Having successfully established (I hope) that I don't know what I'm talking about, I'd be interested to hear thoughts on the following:

If (and I know we don't really know what exactly it does) the accelerator unit just boosts the signal to the processor rather than does any image processing per se, is it possible that the reaction of the PRIME unit to this boosted signal might might produce an output that was visually similar to, but not the same as 'baked-in' noise reduction by the processor? The reason I ask is that otherwise it seems an elaborate work-around to do the same thing, and despite some 'thoughts' in other places, I don't think RI are the sort of people who would do a work-around like that just to pretend they weren't cooking their RAW files.

Speaking from my customary position of profound ignorance, I get that RAW files are meant to contain the maximum information and that any processing of that information reduces the possibilities for future post-processing adjustments, but RAW in itself isn't a perfect representation of reality.Surely what ultimately matters is the finished image, and for the vast majority of photographers, making the process of moving from camera output to finished image simpler, if it doesn't cripple the post processing options too far, is desirable. That's why Lightroom does what it does, as mentioned above, and that's what cameras do what they do. As somebody interested in the finished image who doesn't want to wade through dozens of processes that require skills I don't have, I'm grateful for this - in the same way that I don't want to have to know how to programme to get my PC to do real world useful things. I was slightly disturbed by early shots from the K-1ii in terms of detail smoothing, but I see plenty where that isn't apparent but the better colours are and it looks OK to me - not that I've processed files from one.

This guy isn't just an ordinary troll, he's on a crusading mission - he refuses to let anything positive about Pentax go unchallenged - but Pentaxian refutations haven't descended to his level, and I don't think we do harm to the brand by politely countering his more ridiculous claims.

It would be quite amusing if everybody here went over to DPR posting positive things about Pentax - dpthoughts computer might overheat and go up in flames as he tried to refute every point with his streams of hostile nonsense. :)

On the positive side, a different circuit board is a minor difference - it's not like they had to remodel the whole camera - they could, if they wished, just prolong the life of the K-1 without too much disruption - but I think it's easy to get over-worried - doubt the Japanese buyers are going to take any notice at all.

Maybe banning dpthoughts rather than members here would be an act of good faith in that regard

If you read his comments elsewhere, he says something t the effect of in the real world people care about what works best (I'll find the quote when I have time) - a lack of consistency is a great signaller of arguing from a viewpoint other than objective truth
Edit -

Here we are:

'"Why the insistence on comparing DSLR to mirrorless?"
Because actual photographers don't care about the underlying technology, they care about the results.'

Yes - it's your (correct and varied) use of colloquial english expressions that I found most interesting - that sort of explains that, I think :)

To my eye that doesn't quite explain what I was talking about, but my understanding of the engineering side of digital imagery has never been my speciality

What's weird in the samples leekil posted above is that the two Pentaxes render the scene very similarly but the Sont, and especially the Nikon seem t bring out very different details- not more or less necessarily, just different
