Great review by f2 - Cameracraft September/October 2016. The review starts on page 32.

At last someone who does not obsess about continuous AF performance!
A 36MP FF camera is not an ideal action shooter's choice anyhow.

That price comparison was very strange.

If "buying used" is an option, the whole idea that there are only a few FF lenses for the K-1 falls down. At this point he should have mentioned the plethora of great legacy glass available for the K-1.

Also, I find the idea of the K-1 being too slow to take portraits preposterous. There might be a name for the approach he appears to be using -- "spray and pray" springs to make -- but it isn't "portraiture".

P.S.: I'm pretty sure he is wrong about the D810 and the K-1 sharing the same sensor and the K-1 ISO 100 actually being ISO 50.

Apparently you do not own a K-1, so perhaps you should abstain from agreeing until you have been able to form your own opinion.

He also said it is "fat", even though it is one of the most compact FF cameras available.

The sumo outfit interlude was funny but completely beside the point.

Well, it isn't.

At the very least, you get a third dial for ISO or exposure compensation. The rest is just a bonus and it is embarrassing to complain about it being confusing.

He was wrong on Pixel Shift on several counts:
  • It is not a system that takes red, green, and blue images in succession.

  • It does increase (colour) resolution.

  • It will outperform a Sony A7R II in a proper comparison.

BTW, he never demonstrates that the rear screen tilts up vertically to allow waist-level shooting, among other things. Why not?
I could go on and on, but I don't want to spend more time on writing these posts than Kai spent reading about the K-1.

P.S.: The FA Limiteds will outresolve the next generation of sensors and the one after that.

No, we certainly don't need enemies when we have friends like Kai. :)

+1

He is by far the funniest of the DigitalREV clowns but is not on form in this video and his coverage of the K-1 is poor at best. Earlier Pentax coverages (with Lok as the Pentax advocate) were also flawed but at least more informative.

I always disliked the pathetic trick to mishandle a camera in order to get views. He had to do it again; oh well, if one cannot convince with content then it has to be a spectacle instead.

Here is a link that skips the intro that is probably a failed attempt at trying to be funny:

http://youtu.be/87yGmD71nyA?t=20

N.B.: Great appraisal of the camera. Great stuff from Chris Niccolls, as always.

They didn't say anything stupid (*) so why the childish disclaimer in the beginning?

(*) Nothing stupid, but I didn't understand the remark about Pentax cameras demanding a lot of pursuit to be properly used. To optimally use any complex piece of equipment one has to put in the time to learn about it. That is true of any such piece of equipment and does not need mentioning with respect to Pentax cameras in particular.

Fair point, though, about admitting that they don't have the time to learn about every camera in-depth. Which may (or may not) explain why they received some feedback for their coverage of Pentax cameras from Pentaxians that pointed out some omissions / misconceptions.

Personally, I found they always did a great job with reviewing flagship Pentax DSLRs. I didn't get the alcohol-fueled teasing of some of Pentax's more quirky products at the end of year reviews, but they didn't bother me much either.

That was painful to watch.

Really, that is their appraisal of a fantastic camera?

They nitpick about the option dial selection not being shown in the viewfinder and claim "LED lighting on the camera except where you really need it". Probably the lighting option for the top LCD panel was turned OFF and these clowns are either incapable of figuring that out or have a problem with Pentax. One would expect better from reviewers, but it seems the DigitalRev jokers got deeply hurt when they were asked whether they are from Sony upon entering the Pentax K-1 demonstration area. There is an article on the web which is as ridiculous as the video in not giving the K-1 proper credit that references this incident. I won't link to it because such time-wasting nonsense does not deserve any visitors.

N.B. DigitalRev do not do reviews. They do entertaining pieces -- when Kai is involved that is, this attempt by Lok and Ian was just a sad attempt to recreate Kai's style -- that aim at informing potential customers of their shop about the availability of a product.

In terms of evaluating products, they are a complete fail. They compare lenses, not adjusting for FF on one of them and then stating the other is sharper. Or they make an AF comparison between two cameras, not only using hand-holding, but also two different photographers and two differently moving subjects in the comparison.

I started to enjoy the DigitalRev buffoonery once I accepted that it has nothing to do with reviewing gear.

You have to distinguish between what kinds of movement are addressed by the stabilisation systems and what kinds of sensor movements are performed to counteract the camera movements.

Both Pentax and Olympus address three rotational axes and two axes of translational movement. Both systems only shift the sensor in a 2D plane for four of these movements and rotate (but not tilt) the sensor for one rotational axis (camera roll).

The Olympus video illustrating the mechanics of sensor stabilisation is as misleading as the Pentax promotional video. All kinds of camera movement shown are addressed, but never by tilting the sensor.

Be that as it may, your posts are still off-topic and both you and readers of this thread would be better served if you were using a dedicated thread for your questions.

AFAIC, the best way to deal with situations like these is to post your first original question here with a link to a new dedicated thread that you created before and invite answers to that thread. Everyone wins.

Unfortunately, it is not true that SR mechanism is used for video as well...
Still a great camera. :)

They are clowns.

Once I realised that I started to enjoy their youtube nonsense.
It is not more than entertainment, though.
In terms of learning about gear, one needs to look elsewhere.

No worries. :)

It is strange how satisfying these unboxing videos can be, isn't it? :)

It isn't me handling the camera. It is someone from ephotozine and note that he got a camera specifically targeted at press people. I reckon regular boxes will look very similar, but won't have the battery installed already.

Same here, same here!

I thought I'd could restrain myself for a bit, but the temptation is rising. :)

  1. It is pretty much general knowledge that rotational shake is counteracted by shifting the sensor (not tilting it).

  2. Illustrations and real-world images of the SR mechanism show that (a) there is no room for tilting the sensor, and (b) the location and arrangement of coils only support shifting (and roll) but not tilting.

  3. A sensor tilt would achieve a tilt effect, i.e., tilt the plane of focus like a tilt/shift lens does. That would be (a) undesired and (b) do nothing to compensate the rotational movement.

The visualization of the SR mechanism in this promotional video is not informative, it is misleading. The sensor does not tilt in order to compensate rotational movements of the camera.

The sensor only ever shifts laterally and rolls around the lens axis.
