Yes and no. Yes you're cropping the edges and corners which are usually the problematic parts of a lens, but what remains is being magnified more so you'll more readily see its flaws. If you use a lens with good resolving power then it's all positive.

DOF is mighty thin at that range - the eye is in focus but the cheek isn't? I'm really liking everything I see from this lens so far though.

Certainly the DFA 50 is not in my price range, but a higher rate of introduction might allow for a little more variety on the types of lenses introduced. When you only introduce a single lens per year, of course it's going to be a top-end expensive lens because it wouldn't make economic sense to do anything else.
I also worry for the Pentax ecosystem itself.

Pentax can't sell them if they don't design them first. Their product introduction rate is really pitiful.

Get the lens and take a picture of the house, then you'll have something to remember it by.

Hopefully that just means it's already in the shipping department and it's too late to stop.

It also might be intentional to try to create some buzz for the brand, I didn't even think of that. Something that's unobtainable is always just a little more desirable.

I admit it was pure speculation, which is why my first two words were "I think".
As far as negative perceptions, which is more negative - that Pentax was being overly conservative, or that they are totally clueless when it comes to projecting demand? In any case it's a problem that is easily rectified, and I do consider it a positive sign overall. I notice you didn't take exception to that part of my statement.

I think it's more down to over-conservative bean-counters at Pentax. They refused to authorize a realistic amount of up-front build without demonstrated demand.
On the other hand it's probably a positive signal for green-lighting similar projects at headquarters.

Does Pentax play the Black Friday game? I know they don't for camera bodies, not sure about lenses.
