Nice!
That describes most nights I go out. :P move the mount, move the scope, plug everything in, go back in and start the software...go back out and hookup the network, go back in take a test shot, go back out and unlock the focuser(gah!) It's not so bad in the months I put things together out front 20ft away for northern targets, but in the winter it means 14 stairs and changing from slippers to boots each go.
Great job getting the ring to show up!

@UncleVanya: Howdy! I think he's using telescope numbers. 66mm aperture at 400mm focal length (f6) and the ED coating handles color better than standard achromat refractors. I'd like more info too as I'm possibly shopping for an ed or apo in the next year.

That's a lovely eclipse shot. Mine were in high winds and a bit of a mess. I'm still playing with them though. Because of the high winds I used a short and light(and old) 100mm f6 (600mm) Orion scope and my k5. On the big ole EQ6-R mount to anchor things.

Here's my timelapse of the event. The shadows are mostly smoke from the fire that was required due to the negative wind chill that night. It was a great show though! After replacing my beleaguered k-50 for xmas, I'm still learning the k5's quirks as an astrophotography camera so there are obvious errors here. I lost much of the the second half after the camera refused to respond to the remote(indoors) system upon return to internal exposure timing.
Maybe I'll find a good one to put in this lunatic thread. :D

Lunar eclipse fun

cheers!

K-5 For Astrophotography

Hi everybody!
I just set aside my infamous k-50(pentax the red) for a K5 I won at auction and I'm currently working on getting things ready to try it out in the coming weeks.
I felt pretty good reading the last few pages of this thread after that initial effort to get tethering working better, despite being left hanging by Ricoh and the k-50's flaky firmware. The credit for getting it working goes to András Salamon of
Pktriggercord and especially the very busy Marcus Meissner of LibGphoto2. After hacking on source from both projects on my own, I had the idea that maybe Marcus could look over András' work and update the pentax section of Gphoto2. Marcus took interest in the project and made a wrapper to combine PKtriggercord with Gphoto, without having a Pentax camera on hand, by having me recompile and test each iteration until we got it going*. He did eventually get a k10d to work out the bulb command since mine was broken and no other testers had stepped forward.
I'm also glad to see discussions of Indilib/Kstars as well because it was that full on AP suite that made me want to tether the K-50 in the first place and Jasem Mutlaq has built a great group of guys supporting the project. The key point I'd like to make while I'm blowing the horns is that these guys are all Opensource developers motivated by a need and sense of community. They might not say they all run on hugs but they do...and a tip in the beer jar here and there helps too. :)

Support your opensource heroes!

P.s. some great looking photos here too :)

You bet!...In mine at least, (the much maligned d17a2) it's actually an sohc with a reasonably mild cam that runs below 3200rpm and at lower power at higher rpm, but if demand goes above a certain point it will open an oil port and engage pins on a second set of lobes that will supercede the milder ones actually picking the whole valve train up to the high and longer timing in the process turning it into a snarling little beast that wouldn't even idle if the lock didn't let go(which has happened to a few of them when not maintained.)

I put a clamp on my weight bar and a nice little ball mount so I can put a camera there and do wide field shots while the big one is tracking. I like the little planetary cam for remote piloting and autoguiding, and made an adapter that lets me use the unused 9x50 inline finder that came with my scope by whittling down a 2inch to m42 ring adapter with 2inch thread issues. Really happy with that one :)

The k1ii I'm hoping to win would work well for wider fov shots as the main camera as well as close the door on years of K-50 strife and yoga at the mount.

I did a bunch of that early on in my efforts. I started getting worried about commenting on 8 year old posts and started limiting to newer ones when they showed up, but now that I know it's okay I'll probably spend more time checking it out. So many great things to see. Sometimes I don't give the obligatory great shot, as it seems so redundant, and I'd sometimes like to chat about content anyway, so I do. Way I figure it, if they thought it was crap they wouldn't have posted it anyway. :P

But if something really makes me say WOW...I say that too. I think it has more meaning that way.
