Not sure the DA*11-18 fits the 'OLED' mantra.... ....though it would be great to see a high resolution OLED back screen. And a monochrome OLED top display... and maybe, just maybe, a hybrid OVF/OLED viewfinder on the next top-spec APSc. Just so long as it still has an OVF!!! :D:D

It's only about 3 years since the K1 was released... ...the DFA* 70-200 predated the K1 by quite a while, so the Ricoh website is probably correct with the 'equivalent' APSc viewing angle at the lens release. Why would they want to update their 'facts' at the release of the Full-frame flagship, or in the intervening 3 years.... ;-)

Very interesting point in the above post:

But I don't know if you remember, GRIII uses Qualcomm Xiaolong and Android system.

The Google translation may have mashed the meaning slightly, but the processor and OS is a revealing change in direction for Ricoh. Maybe that is what is adding to the development time of the next APSc.

Rico - just look at the maths.

All that power saving claim amounts to just an extra 0.1 shots for the GRiii based on the figures given in that document scaled to the reported battery capacity and CIPA shots per battery.

The power savings in the UHS II bus are insignificant in the overall package, where screen, sensor, processor and IBIS all contribute to the energy consumption.

I have put the calculations in my post. At least read it!

Rico - you obviously didn't reach the same conclusion as me - UHS II gains you 0.1 of a shot in power saving. Not very useful...

@reh321

My point was that UHS II makes no (effective) difference to battery life, and I was tired of hearing about how UHS II saves the universe blah, blah...

GRiii sounds like a fine pocket camera with KP performance.

You seem to be making conclusions based on wild assumptions. To transfer data from RAM to NV requires energy; x bytes costs y microwatts (units for illustration - not actual). Are you claiming that UHS II uses less power per data transaction? The RAM is powered all the time the camera is on, it always holds data, whether it is allocated as buffer or something else. “Emptying” the buffer just transfers data from RAM to NV, the RAM is still there consuming power every refresh cycle. The SD card probably takes the same power to write data, though generally doing things faster consumes more power per cycle. You completely fail to make the case that emptying the buffer quickly saves power.

And yes, I would love to have faster write speed. :D Just don’t try to sell it as a way of saving power.

I doubt you can, but I would be interested in your reasoning.

Excuse my ignorance, but when did running electronics faster use less power?

How a slower UHS I bus uses more power than a faster UHS II bus doesn't sound right. And I'm fairly sure the bus is not the only limitation in throughput between the sensor and the SD card.

Surely the major increase in power consumption on the new GRiii is due to the IBIS and additional processor. The KP also has the additional processor, which must consume some extra power compared to previous Pentax DSLRs with the same battery.

Without 'jumping' on you, I think Wex and Park Cameras still stock and sell Pentax, certainly their web sites list the full range... ...though I agree SRS are probably better at pushing Pentax and certainly have the best special deals. :-)

Getting back to the original post... ...talked to some Ricoh guys at the weekend - the absence from the 'Photography Show' at NEC this March is purely down to European marketing budget, or lack of it. Apparently, if the show was a couple of weeks later it would have been OK - April is 'next' year. Photokina absorbed too much this year.

Personally I think it is a great shame - there are so few opportunities to handle Pentax kit elsewhere. I know of someone with a KP and a number of limited lenses that was bought purely as a result of handling a KP with the 20-40 at the last show.

Here is 23.5 x 15.6:

Do you have the FA77??

It can not get smaller - it is brim full of glass. How they made it with 49mm filter thread is remarkable. To update it with focus motor and remove the longitudinal CA would surely make it bigger, not smaller. The aperture ring is at the narrow end of the light path, there's no size saving from just removing it.

I would love a set of DFA Ltds with ring SDM, electronic aperture and AW build. Realistically I know that is unlikely to be any time soon.

In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy the unique rendering of this beautiful jewel of a lens and accept its short-comings.

I don't have the DA* 300, but I do have the DA* 200 and DFA 150-450 and can confirm that the DFA:

a. Focuses a lot faster than the DA*

b. It also has a limiter, that can make it even faster still

c. Focus accuracy on the K1 and KP is excellent.

I've not had the K3, but I suspect that both the K1 and KP are better and quicker at precise focus. (In AF-S, I don't use AF-C)

Attached photo is by my wife using KP and DFA 150-450:

Difference K-AC167 vs K-AC132

The UK Ricoh store lists:

AC ADAPTER KIT K-AC168E compatible with PENTAX K-70 and PENTAX KP.

Not sure why the K1 manual lists the AC132 and the K1ii lists the AC167 - maybe the 'Accelerator' draws noticeably more power and requires a chunkier PSU. If anyone has either, posting the power rating would be illuminating.

A case for coming back to Pentax (KP)

The first time I saw the KP at the Birmingham UK photo show in spring 2017, it had the 20-40 mounted on it. It looked like they were designed to be together. My wife picked it up and (despite being an Olympus M1 user) was very complimentary about it. Last year she bought a KP with the DA70 ltd as a portrait option for a wedding. Then she found a DA21 ltd and DA 20-40 ltd.. majority of her photos are now shot on the KP. (Helps that I have a drawer full of K mount glass..)

I would echo the comments above that for hiking, the 20-40 is better suited for inclement weather. However, the DA21 has an edge for landscape. And the small DA ltd primes on the KP are not much bigger than the M1 with its small primes. Plus the battery last all day on the KP - not something the M1 shines at...

It's also pretty good for birding with the DFA 150-450, but I suspect the D500 has an edge there.

:-)

For about £1000 less you can get the Irix 15mm in F (or K) mount and over a stop more light capture at similar weight to the Z 14-30. Most of the other wide zooms you quote are APSC lenses. Alternatively, the Pentax 15-30 WR is available now, and not shabby on the optical side. ;)

It may focus fine, but only at f1.4... ...it is not the focus motor that is the issue. Both 55-300 PLM and DFA50 have electronic aperture control that older bodies cannot control. It is the aperture control that makes a lens mount KAF4. And the DFA 50 has ring SDM, not DC motor.

Buy a Leftover (new) K-3ii or a KP ?

I have an original K1 and my wife has a KP - the menus and controls are so similar, it is no issue swapping between the cameras (when she lets me...). My wife also has an Olympus M1 with all the good lenses, which is very close in size to the KP. Her results from the KP are noticeably better. I've not used the K3, but the KP focussing is a tad quicker than my K1.

Maybe a KP Mk2 or K3 Mk3 is just around the corner...

Difficult choices! ;-)
