Tuned it up a bit with NIK in PS and found the "Lighten center" filter in in Color EFX pro4 useful. |

One from last fall. Probably Ilford HP5 400. Canon A-1, 50mm. I think I was using D-76 +20% dev time. Cropped it, because I can and I wanted to. Maybe around 50% |

I also shot my first pinhole this week for my creative darkroom class. It was a three dollar paint can variety on ortho-lith film. |

My favorite shot from a local car show last week. I meant to over develop in D-76 by 20% but forgot that I had Ilford HP5 400ISO instead of Ilford Delta 400ISO. I think I ended up developing around 40% extra time by mistake. This scan was run through a Photoshop and NIK plugins, to make it look more like the print I made on fiber paper. In the printing class we were using two developers. Two minutes in Dektol at 1:20(dektol:water) for the highlights and 30 seconds in a 1:2(dektol:water) for the shadow detail. Scanning prints seems like a waste, at least with my scanner.

Some real dirty scans of a class project. The instructor picked random phrases out of a book showed us an artists dyptic series and said go. So I made a mask to cover half the lens and exposed each frame twice using the multiple exposure feature of the Canon A-1. Then rewound the film and exposed the missing segment numbers off a clock in a darkroom twice. Once in landscape and again in portrait. |

I love the tilt on this one. Don't know if it was intentional, but it works well.

Ilfosol 3 according to Ilford's instructions. Being my first rolls I figured I'd use it as designed. Ilford rapid fix as well, I like that it works for film and paper, one less bottle. I have Kodak indicator stop from when I was using Kodak chemistry. I have some 120 rolls for the 645 I just don't know when I'll use them or for what.

I like that this is on a hill slope for some reason. ---------- Post added 07-27-15 at 08:11 AM ---------- From this past spring. My first time shooting at a race. First night time shots. I had just got some Ilford 3200 in the mail that day, so off we went. Bringing the prime was a fun exercise because it forced me to frame up compositions first and wait for the action to fill the frame. I knew I wasn't going to get high detail action from far away and the lighting sucked. I like the gritty grain in this because it reminds me of all the dirt, dust, fumes and smoke that night.

Thanks it was fun, even though I forgot my hat at home and got a little to much sun. The film is a little stiffer than the Ilford and I worried about scratching it when I squeegeed before drying but I like the faster ISO. I got a lot of conflicting info online about what ISO to use, so I went with the box speed of 400. AGFA states to use it below 25? I guess it depends on the meter. I don't know enough about the different types, so I went with my experience from bracketing on the Ilford. I gonna wait till autumn or winter to try it again to get more visible tree trunks for contrast. They say the trees reflect less red then but I guess I'll find out for myself.

Another go at infrared. This time with more confidence and no bracketing. I just kept my aperture wide open and two stops down on the shutter. Starting to do exposure logs as well, this helps a lot.

I'm going with out of focus, as opposed to soft focus, in the face. Since the area just past her ear and around her neck a little further back in the plane are sharper. Very narrow DOF at that aperture.

Composition in black and white is very different than color to me. There are lost of things that are not very interesting to look at in black and white. Sunrises and sunsets come to mind as somethings that are very difficult to capture. The same goes for color as well, especially with all the over the top post processing. These are not axioms though. I shoot almost entirely film because I like that I can use different film but my digital camera will always have the same sensor. Legacy glass is a lot cheaper as well. If you can make brownies out of a box, you can process film. I was gonna do my first C-41 last week but one of my chemicals got spilled so that will be delayed.

Haven't shot anything in a couple weeks, so I went out to the garage and played with some toys. The light is an LED headlamp and I added an LED flood lamp from Wal-Mart in the second one.
Canon A-1 Ilford Delta 400. I was using various lenses but I think these were with 35-105 zoom with macro on top of some extension tubes. Or a reversed 50mm prime. |

Thanks. Ya I got a generic red IR720. I shoot a lot of landscapes off a tripod with a Pentax 645 and I've gotten used to metering and then putting on filters and recalculating EV. I kinda like it for some reason, sort of like a science project I guess. I was also wondering where to put the sun, thanks for clearing that up. I'm thinking bright day and small aperture.

I have a roll of that and the Ilford in MF that I'm waiting for an opportunity to use. Do you have much experience with IR? Any tips?

One's own children are the ultimate muse. Myself included :) Then they get a little more mobile and become the ultimate form of photographic frustration. Mine are now test subjects for new film and gear, that must be tricked or bribed with candy into compliance.

I like the perspective and the curve. A nice departure from "tracks converging in the distance." The light on top of the rails is also nice. I love me some trains, train tracks are second best.
