ZX-10 shutter problem (probably a motor or somthing but i need insight)

Here's what I think could be going on.

There's a plastic gear inside the body that turns to cycle the shutter and mirror. Often times that plastic gear breaks and is unable to spin properly. Replacing that gear is possible. I think someone here found a suitable gear made of brass metal. However, the gear is worth more than the camera is many cases. It may be better to simply find a working ZX-10 on eBay or something instead.

I've had a few busted ZX-30 bodies that suffered from this.

Pentax APS-C Dead-End?

First, I said "most, if not all". That does leave room for "some". :p ;)

Second, I think the D-FA* 50mm and the DA* 11-18mm were announced at the same time but the D-FA* 50mm seems to be much further ahead. We're seeing advance sample images online and blog reports on it. Has anything like that appeared for the DA* 11-18mm?

I hope for APS user's sake that the lens will come out soon but I have a feeling that Ricoh took what limited resources they have and threw it all on the D-FA* 50mm.

Pentax APS-C Dead-End?

APS is not so much dead as it may be stagnant. Most, if not all major lens development is happening in the FF (especially FE mount) and u4/3 ecosystems. The reason is because APS is complete. The focal lengths and apertures are mostly covered. I don’t think APS lenses are flying off the shelves to justify major updates like a Rev 2. I think all ecosystems will face this situation when their line up is considered complete. u4/3 May have their Rev 2 in order to get faster versions of already existing focal lengths. Olympus has started releasing faster Pro lenses, like their recent 17mm f/1.2. That’s not a new focal length for them. They already have f/2.8 and f/1.8.

Sony has slowed down their APS lens development. I think Fuji is still trickling something out but it still pales in comparison.

I think the best you can do is upgrade your camera body for better AF performance and correct optical defects with some gentle post processing.

I wanted the toy lenses at one point but got turned off from it. It's always possible to take a razor sharp image from the 01 and make it "creative". However, you can't start with a "creative" image and make it razor sharp. There's enough software out there to give you that "creative" look.

If Pentax made a HD DA 28mm f/2.8 Limited......

The 67% reflects today. I'm willing to wager a scoop of ice cream and a soda that number will be changing significantly in the next 2 - 3 years. That's where Ricoh is looking. Sony saw the same thing with their E mount. When the A7 came out and took off like a rocket almost all the E mount lens development shifted to full frame. APS nearly stopped. A mount completely stopped. Their recent APS E mount 18-135mm zoom is drop of water compared to the flood of FE lenses they've been cranking out to build up their system. If the K-1 becomes as affordable as the basic A7, spreads even half as quickly, and more people, especially price sensitive enthusiasts, grab it then you can start serving me my scoop of ice cream and soda. :p

The 06 and the 08 lenses are the two lenses that make the Q system worth its weight in gold. Where else can you get a constant aperture 70-200mm equivalent lens that fits in the palm of your hand? The 08 wide angle lens is also super sharp too. Shoot wide open or at f/3.2 for optimal performance. Be sure to use the ND filter if you have it in your original Q.

I agree the 01 is nice but nothing special. The 02 is just a barrel of optics. Whatever.

Congrats on the 06! Enjoy it! :)

I think the upcoming D-FA 50mm and the DA 11-18mm were announced at the same time but we've only seen official sample images from the 50mm. That would tell me the 50mm is much further along. Depending on how these past holiday season sales went Ricoh could be redirecting whatever limited resources they have at the upcoming 50mm and put the 11-18mm on the back burner. Once all the higher margin FF work is done and if they don't have anything else going on then Ricoh will focus on APS again.

We saw something similar happen to the Q. Lots of bluster about an upcoming macro lens was made. Sample images were posted online. Even working protos of the lens were made and given to photographers. Then silence. Q development died a silent death. That ecosystem is frozen. How did development die? All development resources were put on the K-1 and the FF ecosystem.

The next many, many lenses will be some sort of FA lens since that lens will provide coverage for both FF and APS. Having such a lens that works on APS and FF would give APS shooters an "upgrade path" to FF and FF would have something to use at it's fullest potential. I think an APS-only lens would have limited impact.

D-FA 28-105mm lens vs. older FA 28-105mm lenses. Anyone?

I haven't forgotten about my thread here! :)

I photographed a third scene after my sand shot and my backyard shot. This third scene is now a view from my front yard. It shows an empty lot with heavy equipment on it and two built houses, one on each side of the house. The scene was shot at 28mm, 50mm, and 105mm and my aperture was f/5, f/8, and f/11. Quick conclusion is that the D-FA is noticeably sharper, especially in the center, than the FA when pixel peeping but not so when viewing the image to fit on my 21" iMac monitor. I also noticed that the FA renders high contrast details in the edges and corners of the frame better than the D-FA but the D-FA renders lower contrast in the edges and corners than the FA. So, depending on what is in those areas could change your perception of sharpness.

The color "pop" is about the same. Maybe the FA has a bit of an edge because it likes higher contrast than the D-FA. I still think the FA 28-105mm f/3.2 is very good lens and is a great alternative to the D-FA 28-105mm.

Pixel peeping crops coming soon! :)

D-FA 28-105mm lens vs. older FA 28-105mm lenses. Anyone?

I started photographing test shots to get an idea how the older FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 lens will compare against the newer D-FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Here are my initial impressions.

Both lenses are sharp in the center. The D-FA gets a little sharper a little faster when stopping down from wide open to f/8 and the D-FA is a little sharper at its sharpest than the FA. Comparing the circular areas of sharpness I would say the D-FA definitely has a larger circle of sharpness compared to the FA.

The D-FA is much sharper in the edges and corners than the FA. Thankfully, the FA sharpens up a bit when stopping down but it won't reach the same level of sharpness as the D-FA in the same area at the same f-stop.

The FA is slightly faster than the D-FA but the FA is too soft at wide open for my pixel peeping pleasure. For something small like a 4"x6" print or maybe something for the web then wide open is probably plenty good.

The FA lens vignettes more than the D-FA.

Colors are outstanding on both!

I photographed sand to get an idea of how the lenses resolve detail. The distance was about 3 feet, or 1 meter. This was my "up close" scene. I also photographed the view from my backyard which includes some hills, the neighbor's roof, and some trees. This was my "infinity" scene. Now that I am beginning to understand how the lenses behave I think I can come up with some better test shot scenes to photograph. Then I will try posting some samples.

The FA is not disappointing lens at all, especially when you consider it's age, where it came from, and today's going price for it. eBay seems to have them priced anywhere from $90 to $130 and hoods seem to be selling separately nowadays. I used the lens on my K-30 for a good long while and I was very happy with the images it produced. It is certainly a viable alternative for those looking to buy a lower cost lens that covers the 28mm to 105mm focal lengths. The D-FA is much more stout and may be more future-proof with its DC motor. Lets not forget the updated coating and optics too. You definitely get more when you pay more. Do you get 4x more when you pay 4x more? That's an individual decision.

More later!

D-FA 28-105mm lens vs. older FA 28-105mm lenses. Anyone?

Has anyone compared the recently released D-FA 28-105mm lens with some of the older film era FA 28-105mm lenses?

I purchased a D-FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 during the Christmas sales and I have a FA 28-105mm f/3.2-4.5 from before. I was thinking of taking some comparison shots tomorrow but I wanted to hear if anyone has done something like this already so I don't go about reinventing the wheel so to speak.

Thanks!

An alternative to the 2 and 12 second timers would be to use a wireless or wired remote to trigger the shutter. No need to wait. :) I suppose you need to make sure your mounting system is stable enough to not be affected by shutter shock, if any.

Try a macro lens. Macro lenses will have flatter fields and potentially have sharper optics. You won't need any fancy autofocus or weather sealing. Mount the lens, align the camera, stop down to f/6.3 or something like that ... and shoot with 2 or 10 second delay. Use low ISO and slow shutter speeds. The camera will be mounted so it shouldn't suffer from any hand shaking.

Depending on the size of the document and the height of your stand you will need to decide your focal length. Native K-mount options include 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 100mm. All focal lengths are covered by Pentax lenses and the 90mm focal length is made by Tamron. You said you are working with a K10D which as a cropped APS sensor. The 100mm may be a bit much ... I don't know. Perhaps the 35mm or 50mm focal length will suit you best, especially if your document is pretty big.

If you are not satisfied with your results on the K10D then consider the time spent as a practice session. You can rent some high end gear for a week and photograph everything in one swoop. Something like the K-1 or even a Sony A7 system will have plenty enough resolution for you.

You should see a small line of text in the item description saying something like, “This purchase qualifies for 20% rewards when paid with an Amazon card.” There will also be a little blue “i” icon at the start of the line.
