Not to derail a 13+ year thread with over 7k replies, does anyone know how to view just your own replies in a given thread?

Other than this reply, most of mine on this thread (typically three times a year for the fall, spring, and summer semesters) are these tallies. I've been entering that for two years or more.

Trends?
Digital: More Canon, less Nikon, Pentax always between 0-2 per semester. Mirrorless quality has improved, but less Canon and more Sony, typically 0-3 per semester.

Film: More Minolta, Nikon, Pentax, and less Canon and Olympus, but I'd have to study my tallies and chart them for accuracy.

IMO no. It would make for a good survey, but I believe most Pentaxians shoot only Pentax, and a few have another brand. I perceive most people who shoot digital, only shoot digital.
Those that shoot film, may only shoot digital with their phones. And many Pentaxians only have the kit lens and one body.

BUT no doubt, there is a spectrum from your multisystem collections in both digital and film to lesser gear.

I also think there are gearheads for every brand and if anything, Pentaxians tend to be less about the gear than Sony, Canon, and Nikon.

Now, does that give everyone fodder to post a response for the giveaway?

I also shoot Nikon and if the Nikon Forum has super-secret cabal meetings, I have yet to be invited. One thing that makes Pentaxians rare is the activity on this Pentax Forum! Most the other forum threads die after about five replies.

It's not complete because the user needs to share their location and no doubt, many do not wish to do so. To me that's fine; I don't care about the people who want to remain anonymous but if they want to share their location, that tells me they may be more willing to meet up or buy/sell locally, etc.

How many forums offer this feature? I think it helps to reinforce that given your location, you may be very rare or not uncommon. This sort of user database map would be useless to a Canon, Nikon, or Sony user IMO.

It is true that Canon, Nikon, and Sony have pro support so that if you need an extra body or lens in a pinch, there is a network and inventory of loaners in the big markets.

However, there is also a very practical side to shooting shoulder to shoulder with other photographers and when your last battery goes down, you could beg a favor of a spare battery from another photographer.

And there is also a huge snob factor that "real" pros don't shoot with anything other than Canon, Nikon, or Sony. I dealt with this on film sets and in studios. It gets really tiring either ignoring the ignorant attitudes or comments, or defending your Pentax, but the day you join the Empire, it's a huge relief like you now have the passport and won't be questioned.

I think calling it a 'sell out' is a bit judgmental. My two SUVs were a Mitsubishi Montero (Pajero). Super reliable and capable, but when it came to service and parts, it was a problematic. Did I sell out switching to Honda or Toyota? I didn't want to deal with hard to find parts and a limited pool of mechanics.

This summer I have two high school photo classes and every week we are taking a field trip. With a whole class of students with DSLRs (and some mirrorless) the stares and comments from others is predictable and the comments or questions annoying:
"Oh look, it's a bunch of photographers."
"Are you taking pictures?"
"What are you shooting?"
"I used to have a fancy camera like that, but my smartphone takes better pictures."

Ugh. No wonder half the students where air pods/ear pods and listen to music constantly....which is my personal pet peeve.

Unlikely: It would probably take five. Let's just say, it's unnatural and could have consequences in our understanding of quantum photography.

When it comes to DSLRs, the danger of older used cameras can become parts and repairs.

Avocation=hobby or minor occupation. The least expensive DSLRs are being bought by cautious parents, unsure if photography will become an avocation. If it was an avocation, then the budget usually increases. Much of the decision at home starts with what is already in their closet. Canonites, Nikonians, and Pentaxians generally stick to their biases and familiarity and convenience of swapping parts.

It is uncommon for a parent that has always shot with Canon to be okay with their child wanting to go rogue with a non-Canon. If the student has a job and is independent, then for their own identity, they will intentionally switch to another brand.

For avocation, I think you can't go wrong with most medium level DSLR like the Canon 60D or 80D, Nikon D7200 or D500 or D750, and most not too old Pentaxes that have dual wheels and is weather sealed.

A good beginner camera for a one and done student will be different than a good beginner camera for a hobbyist or a freelancer or a pro. Also different priorities depending on what they want to shoot. Canon has an edge for sports and video. Nikon and Pentax is better for landscapes, street photography, higher contrast and low lighting.

Also as I've mentioned before, in some circles, the brand will get you in the door or will keep you out. It's a simpleton's gate keeper, but if you have no control over the bias, make your life easier and carry that brand. It's why I switched from Minolta to Nikon when I was a young pro.

Although Pentax may consider the K70 their gateway entry level DSLR because it's their least expensive DSLR, I do not because for most beginners, price is a top priority.

Currently in USD:
Canon EOS Rebel T100 with kit lens: $379
Canon EOS Rebel T7 with kit lens: $479
Nikon D3500 with kit lens: $650
Pentax K70 with kit lens: $677 (current on sale price)

Do you get what you pay for? Well I would consider the Nikon D3500 worth the cost difference with the Canon T100 or T7, but over priced compared to the Pentax K70.

Is the K70 in its own league with the features, quality, design? Yes, far superior. But for students? The average family that spends hundreds on a new phone, getting a DSLR is a big ask if the K70 is $300 more than the T100...nearly double the price.

To help students that don't have 'hand me downs' from friends and family, I do send them info on this and highly recommend the K70. But this semester, all the new cameras in class were in the least expensive category plus a few Nikon D3500 probably because it's sold at the local BestBuy or camera store.

My next batch of students will be in January. I hope to see a few new Pentaxians in the new year.

Tallying the cameras in my film, digital photography, and videography classes, for the first time, not a Pentax in sight: Canon 20, Nikon 14, Minolta 2, Sony 2, Fujifilm 1.

Rare indeed because there are usually at least a couple Pentax 35mm SLRs and the discontinuation of DSLRs except Pentax. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Pentax sold a solid but entry level DSLR, there is a market. And for the first time since 2010, I now have more students taking my film photography classes than my digital.

I think there are several reasons in my class I am seeing more DSLR than mirrorless:

a) I email the students and parents in a couple months before the class starts. My email explains why I believe the DSLR is better for the class, although I give them the option for mirrorless. Students and parents, in most cases, read the email and understand the pros of a DSLR that I explain for someone beginning and learning photography.

b) Most of the student cameras belong to a relative or a friend. There are more idle (not being actively used by the family or friend) DSLRs than mirrorless.

c) I emphasize the importance of lenses. Most with DSLRs have multiple lenses. Most with mirrorless have only one lens.

d) Most teenagers hate sticking out from the peers. Not that they are sheep, but their post tweenage egos aren't confident enough to be different and use the only non-Canon/Nikon or non-DSLR in the class.

e) The grapevine (or in Hawaii the coconut wireless), especially in this age of social media is very active. The DSLR users see how much extra time I have to help the mirrorless to try to navigate controls on the much smaller cameras with less buttons, knobs, wheels, etc.

Not to intentionally make a double meaning, but it makes me also think, not everyone wants to be mirrorless. But sometimes folks end up mirrorless due to their circumstances.

For a variety of reasons, I encourage DSLRs over mirrorless, but for whatever reason, the most common mirrorless have been Sony with Lumix or Olympus on occasion.

I do have a Fujifilm Instax that is a fun instant camera and they now have the Fujifilm Instax Mini LiPlay Hybrid Instant Camera which is pretty amazing so you only print shots you want to and can wireless have the camera print out digital shots from other cameras.

That's true, but I also know if it's a new Pentax, I as the teacher was Ricoh's marketing and it worked to help sell Pentax at roughly a 1:43 ratio.
