Thanks for your reply, Wojetek. I did shoot in RAW. I used JPEG only during the test shoots, to determine the best WB setting on my camera. My knowledge of photo software is very basic, I am beginning to learn (Gimp, even MAC Photos in my case, no LR yet). Light conditions were a mix of daylight and fluorescent, obviously daylight diminished later in the day. Unfortunately I was not allowed access to the floor, it is very restricted. Seating area is elevated, about 1.8 mts from the floor. I see your point about the background, it is something to practice for someone used to take just landscapes during family vacations :-)
I definitely need a faster lens. My faster lens is a DA 50mm/1.8, not fit for this. I am saving one penny at a time. Being a family man with two kids about to enter college, I am on a budget. I am trying to decide between a Tamron 70/200 f/2.8 and a a Sigma 17-70/2.8 Contemporary. Any suggestion is welcome. Thanks again!

Hi all. Last saturday for the first time, I tried my luck on indoor sports, with my son's karate competition. Until last year season, I used a Nikon super zoom to capture his combats on video, he uses them to study his technique. Now I was also able to take pictures. After *lots* of trials during the day, I settled on shutter priority, 1/500s, AWB Fluorescent Daylight White, Center Weighted Metering. BBF at all times, with AF.C.
Camera is Pentax K-50, smc Pentax DA L 50-300 4-5.6 (kit). Floor access is very restricted so I had to stay on seats area. I cropped, sharpened a little and managed noise with RawTherapee.
This was taken while he was warming up. ISO 6400 and f/4 were both calculated by the camera, focal is 88mm. There are more combat pictures in https://www.flickr.com/photos/erobles/sets/72157651632854230/
If I learned one thing, I really need a faster lens, I think noise is the main problem during pixel peeping.
Please leave your comments, I really want to improve this, there are lots of competitions during the year in similar conditions. I am an absolute beginner, this is my first DSLR, and loving it.
