G'day Bob
- Sigma 500 is clearly bigger, heavier and less portable than 150-450, so 150-450 is a better traveling lens and can easily be used hand-held
- Sigma 500 works really well with the Pentax HD 1.4x RC, but the 150-450 is quite limited here, both in ability to focus and sharpness
- Sigma 500 is clearly a much sharper lens wide open. 150-450 works best from f8
- Focus limiter on 150-450 is a great feature not available on the Sigma 500
- Sigma 500 is screw drive so cannot use catch-in-focus like the 150-450

Also, in noting a previous post re holding the 1509-450, I have placed a wrap of velcro around the leg of the lens mount with a nylon D-ring and attach that to a carrying strap.

cheers

Adrian

I got the same lens back. CRK told me that it had gone to Japan but I didn't find anything in the paperwork that confirms that. It was a bit of a pain not to have the lens for so long, but it is back and perfect.

G'day Noel - for a really good focus adjustment check, place the camera and lens on a tripod and focus on a real-world something in good light about 10-15 metres away using Live view. Then close live view and use the standard focus system. If the focus moves, then adjust until it stops moving off the point chosen by Live view. I have found focus charts for long lenses to be somewhat problematic and can give lousy results. My own copy of this lens is a zero adjustment on my K3 and so is the other one that a friend of mine bought (perhaps we have all 3 lenses currently in Oz).

cheers

Not much though - I was having trouble holding it steady enough at lower shutter speeds.

A Rainbow Bee-eater from this morning. It wouldn't let me get close enough, so I took the "artistic" approach of keeping more perch in the shot.

.. and we can't miss that great melon in the sky. This was taken hand-held using the 150-400 and the Pentax 1.4x rear Converter with my K-3 this evening. Section is a 100% crop of the original. F11 (corrected for the RC, so lens at f8).

Better Beamer attaches to an external flash, so you need Beamer and flash plus all the gumph to support it like batteries. The Safari attaches on the flash hot shoe and uses the camera's in-built flash. Might be the same price, but not exactly the same thing. The Beamer is also bigger and less robust.

For the in-built flash, it only works in P-TTL at 1/180th of a second, so no HSS. When I want HSS, I use an external flash (not all have HSS by the way) and a Beamer. My external flash is a Metz 58AF-2 and it uses a Better Beamer FX-3.

A sample with the HD 1.4x Rear Converter attached. A single shot showing both the full size and a crop, both resized to 1024 pixels. The flower was circa 12 metres away. I stopped down just a tad, f9 (corrected for the RC), so basically 1/3 stop from wide open. This is just brilliant sharpness noting the extent of the crop and the fact that the lens is close to wide open.

K-3, 150-450, in-built flash, Rogue Safari flash extender, hand-held.

X-mode, 1/180th, ISO 640, f9 (corrected by 1 stop for the RC), 450mm (times 1.4)

When the in-built flash is popped up, the shutter speed is set to 1/180th, ie the camera basically enters X mode, and then adjusts accordingly. In Av mode, the highest shutter speed is 1/180th, but it does allow slower shutter speeds. That means risking too slow shutter speed to get a moving target like a bird. I find it better to use X-mode because I have set ISO to the front control wheel and that allows me to control the overall exposure balance between background and foreground better.
