Thanks, not really

I`m considering the Sigma 300mm F2.8, not the DA*300. I already have the excellent Sigma 100-300 F4 EX DG so there is no need for the DA* 300.

You guys shot any BIF`s with the DFA150-450? How does it perform in that area?

PS: Do you use the programmable AFbuttons?

Question...do you also have the sigma 1.4 EX TC? And if yes, how would you compare the 300mm with TC to the DFA in the long end?
I`m trying to decide between the DFA and the 300mm, I already have the sigma 1.4x TC for my 100-300 F4 :)

Lol, it was allready 10,- cheaper then the other one I found :)

Small question:
Which spacers are in the package? Cause first you mention 10mm and later on Larry mentions 4 and 8mm?

Adrian and Larry, many thanks for this all. :)
Found one in a local webshop for €30, I`ll think I order one and see what results it produces (after modifying). 2b continued.

I`m about to pull the trigger on a new tele...the sigma 500mm F4.5 is probably out of reach so now I`m having a hard time to decide between the new DFA 150-450 and the Sigma 300mm F2.8. I really was exited about the WR and wide-open capabilities of the DFA but I just found a extensive thread on the net about the 300mm F2.8 including shots with the 1.4 and 2x TC`s from Sigma (allready owning the first). 420mm F4 and 600mm F5.6 sound (and look, judging by the images in that thread) awefully good

FWIW: This was my theory for the K5 as that body doesn`t support TC`s but last weekend I forgot to turn SR off on my K-3 and again most shots were blurred. Exif says 300mm instead of 420 so again the SR is working to compensate for a faulty focal length.

First of all, the bare lens has allways better IQ 1 on 1 but 420mm vs 300mm is a significant gain in reach and has often been the difference between the front and the back of the animal or bird :)
The thing is, when 420mm is too long, you still can zoom out with this combo. Putting on the TC when you`re suddenly in need of extra reach mostly leaves you with nothing.
One thing though, AF lockingspeed is slower and the combo will hunt more with the TC on. I guess working with a TC is allways a compromise.

And for that reason I`m still debating whether to get the new DFA150-450 or the sigma 300 F2.8

I bought the the 100-300F4 together with the sigma 1.4 TC. The minute I got home I did a complete test (on tripod, 2sec delay) with and without TC: https://www.flickr.com/photos/tenznl/sets/72157626200136484

No problem at first, IQ with the TC was very good imho but when I started using the combo in the field (handheld) I was really disappointed...most of the time. Mostly the images were somewhat blurry but from time time it did produce very clean and sharp IQ.
So I tried over and over and really started to hate this TC but I wasn`t able to pinpoint the culprit. Finally, and this took me 2 years, it hit me...SR was messing things up. The body doesn`t recognise the TC so it`s compensating for 300mm instead of 420mm. Tested the combo with SR off et voila...a tad softer due too the TC but no more blur.

To make a long story short, the sigma 1.4x TC is a good match but beware of the SR. Don`t know if the Pentax TC is better but it does have the benefit of being recognized by the body. From what I`ve seen it quite good with the DA* 300mm F4 and the sigma is imho in the same league. Just checked the prices and the sigma doubled since I`ve purchased it and the Pentax is even more expensive here in Europe. Not an easy choice if I had to make it now. Best way to go would be testing them both before buying.

Merci, Zygonyx. Great shots!
That`s a bit dissapointing, however I do like the typical Pentax colors and contrast. Also the WR and the allmost silent AF are big plusses.

Thnx! Never been there but I`ve heared good stories about him.
However, still debating with myself whether to get the DFA 150-450mm or the Sigma 300mm F2.8... 420mm F4 sounds very good and I allready have the sigma 1.4 APO TC.

As for the DFA 150-450: Does anyone know at which focal lenghts the aperture changes? At how much mm`s does it become F5.6?

It`s in good hands by the look of your sample :)

Nice one.
Same in Holland, yesterdaymorning the world was suddenly white. Got 15cm of snow in my garden during the day.
This morning was good, forced myself out of bed early and went out with the smc DA15. Wasted lots of precious time clearing the car (the melted snow frooze again during the night) but I managed to get this one:

Haven`t shot too many birds or BIF`s lately but last month I had a go at the annual murmuration of European Starlings. These shots were captured in 2 different locations over a period of 2-3 weeks because the birds weren`t really cooperative (short and low flying).

Thank you too :)
2 and 4 were shot with an ND110, 1 and 3 were without filters. Nr 3 is a 0.6s exposure and did require some additional and local PP to reveal the colors and lightfall but the NDshots had only a tweak in whitebalance and a small vibrance boost.

New lens for wildlife/sport?

Hi Wikstrom, welcome to the forums :)
Not sure what sports and wildlife you have in mind but IMHO 200mm is a bit on the short side for wildlife.
But If you are considering a 300mm F4 but prefer a zoom, you could also look at the DA* 60-250 F4 or have some patience and keep a close eye on the 2nd hand market.

Edit:
Larry beat me to it :)

sigma 150-500 OS - really?

No switch, no OS I guess? Hmm, I didn`t even know a non-OS version exsisted :o
Then the importance of the part about learning curve and good support just tripled. May I suggest this article(click) written by Heie? Most if not all also applies to shooting long glass.

sigma 150-500 OS - really?

It defenately has OS and I consider Sigma`s OS better than Pentax` SR with focal lengths over 300mm. I have shot as low as 1/80s handheld and got sharp images. Be sure to turn SR off if you want to use the full potential of the OS.
When you activate AF, you`ll hear the OS engage and your image in the VF will stabilize. And as with all long lenses there is a learning curve. Don`t give up yet, if you get to know the weaknesses of the lens, your IQ will improve.
As for that matter, I consider this a "nice weather lens" as it needs tons of light and it must at least be stopped down to F8 for decent sharpness. Even in bright sunlight ISO500 is the minimum to get decent shuttertimes (e.g. 1/500 or more) It is a little soft on the long side (like all megazooms of this level) so leaving the filter at home is probably a good idea.

Hi guys, how are you all doing? Lots of great images and news (only went back 10 pages but Travis` departure is quite a shock)

It has been a while since I`ve last posted here due to moving to a new house. Also my K5 died after my wife dropped it from the couch.
A few weeks ago I allready picked up a K-3 but somehow it took me until last week to go out and shoot some birds.

The tracking and focussing have indeed great improvements over the K-5 and the 24Mp AA-filterless images are a pleasure to work with (allthough quite large).
Most of the work is done and the smoke is finally settling down so I expect some more spare time for shooting from now on.

Great shots, that for sure but bearshots with 200mm...you must have been in a hide or something? I mean, a motherbear (or any large preadator for that matter) with 2 cubs is a good recepy to get mutilated or eaten?

For the last 2 months I`ve been busy (new house) and had little time for photography. Also busted my K5 so I got a K3 instead. Last weekend there was finally an opportunity for a decent shoot and guess which lense I grabbed first and made me forget the other 3 in the bag?
