Most Pentax DSLRs support tethering and you can exploit that with one of the available free third-party software solutions.

Faster flash speeds cannot be achieved through firmware changes as the maximum speed is determined by the shutter hardware. The only tweak that could be made is to still provide a trigger signal, even if the shutter speed exceeds the sync-speed in order to support the "Hyper Sync" technique where you use a speedlight at full power to achieve a sufficiently long pulse duration.

There is already a firmware update for the K-1 available for download.

BTW, the K100D's debug menu can be accessed as well by a certain key pressing combination after start up.

Have you seen the website for the previous effort?

It was a start...

Well, Cactus cannot fix the (artificial) limitation of Pentax DSLRs.

They could try fake the presence of an HSS-capable flash with the V6, but Cactus like to keep their gear brand agnostic, so they would have to perform that trick for Canon, Nikon, and Pentax.

Cactus are aware that users appreciate the ability of brand-specific equipment to enable HSS timing, etc. automatically.

It wouldn't hurt, though, if Pentax users visited the "V6 suggestions" thread on their community forum and told them about their needs and wants.

It is pretty remarkable that they did not stop at Canon and Nikon support, but cared for Pentax as well, so I think it would be good to signal to them that Pentax shooters use their stuff and would like to see further development.

I've done the same with my K100D, but I needed an HSS-capable flash to generate an optical trigger system.

A firmware hack would be great, but most people have very little idea how hard it is to locate the respective code. In this instance, at least the code would be easy to fix. Other firmware wishes (like different movie recording modes or focus peaking during movie recording are enormously harder to realise and may even be impossible due to hardware limitations).

Correct, the only way to get a flash trigger above the sync-speed is to connect an HSS-capable flash to the camera (on the hot-shoe or via P-TTL cable).

You are right again.

Currently, there is no radio trigger for Pentax that it will fool the camera into believing that it is dealing with an HSS-capable P-TTL flash. You could make a respective suggestion at the Cactus Community Forum. Cactus seem to be the only one who are catering to Pentax users at least to some extent.

That's not possible.

The sync-speed is determined by the shutter mechanics and you cannot influence the latter through firmware changes.

It would be possible, though, to make the camera emit a trigger signal independently of the shutter speed. That would help quite a bit to fire HSS flashes like the Cactus RF60 off-camera, without requiring an HSS-capable flash connected to the camera. And as a matter of fact, this hack would be rather easy to accomplish (once one has located the right place in the code, which will be the major challenge).

Why PM?

Even if it isn't ready for smooth usage yet, I'm sure people other than RayeR would appreciate the current status.

Too bad that you have to take a break but it would indeed be great if you could return to this detective work.

Perhaps one day I'll be able to help myself but at the moment I don't even posses an O-GPS1 yet. :)

Did you see the respective post by zezo in the old "hack" thread?

He used raw2tiff to find images and was (very) successful. The links to his images do not work anymore, but I saved a copy of the 144.png file. Let me know if it would help. You can see a lot of images and icons in this one.

Are you aware of the fact that the AF assists light is only meant to come on in AF-S mode?
