BTW, the Olympus M.Zuiko 150-400mm F4.5 seems to be something of a unicorn--none of the state-side outlets seem to have it. Just as well since I can't afford it (which isn't to say I wouldn't buy it if it were available. ;))

A very tough assignment for any lens and the plumage detail in that photo is as fine or better than I've ever seen.

Not a great nature photo but I just like this one I took with my EM1mII, 300/4 & 2xTC
Maybe because I'm a pisces?

Cool! I took a Pentax-110 on our trip to China back in 1984--my introduction to photography.

An aimless "Covid Times" shot I rather like.

Thanks! Yes, that's a female Cardinal. My Cantonese-American wife prefers the males because RED! but I'm a fan of the more subtle coloration of the females--which really pops in wintry conditions.

I'm glad to know it's not just me who finds the Olympus menus and configuration options confusing! I did give Panasonic a try and did indeed find the controls easier to understand but was so put off by the stiff zoom of the 100-400/4-6.3 that I bailed out.

Holding the camera steady is no problem--the Olympus shake-reduction is awesome! With a 300mm & 2x tc, I'm hand-holding at an effective 1200mm! But I'll say this: my hands aren't particularly large but they are exceedingly clumsy (always have been and aging doesn't help.) The Olympus EM- Mark II is manageable--but just. Anything smaller would be impossible. However, that it offers so many advanced functions, is so configurable and there are so many controls is a bit problematic for me--I often feel like I'm just one bumble from rendering it unusable.

Well, ok, it's going to get down into the teens (F) next week but Crocuses don't seem to mind.

I was tempted by the Panasonic system r/t Olympus but the focus ring on the "PanaLeica" 100-400 was so stiff it made the lens unusable and I decided I couldn't commit to a manufacturer that put out such crap. I'm happy with my decision.

You too, eh? Ripping up my rotator cuff was a major factor in my move to M4/3.
Here's another (better) shot of that Hawk. I like the other because it's clearer that he's struggling in the wind but this is really better. I'm looking forward to shooting that combo with lower ISO and slower shutter speed. |

Well, I said "I'm gonna get one!!!" and that's probably true but it may take some time to scrape up the cash. In the meantime, I acquired the MC 20 2xTC. Actually got it a couple of months ago but needed my son's help updating firmware. ( No gear or computers were damaged in the process so I'll spare you the righteous rant about how Olympus' new owners need to pay more attention to their users' experience with such things.)
I tried it out today and had perfect conditions (overcast and windy) to put it to the test. Luckily, a Coopers Hawk (or Sharp-Shinned--I don't really try to tell them apart) showed up. He was holding onto his branch for dear life.

It's been denoised and tweeked a bit in PP but (unsurprisingly) not as sharp as I used to get with my FA*600/4 + 1.5x combo.
(note, however, that there was a branch between me and body of the bird.) On the other hand, this was hand-held (ever try to hand-hold an FA*600/4? Or, for that matter, shoot with it in a 17mph wind? ;))
I'm looking forward to trying this combination out in better conditions but so far I'm not convinced that it'll dampen my interest in the 100-400/5.6

I'm familiar with that debate. It can get additionally complicated if the dam is holding back a century's worth of silt--especially if that silt may be contaminated.

Absolutely! I'm definitely getting me one unless I hear of serious issues. I'm loving my M.Z 300/4 but,,, |
