The three knee-jerk sticks (if such a thing exists) that reviewers beat Pentax with are video, AF and lens availability, and it would be nice to think that if these were sorted out reviews would all glow. It would be nice, but experience and observation (not just of Pentax) suggest that other things would be looked for - the only difference is that there would be a grace period where there wasn't a lazy consensus about what the problems are.

You'd almost think they weren't interested in attracting traffic to the stand, wouldn't you?

I've been meaning to say for a couple of weeks, bur not got round to it :D - I'm interested that there is still not even a mock-up of the 85/1.4 on display at Photokina, despite it being scheduled for next year -I'm wondering if this is a new policy, or there's something they don't want to show and can't hide with tape...

I don't think that the road map suggests that, but it's certainly time to see a prototype, even if non-working, I reckon

In the end, the D FA 50:1.4 has put down a marker that RI are serious and that they want to reclaim Pentax's position as a top lens maker - and yes, second to the 50, 85 is a must have prestige showcase lens, and they will get it right rather than quick.

To be fair, I was lucky to get mine on an amazing flash sale - the RRP at the time was £1,799 (now £1,999) and I got it for £1,299 - I could never have afforded the full price then, let alone now - but it's worth keeping an eye on prices - these things do happen :) - I'm pretty sure that srs microsystems in the UK export to the EU - might be worth checking generally - the UK is not cheap for camera stuff, but neither is most of the EU

It just seems an odd one to be putting resources into when that range is covered and there are still holes in the line-up - and 20-19 is quite soon if they have to put in weather sealing and their own lens coatings, finish etc.

I personally think that the prestige lenses are what's most needed - the lenses that make people sit up and notice Pentax, or consider the system just for that lens. The 70-200/4 is not a * lens and will probably be based on the Tokina as part of some sort of reciprocal deal (based on sudden appearance near date) - a useful fill-in for Pentaxian landscapers, but not a drawcard. If they can do for the already excellent 85mm what they did for the 50mm, a few non-Pentaxians are going to want one!

I think also that you can't overestimate the value of prestige - a prestige line only has to break even or not lose too much to be worth it for a company - customers are more likely to trust the more run of the mill products if they know that the company can produce market-leading excellence - investment in the high end is what made Nikon a successful brand for that reason

I think that's where the Tokina link-up is vital - other folks with other systems will get the chance to use it and provide sme revenue for RI, and it will be a great repuation enhancer, hopefully. I probably won't buy this lens as I can't justify the cost, but I'd love to have it because it will give a look that I can't currently achieve, and that's always exciting.

Agreed - for hiking landscape photographers the weight and size advantage is definitely not something to be brushed off - I love my 70-200 f/2.8, but I love it less when climbing steep hills - and I've not got a w/a zoom yet, useful as it would be, because the 15-30 is just too big (as well as the problems with filters)

To be honest, I think most (digital) landscape photographers use zooms most of the time - which is what they came out with by launch time - I think they are trying to satisfy as many different types of photographer as they can while they build up their lens armoury, but there are having to be compromises without increased funding - one of which seems to be going for quality over range.

No, I got that, and I agree with the logic- all I was saying is that there's no point in arguing abut how many angels can dance on the head of a pin without first getting hard data about relative sizes of angels and pins, their absolute numbers of angels and, indeed, their terpsichorean tendencies.

I know there is hard data out there (none of it supplied by DPR), just wondering if this data isn't to some extent anecdotal even if reflective of the truth. Not a major issue, and I didn't mean it to seem like I was contesting the point that a higher strike rate is better than a lower strike rate (a) all other things being equal or (b) if that's your highest priority.

since we're happily off topic and talking about AF, I'd just like to say that I was really impressed today not by the K-1's AF-C or even focusing speed, but that in LV it managed to focus perfectly through a 10 stop ND filter PLUS a 3 stop ND grad Plus a polariser. Admittedly it was midday (though midday in late November in the UK with partial sun), but it was diving exposures of, for instance, 8 sec @ f/5.6 and nailing the focus. I also really like the fact that with the firmware update, you can dial in shutter speeds of many minutes and see the properly exposed image on the rear LCD I find that in daylight the fact that you don't have to take the 10-stop off the camera to compose, focus and expose, and don't have to calculate exposures, a really great feature - it's a pity the long exposure timer wasn't available on release so it's not included in reviews.

I do agree with your logic here, but I suspect that the original data might be a little skewed. Nobody here seriously doubts that Nikon AF is better than Pentax AF at the present, and so far always has been - by several years. However, if you change systems it's a big decision and you will be looking for justifications which might slightly subconsciously exaggerate the benefits and play down the disadvantages, maybe rounding the figures a little in the newly adopted system. I don't know who norm is referring to, and I might be doing him an injustice, but this would be the normal thing. Since this is a lens thread, I also think that we must wait to see what the new lenses are capable of - they won't make AF tracking much better as that's largely a function of the camera body, but they could increase flat out AF speed noticeably if they are fully AF oriented - with a shorter focusing throw and more effective motors - There's no doubt that Pentax has handicapped itself by keeping screw drive for too long, and a lot of the backwards compatibility that people treasure is problematic when it comes to forward progress. It seems to me that Ricoh are biting that bullet while trying to produce lenses that are flat out desirable even if a lot of us don't have the cash to afford them or want to carry that weight. Time will tell whether they are right, but the experience of the bigger players shows that you need to have some top class offerings in your armoury to make adopting your brand, even at entry level, a good proposition for aspiring photographers. My feeling is that Ricoh know that, and they're working on it. See - I've digressed back onto topic :D
