K-3 - K-5 accessories compatibility

If I really needed/wanted a new body, yes, I would go with the K3. However, having 2 K5IIs bodies plus 2 BG-4 grips, I just cannot justify the expense of a K3 AND a BG-5 (199.00) grip . . . total around $ 1,450.
In searching for a new K5 body, I found prices around $ 850 . . . a new K3 body priced out around $ 1, 250. To me, that is about a difference of $ 450 . . . how did you find a K3 that "was only about $ 150" more? That would set it at about $ 1, 000 . . . at that price I might consider acquiring a K3. Please let me know.
Thanks, Paul

K-3 - K-5 accessories compatibility

I was also "totally psyched" about the K3 . . . even noticed that the accessories seemed to be compatible with the K5IIs (of which I have 2) . . . until I noticed that the grip indicated model number BG-5. Funny, everything is backward compatible except for the most expensive accessory. The difference in the physical specs of the K3 vs the K5 are so small that I cannot believe that Pentax (Ricoh) would have found it difficult to make them identical. But, this minor difference does allow them to, potentially, add an extra $200 to every sale.
This "small difference" is enough to make me wait until they work out any bugs in the software and, perhaps, come out with the K3s. I have been looking at most of the samples on this site (and others) and, quite frankly, do not see enough difference to justify the investment.

I have been a loyal Pentaxian since my first Spotmatic. For those of you that have never heard of a "Spotmatic", it was a 35mm film SLR. At the time, it was, arguably, one of the most advanced cameras in the world.

As Pentax has moved into the digital age, I went right along with them. MY setup includes: two K-5IIs bodies with D-BG4 grips, DA* 16-50, DA* 60-250, FA 18-270, DA 55-300 and several good old "F" series lenses which I have just never been able to give up, I admit that I also have strayed a bit and have the SigmBigma, a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and my flash is a Metz setup.
But, I think you can see that I am, in fact, a true "Pentaxian". I even have an Optio for scuba.

So, while this post is "off topic" as far as Pentax goes, I truly wish I could be writing about my "new Pentax". I wonder if my adding a Samsung to my setup made them so mad that they are changing the name to "Ricoh".

When I first heard about the Samsung NX20, I thought it might be a convenient, light, carry around and I decided to check it out. I had never heard of the NX line and had hoped that, as many previous Samsung bodies have, it was compatible with the Pentax mount. I discovered, unfortunately, that it did not use a Pentax mount and meant a new set of lenses. So, I opted not to purchase.

However, after reading some of the reviews and finding an incredible buy on the NX20, I could no longer resist. So, I now have an NX20, 50-200 OIS, and 18-55 OIS which will become my "walk around" setup. Even with the 50-200 it is very light and easy to carry. Yes, it is light because the body is primarily plastic. However, the build seems excellent. As indicated previously, when it comes to photographic equipment, I have always been a Pentaxian. However, quite frankly, when it comes to about anything else that is electronic, I guess I would have to call myself a "Samsungian". Just about everything in my home from my TV to stove to the monitor I am viewing is made by Samsung. I have always found their products to be well-built, reliable and, if you do some searching, reasonably priced. And, the very few times I have been in need of support, they have been right on spot. I would have to rate their support as five star.

I have fairly large hands yet the camera feels very comfortable. The controls are well placed and easy to use. The viewfinder and display is excellent. While I have never been completely satisfied with the rear screen on my K5s, I find the articulated AMOLED screen on the DX20 to be very easy to view and, since you can move it to just about any viewing position, it is great for those hard to get shots.

I shoot a lot of moving objects . . . birds, animals and people (and, yes, we are sometimes like animals). So, I am really looking forward to using the 8.6 fps continuous burst. And when shooting a live concert, continuous mode allows one to catch some really great shots. And, for those you that shoot RAW, a I usually do, it shoots in both RAW (SRW extension)and JPEG. Also, both Photoshop and LightRoom recognize the NX RAW extension.

I have only had the Samsung for a couple of days and am just getting used to it and shooting test shots to learn how to use the camera, When I have some good shots, I will post them.

One last point. One area where Pentax, and just about every other manufacturer, could really learn a lot is in the way that Samsung has written the user manual. It is so easy to read and understand that I believe a person who has never before handled a DSLR would have no difficulty in using this camera. It is probably one of the best user manuals, for any product, I have ever seen.

"Yep. 100% It is sublime to have two identical cameras when out shooting." and "Why skimp at the finish line?"

Those statements are right-on and you made the correct decisions. If you are going to do something, do it right (the first time). You do not want to look back in regret.

I just sold my two K-5's and got two K5IIs bodies. Also have two Pentax grips. I would not put anything else on a Pentax body.

My first Pentax was a "Spotmatic". Have not used anything but Pentax.

Stick with Pentax, you will never be sorry.

I placed my pre-order on June 6th . . . spoke with Leah R at Adorama this morning and she sent me a copy of the final order and advised I should receive my K7 by the 9th.

I have never had a problem with Adorama on purchases or returns . . . they are my first source of supply.

Considering the volume of preorders for the K7, I would find it doubtful that you could order this past weekend and expect to receive this week . . . but, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I was always an Epson guy until I bought a Canon PIXMA MP500 (All in One) a couple of years ago . . . it has served me well . . . :)

I have been looking for a higher quality, wide format printer and, after reading many reviews and seeing actual samples at the Adobe PhotoShop show in Vegas, I have settled on the Canon Pixma Pro9000 . . . should arrive on Monday . . . Adorama has it on eBay for $408, free shipping and qualifies for the Canon $100 rebate . . . net cost $308 to your door . . . :D

Hope this helps,

The "issue" is not with the K10D, it is with the Sigma 70mm lens.

There is no aperture ring on this type of lens. Therefore, the lens is, in effect, always in "A" mode . . . the aperture can only be set, electronically, by the body.

You can, however, still control the aperture. For example, if your K10D is in "M" (manual) mode, you can set the aperture by pressing the Green button or using the dial on your K10D.
