That's why almost every serious birder I know has some form of "beamer" flash extender. Google "Better Beamer" or "Flash Extender" and you'll find out, bird photogs don't leave lighting to Mother Nature, they take matters into their own hands with some really elaborate contraptions!
I haven't succumbed yet to the urge,, but it's crossed my mind a few times recently when some great bird shots ended up in the Recycle Bin because the lighting was just horrible.
