What filter to make greens less blue-green in color film photography.

There IS one post on this forum about Harman Phoenix 200 film. The poster's sample pix include no natural vegetation, so the images do not display the blue-green I dislike. And the outdoor shots were taken in a "soft cloudy light" and don't display the overly washed out whites and highlights.

I have quite a few filters. A greater selection for some sizes, but I can choose to do the film tests with a lens with a filter diameter for which I have the filters I need for the test.

Unless anyone wants to offer more suggestions about using filtration to reduce too-blue greens at the time of film exposure, I consider this thread CLOSED. Many thanks to all who assisted me in beginning to answer these questions.

If any forum member with experience using Harmon Phoenix 200 film wants to begin a discussion about using it and coping with any flaws (or strengths) it has, I would certainly be interested in reading that discussion (and contributing to it once I have shot some of it and have scans to post). Obviously, that discussion should be in a separate discussion thread, not this one.

Ha, ha, ha! Did I ever claim to be rational?

I have a right, as a film photography lover (which may require some level of irrationality to begin with), to be angry that a favorite film of mine is no longer manufactured and distributed. The circumstances for this don't really matter that much to me.

There are photographers still in deep morning for the loss of Kodachrome 25 and Vericolor III. I am kin to them,

And, dear uncle, it you think some beancounter in the company didn't get a bonus for proposing pulling these emulsions from the line, perhaps that is not truly a realistic and rational perspective either.

The loss of great films is a hurtful loss, no matter what the explanation is. The loss of several color films, during a stretch of only a few years, is both hurtful and scary.

I am just honestly professing what I think and how I feel. Call it what you like.

photoptimist, you are on-track with your suspicion that the problem could be in the color dyes in the film.

pentaxus, your mention of cooler colors in some Fuji film is related to my quandary.

The problem is with a film I have not shot yet, but which I will try out soon: the Harmon Phoenix 200 film which was released last December. On a recent day, I found myself reading/watching most of the reviews of this film I could easily find online, especially valuing the ones which showed many shots taken by the reviewers of various kinds of subjects.

There are things I definitely don't like about this film, based on those photographer's results:
--natural greens turning artificially blue green
--too much contrast to the extent that whites have almost no detail
--this film is overpriced!!!!
--I would include the halation factor, except subject selection and shot framing can control this, something like flare can be invited or controlled.

So why would I want to shoot this film? For one thing, I very much like the idea of a company with a lot of experience creating and manufacturing camera film creating a NEW color film, at a time when Kodak and Fuji seem to be losing interest in having the diversity of color film types they used to have.

Harmon calls this film "experimental," but as mostly-closed-lipped responses from their people reveal, they don't mean by that it's merely for experimenters (like those lomography people hungering for a new film that will make all their photos suddenly look like the subjects are cut out of colored marshmallow bits). The Harmon people mean that it is the first stage in their experiment in making a useful color film--they've created a product worth people trying out. They seem to have a lot of ideas for where they want to take it, but, to their credit, they want to see what having photographers around the world trying it out will also tell them about next steps. And why does it it cost so much? They say they intend to plow all the money they get for it, back into developing the next level of their color film...to be released when? Well, that's something else they are closed lipped about, beyond saying they are constantly working on that project.

So, I've decided to order a roll, and will probably shoot at least a couple more rolls, but on these test rolls I'd like to see how to get pictures I will like. But what to do about these irksome greens I see in reviewers' pictures? The responses here, have definitely helped me with things to try to find out whether filtration can provide any help at all with this. Overall, this film seems capable of giving a rather warm depiction, so how to reduce blue in the greens and not heat the images up too much? Perhaps filtration solutions will have to be very carefully managed.

It could be that the best results with this new film will come from careful subject selection:
--if it's too contrasty, using it for very low contrast subject matter might be good. It might even give better results from a lens that isn't as contrasty as one might like!
--if it tends to blowout highlights and lose detail in bright areas, trying to limit those areas in the frame might give better results.
--if the greens tend to be too skewed to blue, limit the greens, or have the main subject matter low in green content to highlight the film's capability in rendering other colors.

I also might send Harmon a summary of my results with some of my photos.

Back to the pentaxus comments about Fuji. When I first shot the newly available (at my camera store) Fujicolor 400 in the 1970s (yes, I'm that old), I thought it presented the most natural rendition of nature subjects I had seen to that point in my new 35mm photographer experience, and, about ten years ago, I still very much liked the colors from their plain old Fujicolor 100 I could get new then. But I definitely like somewhat less the colors in their Fujicolor "Superia Xtra" 400 which I also bought some of around that time, and greens being too bluish was definitely part of the problem. I am angry with Fuji that they discontinued Fujicolor 100, because I would still buy fresh-dated rolls of it if I could order them. I am also angry with Kodak discontinuing color film types.

And I am hoping that experimenting with Harmon Phoenix 200 might teach me something I can do to make my expired Superia Xtra worth using. And I'm very curious about where Harmon will take color film in the future.

Thanks for all of the responses so far.

I have thought about yellow and warming filters, but if the main issue is the greens being too blue, while the rest of an image doesn't seem cool at all, do I want to warm up the entire image? I'm wondering whether experiments should include Skylight 1Bs, slight warmers like 81Bs, but maybe also I should see whether an FL-D would affect the green without adding too much yellow or orange or amber. An FL-D might boost the magenta a bit, but perhaps not to a problematic level. Exactly what it might do to the greens might be more of an issue. Well, it would be easy enough to include some shots "bracketed" one might say with different filters while shooting a roll of film just to see what happens. Also, trying to take some pictures with little green in them to begin with, might be an alternate way of dealing with the problem---ha, ha. Also, I'll try a polarizer, since perhaps with more saturation the greens might appear more natural.

I have an aversion to the natural greens I am familiar with being turned into a bright blue-green, to the extent that it begins to look like the landscape has been turned into injection-molded plastic.

If I just want to dampen down the bluishness of the greens I might get with a particular film or films by a little, and not turn the images overly yellow or orange, what filters should I try.

My eldering brain can't seem to summon up the proper color wheel image that would tell me what colors subtract what other colors.

(I'm not going to mention any films by name, and have this thread slip into a film brand or type discussion; I just want to know about filters.)

As the old saying goes,"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Anybody as old as that camera has a few spots or other blemishes. If they aren't affecting function, I'd leave them alone. Maybe they were tiny, and they are bigger now because the last owner tried to clean them!

A good way to learn about bokeh is to carefully look at this entire thread from the beginning. It of course shows a great variety of kinds and degrees of bokeh.

When I did that, I didn't wish to eliminate or disparage any of those kinds and degrees, but I arrived at the view that the best bokeh significantly contributes to the overall image and that image is better than it could possibly be without its contributing bokeh.

Thin negatives, meaning less than strong evidence of the image there, generally means underexposure. Expired film is less sensitive than when new and generally needs extra exposure, depending on how old it is. But it could have color shifts and fogging even if you have given the extra exposure it needed t to have had.

I started shooting negative film (as opposed to slide film) a third stop slower than box speed when I was first using an interchangeable-lens SLR around 1971, because I was having some underexposure issues in first rolls shot. It might have been because my camera's meter was off, or because I wasn't (but should have been) exposing for the shadows better.
