I've just been rediscovering the joys of bokeh while scanning a few 35mm slides taken with the 400 f/5.6 or 300 f/4 wide open - in particular the use of backgrounds like this that can be read, and contribute to the setting without making the subject harder to read. Much as I love abstract defocused backgrounds, this type of scene (and I'm sure there are many better examples) is where bokeh really comes into its own IMHO rocky shore cormorants by Graham Hobbs, on Flickr
