The marquee bug of the moment around here, of course,is the Cicada (saw my first yesterday--which was quickly dispatched by a cardinal) but I was happy to see this caddisfly (because fishing! and also because, as a water quality indicator, it suggests that our stressed urban stream is holding it's own.)

Those Dark Paper Wasps keep hatching--onto the ice from yesterday's nasty weather. Took this with the Oly 300/4 &2x TC rig (because why not?) |

Dang, how cool is that?! It's a very plausible ID and the 100+ year old, wood-shingled house seems like prime habitat. The textual material I've found suggests that what I'm seeing now are early emerging females. The key is that they hatch in the Fall and hibernate so these gals are coming out of hibernation which explains the stumbling behavior. Now the question in my mind is whether the premature emergers survive subsequent cold snaps. I'm catching on that some of these insects which set up small colonies seem to have staggered emergences--which serve as a hedge against climate changes. Thanks!

These wasps seem to be year-round residents of my house. They always surprise me by showing up (on not-too-cold days) in the dead of winter. They stumble around as if just hatched &/or numbed by the weather. Anyone know what they are and whether these are in fact winter hatchlings likely to freeze when it gets cold again?

Given their bright colors and inclination to congregate with hungry birds feeding in the vicinity, I suspect these guys taste really bad. |

Some postage stamp-sized crops of a Hummingbird Moth (K-3 & DA 300/4). Up close, they look like flying crayfish. |

I've been taught that caddis are pretty tolerant of lower WQ, mayflies less so and stoneflies even less.

Ok, I just made that name up :p but it's clear that this 1" long moth has adopted a bird poop disguise. |

Awesome midges! Do you know what species? :p
Seriously, I'm glad to see there's someone else out there who's tried to photograph that engaging natural phenomenon. :D
