From what I've read you can figure on spending around $200 (more or less) for the filter alone if you go the IR Pass route. I think you're biggest obstacle is going to be getting the AA filter off of the sensor without destroying the sensor. I don't know if you can do it without removing the sensor or not but you may also have to realign the sensor. For $50 initial investment though, I think I would be tempted to try it too. However, I think for around $300, you can Have it done.
You might want to drop JensR a note and ask him because I believe he does (or has done) His own camera work (could be wrong about that). I don't remember his name but there's another guy here who had his Kx converted with a clear filter and put some sort of cooler in as well to keep the sensor from overheating.

I bought my K20d IR ready done from a seller in China off of ebay. From what I understand, there are several ways of doing a conversion, all of which involve replacing the filter over the sensor. Some replace it with an IR pass filter of choice (certain wavelength), or a clear piece and then use IR filters on the lens. There are companies that will convert them, suggest you do a search here on the forum (start at the bottom of the page in related threads). If you want to do it yourself, the most expensive part is going to be the sensor filter. Personally, I wouldn't screw with it myself.
The two methods have pros and cons. With the IR pass filter over the sensor, you don't have to worry about refocusing to the IR mark on the lens (I've yet to find a lens that won't work in both AF and MF on my K20d. It's entirely possible that the person who did the conversion recalibrated the focus system but I don't have to refocus MF lenses either). You can see everything normally in the viewfinder. The pass filter on my camera is 680nm if I remember correctly. Important because with the clear filter option, you can then choose the wavelength you want to use and you aren't stuck with just one. I don't know it for a fact, but I'm Guessing (from my film experience) that you have to adjust focus when you have the filter on the front of the lens. IR light rests just above what you actually see (or below, don't remember which).
