here's a thread on the topic talking about dcraw which is the engine in rawtherapee I believe.

I'm not really keen on command line programs, was hoping for a more GUI option that would allow export of the 4 "layers" into photoshop.
If I have to learn a whole bunch of software just to use pixel shifted images, I think the path of least resistance will be to ignore the feature all together.
Kinda like hybrid vehicles. One day there won't be a 10k premium on hybrid cars and then I'll have a lot more interest.

Someone get the squirrels some pixel shifted RAW files so they can write up a definitive tutorial on extracting the 4 images as separate layers for control of motion artifacts.
I want to get excited about pixel shifting, but I just can't if the only control I have over an image is a single Sharpness slider or letting the camera make a jpeg for me.
