Ok, those are some decent arguments...I definitely agree with you about "shill bidding"...now that is unethical.
Although sniping still seems a little bit wrong, at least from the eBay designers perspective. What you are describing is essentially a silent auction, where no one knows what the others are bidding, and whoever puts in the highest "silent" bid wins. This gives no one extra information about other peoples intent, which is what you are doing by sniping. Would you be OK operating in that kind of eBay? That's essentially what eBay would be if everyone sniped, just keep that in mind.
I'll wrap up by saying that I don't really care that snipers exist...sure I have sniped in the past, it's hard not too during periods of LBA :). I just want to point out that it does change the dynamics of an auction, possibly not what eBay designers had in mind...or maybe it was, I don't know.

What's the difference between sniping and just putting in that bid long before the auction ends? By sniping, you are getting more people interested in it because it remains at a lower price longer. If you put in your high bid earlier (and other people do as well), then the higher price will deter possible snipers. It's not like you have to get into "bidding wars". Just put your original bid in and go. No extra sniping software necessary. eBay should just find a way to ban those things anyway, that's not how the system was meant to be used...
