I bought this lens because I was looking for a cheap compact zoom in a K-mount for my Sony A6000. Whilst I use another body I still love the handling of the Pentax k mount lenses of the late 70s and early 80s. This was actually my first A series lens - I have a bunch of the earlier non A lenses which I used on an ME-Super.
To be honest this was a bit of a punt. The lens was mine for $28 so hey ho - could be useful , could be relegated to the back of the cupboard. I tried the lens out in the Autumn when I got it. To be honest I was disappointed - I'd also bought another $28 bargain - a Tokina zoom of similar vintage and it was much better. The Pentax just seemed a lot softer by comparison and lacking a certain something.
That said I really liked the package so I was out yesterday and thought I'd give it another go and see if I could find it's sweet spot. I'd be left wondering if it was out somehow or if there where a certain FL/ F stop where it would improve. So I gave it a dusting down and cleaned the front and rear to be doubly sure.
The results were a *lot* better. The shots below were all taken at f8 and most at the 35mm end. The closeups are actually nearer if not 70mm by way of comparison. THE LENS SAMPLES
The lens has redeemed itself. Certainly within the context of VFM. I'd probably defer to my primes most of the time but when I'm out and about and don't want to keep changing lenses (or my family start wingeing) then it's not a bad lens. I am wondering if last year I was relying on focus peaking too much. Checking it yesterday it seemed like using focus mag worked a lot better especially at infinity for a few shots. So perhaps I just need to pay a little more attention !
