The gelatin filter slot is useful for ND filters, I have a set for my Irix 15mm. Who knows they might fit the Sigma. I'll try when I get it.

It will take some time to get here, I'll forward it from my US postal address to my place. No big deal, I just hope I'll get a good copy as returning it would be a hassle.

I just bought an Irix 15mm. How would this compare? The short focusing distance, zoom range and AF are a plus.

Great how-to. I had this in mind when I wrote about this, but never got around to doing it all again and making all the pictures. I have a picture here somewhere of the position of the lens release mechanism, I'll add it here.

The cone is for the weather sealing of the shaft, so that is necessary to make it like it's designed to work. You won't need any glue. Everything comes apart with screws. The only part that might need re-attaching afterwards is the rubber grip on the left side. You can reuse the double-sided tape, or use a new piece.

I am not sure if the original c-clip is plastic, or if it has been superseded by a metal one if you order one now. Since you're in Germany, Foto Maerz can and will sell you the separate parts, no problem. You could ask them.

Yes I did, I made a C-ring myself out of a normal ring which I cut with a Dremel. Here's my written guide to replace the button and retainer. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/285879-lens-release-button-2.html#post3191939

You do have to open up the camera and take of the front to replace it correctly. You do need a metal c-clip. So the three parts are the button, the rubber gasket and the c-clip. Please don't use glue as this is not a good long-term solution.

By the way, Foto Maerz will sell you the parts if you need them.

Choice of materials is an interesting topic. Most people think that a more weighty object has a higher quality feel -I guess that's why my Audio Research linestage remote has a piece of lead inside it's plastic interior. Resistance to scratches and the tactile feel of a material is also of importance.
Plastic is often derided as a cheaper and lower quality material choice as opposed to an all-metal construction. The problem is, there are so many kinds of plastic that such generalizations are meaningless. I would say a material should be chosen for it's suitability in engineering the product. Clearly this is quite often the case. We musn't forget the price point either.

The point is that optics is quite a well known field of physics, certainly where photographic lenses are concerned. The current focus on edge-to-edge sharpness some reviewers have is not the whole story. The problem lens designers/engineers face is to create a desirable combination of optical traits and handling within the limits of cost, dimensions, etc. This is where plastic can help engineer a cheaper lens which still has desirable optical traits.

I think most of the FA series lenses have quite a solid and durable construction, especially for the price. FA* series builds are excellent, as they should be. I don't really like the DA* series plastic material, as the place where the hood attaches can break of, which it did on my 50-135.
Then again, I don't like the FA31 Limited design choices that much either, with it's integrated metal hood. I just bent one when the camera tumbled of the couch. A removable hood would have been better, and plastic would have absorbed the impact in a less costly way.

I think that the FA35 will stay in the lineup for a while longer. The new prime could very well be a new 24 or 28.

Item for Sale
Pentax FA* 80-200mm F2.8

Asking Price
1,050.00 EUR

Item Location
Utrecht (Netherlands)

Item Description
Not an easy decision, but I need to make some room and generate some cash for other stuff. The venerable 80-200 in very good condition with very few marks to the silver finish. Including original front and rear cap, tripod mount, and hood. Everything works, including the power zoom. The only minor point is one very small spot on the inside of the front element which seems to me like it would clean off, no fungus. Please look at the pictures. This doesn't have any effect on images. I would consider sending it to a Pentax specialist like Eric for a CLA if I were to keep it.

Including front and rear cap, hood, and tripod mount. Will package extremely well and with care.

Great on K-1 and also on aps-c bodies. I haven't seen these come up for sale in a while.

I'll add pictures later today.

I'm keeping it for sure. It does wonders on my K-3 II. I'll have to experiment on the K-1 some more, see what I can do in post-processing.

I thought so too, untill I focused to infinity which gave me quite pronounced vignetting.

Update: I talked to one of the staff. It's a known problem that their IT people have not been able to fix. The advice was to order the items seperately. They will combine the orders and only charge shipping once. Oh well.

Trying to buy multiple items I can't get the discounts to work. I can fill in one or the other and it deducts the amount, but when I try to fill in the next discount code it uses that one and forgets the previous one.

I've emailed them to ask for help. Hope they'll also do something about their shipping policy, which is free from GBP100 within the UK. I'd like shipping outside the UK to be free when ordering from a certain amount and upwards. I've bought a camera body from them before. Now looking to spend close to GBP1000 on two lenses.

Picked up my Sigma 70-200 HSM-II today. New firmware and new mount flange. All free of charge. This on a lens I bought second-hand myself, wonderful service by Sigma.

Tried it out on my K-1 today, working great!

I believe the K-1 has the contacts to make AF work if you look closely at the mount. Almost no one talks about this but I do expect a new adapter ring with AF functionality. Maybe someone in the know could chime in, Adam?

K1 Crop Mode...Why You Should Love It!

I have the K-1 and the K-3 II now, but thinking of maybe going back to having just the one camera. Haven't used the crop mode as yet, but I would be very interested to compare the same lenses on the two camera's. Has anybody already made such a comparison perhaps?
I do find I still tend to pick up the K-3 II more often as it is a bit smaller and I'm still more used to the K-3 series feel and operation.

Good to hear. I don't mind the screwdrive at all on the newer bodies. Can't afford the new DFA* right now. I've got an FA* 80-200 and bought a Sigma 70-200 HSM II for little money to compare. The Sigma is currently having it's firmware updated, and the modification for the K-1 done. I feel like I'm still getting used to the totally different field of view on all my lenses on the K-1, although it's a definite plus for some to get the full view (FA* 24).

Is the vignetting we see on the pictures out-of-camera, i.e. without lens-adjustments in-camera or in postprocessing? Especially the one with the dog.

I just got my K-1 in today. I'll need to get to know it before I could say some more on the iq of the FA*. I will say that having the K-1 changes all your lenses as to reach and fov from the aps-c we were used to. Having that extra reach has come in handy, although I do also own the FA* 300mm F4.5 to get to 300mm on ff. Otherwise on the shorter end it's a blessing. My FA* 24mm is so much better on ff than on crop bodies. I will really need to see where I'm headed and how my lenses will fit in this new ecosystem.
The DFA* would be an option for me, but is also heavier still and much more expensive. I also have an 70-200 Sigma HSM II which I will be comparing the FA* too in some weeks as it still needs to get a firmware update and hardware modification before I can mount it to the K-1.

Thanks guys, already sold off my K-S2, K-S1, and K-3 in the time this was shipping. This already got me most of the way there. Got a K-3 II just before I pulled the trigger on this K-1. I'll probably keep both for the coming time. Now I need to get to know the K-1 a little better first.

Which reminds me I really need to update my signature.
