You are of course correct. Was thinking 'rust' as in metal and got fixed on that. The light bulb threw me. Must think more laterally in future :(

I can see the connection with 'flat', 'clay' and 'submerged' but where does the 'rust and figurative light bulb' come in ?

Maybe a partially submerged (viz. clay) old bicycle frame. ?
The only reason I suggested taking turns was because if we have a lot going on, some of the posts could get 'buried'. It's your game ;)
