New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

If the sensor is the same as the one Fujifilm are using in the X-T3 then it is reasonable to expect Ricoh to bring forth a camera with similar capabilities? The X-T3 is an incredible camera and I think we should be excited to be able to purchase an ASP-C DSLR with similar performance capabilities. I don't see any reason for Ricoh to cripple the sensor to produce some kind of mere K-3 upgrade. I would think the camera would rival the X-T3, Canon D7 mk II and potentially Nikon D500.

A Pentax D500 with 26 Mp would work well with the D FA 150-450 and DA 560 lens combination for wildlife shooters. You could argue that the high pixel density of a 26 Mp v 20 Mp would make the Pentax flagship a superior setup?

Also I noticed some popularity of Birding on my recent trip to Japan. Maybe there is a a marketing opportunity here that we can't see?

So far- from what I can glean from this thread- is the new ASP-C flagship will have a 26 Mp Sony sensor which is capable of 10 fps, 60 + focus points, designed to compete with the Nikon D500, Canon D7 mkII and priced around the 1700USD.(This would require a significant upgrade in processing capabilities I guess) Possibly 4K video.

That is my take on things. :)

The main reason for the K-1 being slow to clear the buffer is that it is a field / landscape camera. The strengths of a FF camera is in photographing big things. Big things don't usually move quickly. Therefore a fast clearing buffer is not necessary. This thread is for an ASP-C sensor? ASP-C sensors are useful for photographing relatively small things. Small things sometimes move fast. (like birds in flight or motorcycles at a distance) Maybe the Ricoh engineers will understand this and design the camera accordingly?

Is it possible the new ASP-C camera will be to the 100 anniversary what the LX was to the 60th anniversary?
i.e. a technological tour de force showcasing the engineering capabilities of Ricoh? Reminding the photographic community that Pentax is still relevant.

I wouldn't be surprised if the K-3 replacement grew a bit in size and was similar to the K-1 in style.

I was told the K70 will become the new entry level DSLR camera. I don't think it needs replacing.
I would think the KP will be around for some time to come too (maybe another 5 years) and may never be replaced directly.
There is room to take the replacement K-3 II up market (sports and birding) to encourage the sales of Telephoto Zooms such as D FA 150-450 etc.

Seems like a sensible strategy to me.

I think where we fundamentally disagree is on the cost to bring high end specs to the new camera.
I mentioned earlier product differentiation. KP and the new ASP-C flagship. The KP gives room for Ricoh to take their flagship up market. I think we agree that is where Ricoh want to go? I am sure some K3 owners have already happily purchased a KP.

I believe that given the D500 is three years old and currently selling for 1496USD then a product from Pentax approaching the D500 in performance could sell for 1350USD You obviously think it would cost 2000USD. Fujifilm currently sell the X-T30 for 899USD. It has the 26 Mp sensor being speculated.
Anyhow time will tell.

Oh if you want to talk economics. We have a much slower product cycle these days. Comparing launch price from the past is less relevant. I think the manufacturers philosophy is to charge more for a camera that has high specs because the customer can afford to depreciate the investment over a longer period of time. You should be comparing the annual cost. In other words Pentaxians have longer to save for this one!

My comment about compactness was in context of being a K-1 owner.
Also the Ricoh execs described the attributes of the ASP-C format as compactness and quickness. The inference being that the KP has been designed for those who enjoy compactness and to use the Limited lenses. This comment also made me think that they may be planning to produce another line that specializes in speed.
But who knows I could be wrong.
Maybe it will just be a K-3 with a 26 Mp sensor. WOW

There you go Clackers. All I said was Pentax could make a Nikon D500 style of camera. They already have the telephoto lenses . An upgrade of the older ASP-C lenses could follow. 26Mp, 10 frames per second improved buffering and AF. plus maybe 4K video. I really don't think it is too much to expect?

Most of the lenses owned by ASP-C shooters?
The 55-300 is the perfect example of the point being made. An upgrade to the lens results in more sales in the ASP-C segment.

Do you have a favorite body/lens combination? I know we are getting a bit off track and I get your point.

Pentax have a bit of a dilemma. They have dated AF that needs to be upgraded. Their lenses are slow to focus too. It is hard for them to upgrade one or the other. They basically need to upgrade both. That is why I suggested the improved SDM lenses as has been speculated. A new body with improved AF goes hand in hand with new SDM lenses. A gotcha priced body but new lenses for tight Pentaxians to splurge on?

Nobody's job is on the line here....It's just an internet forum. I would be really disappointed if the flagship ASP-C camera was just a K-3 with a spit and polish and costing 1250 USD....Very disappointed.

In fact, I would probably look to other brands for sports and birding if I was serious about expanding my portfolio and exploring other photographic genre.

Lots of avoidance here.

What therefore is the likely price point of the future ASP-C flagship camera?

I guess from my perspective as a K-1 user I am asking myself what features would tempt me to purchase an ASP-C camera. The KP certainly has compactness. An ASP-C flagship would need to have strong sports and birding capabilities. These are K-1 weaknesses IMO. I would be tempted by a Pentax camera that had D500 X-T3 type specs. I am sure the D FA150-450 lens would perform well on such a camera?

Personally I don't care how expensive the camera is. I just don't want it to be prohibitive for K-3 users to upgrade. A strong feature set to rival the D500 or X-T3 would be fine with me. Even at 1700USD.

I'm just wondering if anyone on this forum has any input as to the likely specifications and price of the new flagship ASP-C camera?
It seems like no one is willing to speculate out of fear of criticism....

I can see an opportunity here for Ricoh to make a splash and produce a Nikon D500 style of camera. Pentax already have the KP so the flagship ASP-C needs to differentiate sufficiently from this. I believe going all out to produce a camera that takes advantage of the ASP-C format in "Quickness" is the best marketing strategy. Ricoh can make a statement that the DSLR ASP-C format is still relevant by bringing out such a camera.
I'm going to make a guess.

26 Mp,10 fps, 4K video, significantly improved AF (possibly including updated ring motor SDM lenses) significantly increased buffering capabilities and a price tag of 1350USD.

Happy 100 anniversary Pentax...

There is a possibility it is basically the same sensor as the Fijifilm X-T3 sensor. One would think that the new Pentax ASP-C flagship would have significantly improved specs in line with the Fiji camera?

or design an OVF camera with a sliding eyepiece that when moved to the right locks the mirror up and exposes a EVF?
