Maybe it's the Preview profile in RT that is throwing you off? Try setting up so that your monitor profile preview and output profile and then your color profile in Photoshop all are the same, for example your monitor profile, then you should have things looking the same. (I use Gimp so you'll have to look this up for Photoshop... I use Partha's color corrected version of Gimp though so usually set my output profile in RT to no ICM so I can set to my intended profile in Gimp or just use the default in Gimp...)

The latest gtk3 local lab build fixes the No Disk issue, but for me (I do a lot of batch processing) it has a memory leak issue which I don't get with the main gtk3 branch/build. Too bad for now because I really like the recent feature enhancements to the local lab tool.

Do you have SD card reader/drive by chance? I narrowed down the source for me to the multi-card type reader that's in one of my drive bays connected to the motherboard... I only use the SD slot in the card reader so the workaround that works for me is to leave the other card types disabled in the device manager, then only enable the SD card in the device manager for transferring image files then I disable it again... A bit tedious but I never get the error messages in RT this way and then can keep using the latest windows builds that are otherwise stable. If it's not SD card for you then it might be flash drives or any other removable media, and in that case what can help is to make sure you don't have any removable devices connected when you start RT...

The weird thing about it is that the Pixel board user Sguyader used to do the gtk3 builds and I never had the errors and started getting them right away with Edmond's builds... So I'm left to wonder if it's purely a gtk3 bug that started when Edmond took over the job, or if it's something about the building method, or whatever....

This has been my experience too in regards to Topaz... This is why I use RT for noise reduction a lot of the time for the sake of expediency, and will send my output to Gimp and Topaz Denoise when I want to get the best result possible.. I am the curious type so would give DXO a try except the last time I checked they are still not supporting the K1.

Tony Northrupt posted a review of free photo editors yesterday and here is the small RT relevant portion: FREE Photo Editors (RAW): Photoscape X & RawTherapee - YouTube

He summarizes with, 'if you're good with computers, you're going to like RT' and takes a quick look at few aspects of the app...

Yeah I should have mentioned that there are two ways to open RT, and I probably split my time between both, depending of course on whether I am editing a single picture or batch editing... I figured opening RT in batch edit mode would be best for someone new to the app, in case one reads about something that isn't there in the single image mode. (You can't get to the Queue tab, the File Browser tab or the Preferences when in single image mode).

A tip for those who split time in both modes (in Windows): I like to have Irfanview as my default image handler for super-quick viewing from the Windows File Explorer thumbnails. Then I used a context menu editor to add RT to the context menu so I can open an image in RT by a right click... I do this for other apps and associations too, like Gimp.. Alternatively, one could put an RT shortcut into the SendTo submenu, but having the option in the root of the context menu is obviously faster...

Open RT and go to the File Browser tab and pick a folder that has images you want to edit. You will see thumbnails populate once you select a folder then you can open an image from there which will open in the image editor tab...

If you spend some time in Rawpedia, things will start to make sense...

Yes, I should have emphasized that I use it as a basic editor for jpegs.. It's the convenience of batch editing that draws me to use it (I used to use Picasa for this back in the day). I can dump a months worth of photos off my phone and blast right through them and output for web/sharing in a jiffy... Then maybe a couple of them are worthy of the fancy tweaks... :)

Have you tried RT on jpegs? I actually really like it as a jpeg editor and use it on my phone cam shots. Sure if I only have one shot to process then I'll just use gimp, but if I am working through a batch, RT gets the job done nicely. I do have to qualify this with saying that I haven't really tested the noise reduction capacties of RT on jpegs, but everything else works nicely.

It's just one shot and the jpeg is extracted/processed from the raw file in the camera at time of exposure. So you'll have two files on the card of the same file name but with the corresponding file extensions.

Can't say that I can see it, although at times I think maybe I am seeing something in those spots but it's hard to tell... At times I think maybe I am seeing some super light hazy green or orange, but then at another glance it looks normal. On my second and third monitors (that are a bit darker) I definitely can't see anything...

Possible to describe what the false coloring looks like to you in the RT version above? I assume you've went through each filter/tool you're applying turning them on and off and none of them impact that false coloring, right?

Yeah I am a tinkerer and love all the options.. Just wish it had more options to keep me out of gimp even more, especially layers and selective edits and cloning/healing...

Don't know why the delay... Maybe waiting to get feedback that it's hunky dory before putting it on their main site..

Interesting challenge with the false coloring. Have you brought it up on the pixel forum? Especially if you provide some examples/comparisons bet you'd get some interesting responses there...

I've found the same thing. I tend to use the Film Like the most... I've still never got to the point of grokking the use of the 2nd curve. I've played with it from time to time over the years and read a bit on it, but just don't get it...

I also recommend Paul's wavelet articles... Great introduction to using the edge sharpening especially.

For Windows users, the 64-bit gtk3 build 4.2.1234 that was posted last night is running very well on my pc (everything seems noticeably faster) and the commit page indicates they've been busy beavers over the last month.

I've been using the last windows development build 4.2.1174 from two weeks ago but haven't noticed anything new or improved. The changelog seems to be reflecting lots of little tweaks and fixes, nothing major, but maybe I'm missing something as I didn't examine every entry...

Gotcha.. You probably wouldn't like my stuff then at all because when I have images that I really like, I really like to go to town on them haha...What's wrong with 'extremely awesome' anyway!?!! haha... I enjoy both sides of the fence... Has a lot to do with having a day job for the last 11 years that gives me time to multi-task on stuff like this...

The thing about color management though (as I am currently understanding it though probably still missing something), is that the working profile isn't as important as the output profile. I have my monitor profile set in the prefs, so I don't even see a difference in the working profiles as far as what I see on the screen in RT (unless I use that switcher on the bottom taskbar). It's the output profile that really matters, whether for further editing or whatever the output intent is.... I have been using Partha's recent color management build of Gimp (2.9.5) and trying to learn stuff , but it gets pretty technical. I am amazed at how different CM profiles can change the appearance of images.. I don't even have an objectively calibrated monitor so it's funny that I even spend time on this stuff..

Appreciate the comments on NR, SM. It does seem like it can easily become a chasing the tail situation in RT with NR options, which is why I usually resort to a dedicated app for NR when needed..But I have been playing more with it too, because I've been trying to do more and more of my editing in RT, trying to skip the exportto Gimp (or at least minimize what I am going to do in there) as much as possible.

I've used these film emulation curves (especially Portra) in Gimp for ages and Pat David recently made them into pp3's for RT... I've tried them and they work nicely.. I've tried them in combination with haldcluts too with satisfying results...

Edit: I've noticed in the past you like to use SRGB as the working profile.. Why so?

In Rawpedia, they say:
"The default working profile is ProPhoto and should not be changed for normal use.

The working profile specifies the working color space, which is the color space used for internal calculations, for instance for calculating saturation, RGB brightness/contrast and tone curve adjustments, chrominance, etc.

When RawTherapee was based on integer math it was wise to not use a larger working space than absolutely needed to get the best precision in the calculations. However nowadays RawTherapee is floating point and since version 4.0.12 the default working profile is ProPhoto (very large gamut), and there's for normal use no reason to change this. "

So I assume you must have some non-normal use for switching to SRGB? :D

Have you tried Topaz Denoise? that's the one I've been using the most for the last couple years.. gets the job done well for me, but I don't print very much and have never printed large (something I'd love to change about my photography).

I went ahead with the v11 trial then since I'm running a K-1 here... But got a message that the camera is not supported so it wouldn't open the DNG's. Tried it on a K-1 16-bit TIF out of RT and it works but the PRIME denoising is greyed out... I'll try it again on a K-3 high iso file at some point here soon but gotta get through some K-1 files first..

I'm looking at the site, so why you going with version 9 and not version 11? Their site was a hassle but was finally able to download the trial (of 11) and will try it at some point here soon (for kicks). Are you working straight from DNG's or TIF's or?

Aha I saw last night that there is a request to rebuild the windows version using "a new gtk3 build which includes the Hald CLUT speedup merge, so commit 5294d2 or newer"

Yeah, I don't have any WR lenses, but I still can't resist risking the splashies at the beach with my regular lenses... :D

Which version? I've been running 4.2.950 x64 Windoze since April 30 without issue...

Yeah, I've played with the K-1 files too and excited for my copy to arrive on Friday! The wait has grown to be fairly torturous since pre-ordering it on Feb18.

I hear ya on the constant aperture zoom. That would be nice... My kids are older now (youngest are 10) but there are still baseball games and puppies to chase around the house now! :)

Edit: I should qualify that a constant F2.8 aperture AF zoom is what would be nice from my persective. I do have a copy of the F4 A70-210... It plays nicely on K-1 from what I've seen already from others, so it will get used.. But still... :)
