Slighty off topic here (but on topic hue hue hue), I was really hoping (by now) some HD FA 35/2 comparison shots/review vs its predecessor and possibly pitched against the FA31 which I'm sure many of you might agree is a choice contender if looking for a prime around this focal length. Did I miss it, has someone started a HD FA35/2 thread/review?

This is where Pentax can't win.

Make a FF camera everyone loves, the K-1. Everyone loves the ergonomics.

Make an ultra small and compact APS-C camera, everyone hates because of ergonomics.

Make a APS-C camera that takes a size and form factor everyone loves (the K-1) for new APS-C, but now it will be too big.

LOL.

You just can't please everyone. Does no one understand that making something small comes at a price, in the same way making something big does also? Big things often are comfy... but then it's annoying because... well... it's big.
Small things are cool because like... they're small... typically lighter or at least can be stored in smaller containers/bags. But then they're 'fiddler' and perhaps not as comfy.
Medium size things are often criticised for not going enough in one direction or another.

I bought a KP to compliment the K-1. I liked the idea of having a second camera body that was lighter and more compact. I can handle the 'awkward' ergonomics and accept it's a trade off for it's smaller form factor. No big deal.

PS, not having a go at you personally, just making a point.

And I think this is where we should all be behind Pentax. We all know Pentax is the weird kid in the corner, it doesn't have the resources of it's larger siblings. I'd be utterly fine with a APS-C sensor in a K-1 body if it brought more to the party than what the K-1 and KP can do in certain respects, this in-conjunction with keeping consumer costs down so we can all afford it, sounds like a win win to me.

Want a smaller APS-C camera? There is the KP :D

I'm waiting to see what kinda prices the HD FA 35/2 will go for here in Australia. It might not be that cheaper... Well.. I mean it will be cheaper, I don't think us Aussie's can get a FA31 cheaper than $1200AUD new in a DCXpert eBay 20% sale... but is the HD FA 35/2 going to sell for $399AUD or more like $799AUD or something...

I've seen some really mint second hand FA31's go for around $800AUD which is probably to route I'd end up going if the HD FA 35/2 is going to be too pricey.

What I will really want to see further down the line is a FA31 vs HD FA35/2 shoot out, at specifically both at their widest apertures or perhaps a stop down and compare under a variety of conditions (to see how much that HD Coating is helping).

Hehe, sorry Sandy, I was just having fun in my usual naughty way. It did provoke you into submitting a bunch of wonderful images however :p

I'm taking bets for Sandy getting a HD FA35/2, despite him saying he won't I think the odds are still in my favour, whose my first taker.

I feel somewhat similar. I own a KP and K-1 and although I use the K-1 a lot more I have purposely bought lenses that are interchangeable between both systems. IQ wise the KP is up there with the K-1 and it's insane to think a new KP can be had for around $800AUD now...

I do however prefer the button layout and higher customisation of the K-1 over the KP, but really I think I could switch entirely to the KP system and output the same high quality of work I manage with the K-1.

Any chance you will think about getting the HD FA 35/2 as well? I'm keen for comparison and example shots and your page really excels at that ;)

Compare away!
Doesn't look too bad to me, but I do get your point. I think sometimes it's not about the number of points but just how well and healthy the star bursts look and render. If the spikes are getting 'fatter' towards the edges rather than slimer and pointier then that's not as good a look imo, and I find certain light sources do that more than others.

In your shot, the street lights are kinda doing that 'fat towards the outer edges of the spikes' thing, but then so is my shot of the highway above with the SMC-A 24/2.8. But if you look closely at my A24 shot and inspect the other spikey light sources (such as traffic lights or stationary vehicles) you will see they form a bit differently, sharper and pointier.

Maybe it's just aperture related and distance to the light and there's no difference at all, I dunno... The FA43 seems to produce nice star bursts, maybe it's just more blades as you say...

Interesting, I have to say I have never paid too much attention to the blade and number of star points and whether a certain figure is better than another. I too have that 5 bladed SMC-A24/2.8 and love what it can do with star bursts, and then I also have the even number 8 bladed FA43 which too I think produces excellent stars;

I think this was with the A24/2.8;

FA43

Anyone got some 6 bladed star bursts to compare with? Preferably with the FA35/2? :D

Cool! So... this new HD FA 35/2, it doesn't have rounded blades right, so it should give cool star bursts then AND has the benefit of HD coatings for all that daytime work? (in theory...)?

EDIT: I mean... in a way is this a first for Pentax? To put the HD coating on a NON rounded aperture bladed lens?

Amen.

There are quite a few other options in the market that offer silent AF.

Everything comes at a cost, to replace screwdrive with something else may boost the price up as well. I dunno... I just see a noisy 35 as not such a big deal as opposed to wanting a silent FA77 which makes more sense for that kinda ceremony stuff.

I do shoot public speaking events and often throw the FA77 onto the KP, and then using Manual Focus only and ES mode, you can still even shoot through the OVF AND be in continuous burst mode, that combination I tell you is absolutely dead silent. Or if you prefer use the LV screen with focus peaking. As with most things in life we work around limitations, or change to something else. Don't get me wrong I'd love more silent AF lenses too, but on this guys poor budget I think if everything went this way it would get out of my price range :(

lmao, I must be the only Pentaxian that likes the FA Ltd's sound :D

QS would be a nice addition indeed. I miss that more than silent motors.

Every 'green' lens succeeds massively better for star burst than 'red' ones. DA 15, DA 21 DA 35, they all blow the HD versions away for star bursts. As someone who owned all the red ones and did significant tests at various apertures, they pretty much fail at the task. Heck I'd just get my old SMC-A 24/2.8 out and immediately get the star burst effect I'm looking for. And of course the FA43 and 77 does fine star bursts too.
Every review I had seen of the green going against the red, the green wins on star bursts everytime and the official Pentax reviewer would suggest each time it's the HD coatings stopping the effect from really shining.

^

Oh I think you're right about them being a welcome addition in all other respects, it's just the star bursts seem to lacklustre on every red lens. Sounds like you got it good though having both SMC and HD varieties. If I had the funds I'd go that way, simply packing the green one for when going out at night :D

So here's a serious question for any traditional FA35/2 owner. With this new HD version, do we think the coating is actually going to improve the image quality, like somehow bring out the micro contrast which gives perceived increase in sharpness?

I've owned the HD DA 21, 15 and 35 macro and sold them all (that's just how I kinda operate, buy, try sell and move onto something else hehe). It's not that I wasn't impressed by them but if I feel there's something missing from the lens that niggles away at me then I typically sell on. In this case it was actually the HD coatings, they led to very unimpressive star bursts and I decided to get the regular non HD versions of those primes at a later date. (with the 35 it was being limited to f2.8 and non FF compatible, although it was almost just good enough for FF but yeah... I decided FA31 would be it's ultimate replacement (and I have macro lenses elsewhere)...

So with this HD version of the 35/2 I'm interested in it's IQ purely from a F2 standpoint. I know it's going to lack the star burst thing going in, but if it can deliver really nice sharp shots at F2 (that are significantly better than the older FA35/2 f2 shots) then I see value for money here.
