see that the one I have is a different design than the one on the review, which focusses to 1.5.'

Since my first DSLR, the K20, I have been using my older Sears/Ricoh 50/1.7 manual focus, non A lens, which is quite decent at most apertures. With the K-1 it still does good, but I am thinking I really want to see what the K-1 can do and have the option for AF

Today I came upon a used 50/1.4 A lens at a decent price, but I really don't need the speed for landscape, unless it is a better all around performer. Which 50mm lenses have the best reputation for edge to edge sharpness at middle apertures? I also looked at the new 28-105, which has good reviews for a zoom. I am still thinking a prime might suite me best.
