Richard, no, I didn't know there was a Bamaga Pentax lover! It's true then, we are everywhere!

The yellow aircraft is in fact an Air Tractor 802 but mostly set up for aerial fire bombing these days and I don't think it will be doing any spraying for the rest of its life. It belongs to Kennedy Air Ag, based in Gunnedah and they are contracted to the NSW RFS.

I use a K-7 these days. I think that the Air Tractor was taken with my old K10. That shot of the helicopter was during the recent S44 fires over at Grafton, so the light in the morning was really a bit different too. I had the 16-50mm on and its my love/hate lens! Sometimes I love what it does, others it drives me insane!

I've sent you a PM too.

Hi Richard,

It is the wreck of a DC3 up near Bamaga, Cape York. It crashed there in 1945. Apparently, whilst circling to land at the Bamaga airstrip during the early hours of the morning, it struck the hill near the strip and crashed.

There are a couple of wrecks up around the airfield there as it was pretty active during the Second World War. You can still see the wreck of the Bristol Bomber and if you feel like braving the mozzies, you'll find a Kitty Hawk as well. Down in Mareeba, there is a great private military museum which has a P39 AiraCobra which was partially restored after crash landing up on Cape York and then being destroyed by the military as they blew all these aircraft's noses off, destroying any munition left in them.

I don't just photograph crashed aircraft either!

In my spare time, I volunteer in our Rural Fire brigade and specifically work with aviation. I was over near the north coast of NSW recently helping on an airbase and snuck out onto the strip early one morning to grab some photos. This was one of them!

And another fave aeroplane subject...these are generally seen around where I live a lot!

Is this thread only for fixed wings? Is there another one for rotary?

Wow, some great inspiring shots here.

Probably not the best way to view a plane but it is one with history and that is just as good a reason to photograph it I think.
