Pentax K-1 Mark II Early Reviews?

I've read a number of posts (and a few unscientific reviews) on the Internet where a non-professional reviewer commented that the new K1 MkII has faster auto-focus than that same lens had on the K1. I expect that, in time, similar results will be reported by more qualified sources.

What impact the K1 MKII's automatic RAW denoising program has at high ISO's is of no concern to me as I always shoot at base ISO.

I do however greatly look forward to reading some head to head comparisions of the K1 MKII vs K1 when it comes to dynamic pixel shift (or what ever it's being called these days).

Photoptimist, you should work for the Pentax marketing department. You just sold me on buying a K1ii camera. Moving up from 25% with my K1 handheld, to 70% with the K1ii handheld is certainly worth the extra money for the K1ii.

No need for me to read any K1ii reviews or see any K1ii images. I finally understand the technology, that's all that I need to jump in.

Interesting...

Paraphrasing - the optimum hand-held, dynamic pixel shift motion would be: an odd number of pixels shifted, angled (or curving) motions, and smaller overall motions. I don't think that many of us can do this type of complex motion consistantly. So, would it be fair to say that because one can't consistantly move optimally, then it's probably a good idea to shoot multiple shots of any dynamic pixel shift subject? By taking multiple shots, aren't you increasing your odds of achieving optimum movement and better super-res images?

I wonder if the "continuous" shooting setting is available when in the dynamic pixel shift mode?

JPT, thank you for posting those two links. Very interesting information.

One of the links says -

"After reexamining handheld photography from many different angles, and considering all the possible ways of minimizing camera shake during handheld shooting, PENTAX instead considered if it would be possible to take advantage of camera shake. Instead of looking at camera shake as the shifting of the subject from its original position, the company looked at shift as the intentional repositioning of the subject. While the mechanism of the Pixel Shift Resolution System was designed to shift the image sensor intentionally for a certain purpose, engineers were looking for a shift in general: whether the image sensor is purposefully shifted as a part of the camera’s shake-reduction mechanism, or it is unintentionally shifted due to the photographer’s motion during exposure."

This statement would lead me to believe that if the K1ii was shot on a tripod with "dynamic pixel shift on", and then removed from the tripod and shot hand held with "dynamic pixel shift" on, that the hand held version of that image would be better.

So, if the image quality improves with motion, I would like to ask, "how much motion is optimum"? I have to believe that if no motion is bad, extreme motion (e.g. panning) is also bad. So, exactly how much motion is the perfect amount to fully take advantage of this wonderful new feature? For example, would someone with extremely shaky hands have too much shake? Or, would someone with rock sold hands have not enough shake?

I'm not sure how this could be measured, but it might be interesting to see early adopters of the K1ii comment (or even post examples) of hand held "dynamic pixel shift" (DPS) with varying degrees of movement. For example, a series of 4 photos taken of the same subject using DPS - one photo on tripod, one hand held holding the camera as still as possible, one hand held with a bit more hand movement, and finally a photo taken with an extreme amount of hand movement.

Here's what the Ricoh Imaging website says about the K1 with motion correction - "Motion Correction function
When shooting an image with the Pixel Shift Resolution System, the K-1 provides a new Motion Correction function. When this function is activated, the camera automatically detects the amount of subject motion during continuous shooting and minimizes negative effects during the synthesizing process.*"
While I can not prove that this wording was there before the K1 was released, I suspect that it was because these MC claims were the main reason that I purchased my K1 camera.

Also, just do a quick Google search and you'll find many early K1 reviews that express disappointment with the K1's motion correction feature.

.

Adam, I watched the video that you posted on K1 MC. In it you say MC "possibly eliminates motion artifacts in a scene". That's an exaggeration too. Why pretend that it works better than it really does?

Maybe there will be no surprises, but Pentax's pre-release claims can not always be believed.

For example - I remember before the K1 came out that Pentax claimed that the new K1 would be equipped with a new version of pixel shift that would allow one to photograph moving subjects. Before buying my K1, I had a K3ii and could rarely use pixel shift on the K3ii because most of the stuff I shoot moves slightly. So I purchased my K1 right went it came out believing their claim that I could shoot moving subjects with the K1 in the Pixel Shift mode. Well, we K1 owners soon found out how full of baloney Pentax's claim about shooting moving subjects with pixel shift mode on the K1 was.

I do not believe Pentax's pre-release claim that the K1ii will be able to shoot pixel shift "hand held". Based on their prior exaggerated claim about being able to shoot moving subjects in the pixel shift mode, I'm very skeptical about blindly believing their latest pre-release claim about shooting PS hand held with the K1ii. If some of the early adopters and reviewers can prove that hand held PS on the K1ii works without a hitch, then I'll buy one. But I'm not going to again make a purchase based on any pre-release claims from Pentax. Fool me once shame on me; fool me twice......

I am surprised also. I don't think it's a very good marketing strategy. Sony does just the opposite and has proven that that works for them.

I used to be an early adapter. I purchased the K3II and K1 right away. Like you, this time around I'm going to sit back and wait for lots of reviews to come in before pulling the trigger on the K1ii.

I expect that Kenspo and other Pentax Ambassadors already have the K1ii. I don't know why they have not been unleashed to report on what they think of it.
.

P.S. Just did a Google search using the words "Pentax K1ii review". The newest so called "review" that was shown was dated February 21, 2018. It was not a hands on review, rather it was just a rehash of the features that Pentax released long ago on this new camera.
