Dumb question about Lightroom and raw files
Posted By jcdoss

Good one. The answer is yes. This means since I'm using Amazon to store a second set of backups in the cloud, and since Amazon won't let me sync my photos to the cloud from a NAS where I store most of my stuff locally, then it will continuously upload new copies every time the raw file changes. This might not be a big deal, since I don't go around modifying exif data all the time (usually once on import) but I do sometimes add new keywords from time to time as they occur to me. I'll have to check/see if its the keywording that is changing the mod date.

A quick question... I know that Lightroom edits never change the raw file, but does LR ever make any kind of changes to the raw file at all? exif? keywording? all that extra stuff is stored in the catalog and not in the file, right? I'm just trying to figure out why my cloud backup system has decided to continuously upload stuff two and three times.

Yes, some jackaninny did say something like that. But in the internet era, where everyone who knows a language can broadcast it worldwide, people will literally say anything.

Although the lens is very very good, it can take some awful photos however. Case in point:

Good news! This mundane photo manages to tick all the boxes in some way or other.
Traffic is FLOWING towards me, which in the photo is FORWARDS, however cars on both sides of the street were moving in their own respective FORWARDS direction. At any rate, I was pretty close to the curb here, and some of the cars were moving faster than posted speed limits, both acts qualifying as INSANE (although the latter much less so). I was also on my WAY BACK FROM a conference this day and as always, had my camera with me to capture the sights of Hot Springs, Arkansas. The town shows both neglect and decay, but also an exciting resurrection on bath house row which used to be an international destination for natural hot springs bathing and hydrotherapy.

This probably qualifies as "architecture inside and out."
This was a bracketed shot thru the windshield while I was stopped on the road. Bracketed because i forgot it was still on, so I kept all three frames and combined them.

[edit] sorry for the forum software-caused smushing effect of the detail. original and all copies i make are much sharper. maybe i'll resize to an outdated forum software compatible version that preserves some detail

We went on a short hike and happened upon this waterfall with the sun in position to produce a fairly strong rainbow. I would have used a polarizer had I had one with me, so instead I hung my deeply polarized Julbo Colorado sunglasses in front of the lens and, with my trusty and brand new (and highly recommended) Peak Design travel tripod, snagged this six second exposure. I got some pixel shift shots also, but haven't given them a thorough review or processed them yet.

Fantastic question. I didn't set it up that way, and in fact had it set up to show who voted for which when I started the poll. Now I go to check and I see it says "The results are hidden for everyone but Administrators, Moderators and thread starter." I am pretty sure it didn't say that when i started the thread, but maybe it did. It's also possible the deep state has infiltrated Pentax Forums and is censoring, but most likely explanation is junk forum software that needs upgraded.

This is just a fun thread for discussion, and I think most have appreciated the mood of this thread. If you don't like your choices, do as Iheiramo did, and make up your own! We're not re-writing the photographers' DSM here, just playing around.

Me: "Bum with a Camera - Subject owns cameras and many lenses, probably a gear junkie, but also takes some pictures. Subject carries gear everywhere, even to the grocery stores. Subject's style therefore is to photograph whatever presents itself, and post-work is fairly routine bumps in saturation/clarity/sharpening for web display and small prints. Subject's output is appreciated by nearly no one because of little aesthetic or documentary value."

I wonder if above fits anyone else?

As I read the article, I would usually react with, "yeah, that's me about X% of the time, except for that part which I never do" for almost each entry. I set the poll up so two choices could be selected, and I picked "Hunter/Gatherer" and "Anarchist" because I'm not very technical about setting up shots (ie, not a Sportman or Director) and I don't like to spend tons of time in post (ie, def. not an Illustrator). I do basic planning, try to limit to themes (ie, 52Frames project, weekly assignment material, imposing self-limitations wrt gear or technique). Of course, I've never earned a single cent off photography.

Thanks. I don't have mine on display, but I used to. I still occasionally get the urge to find a glass cabinet of sorts and clear some space somewhere near a comfy couch on which I could sit and behold the beauty of electromechanical photo-optical engineering of the present and past 50 years. I blame my grandparents because when I was a wee lad with way more friends than I have today (but no liquor), they gave me some beatup and probably broken cameras to play with. One was a TLR with a waist level finder which I thought was some kind of magical. Anyway, now on days when everyone else are out dining together, hanging with friends or extended family, or chasing tail at the local bar, I'm at home in my sweat pants (if you're lucky) and a T-shirt staring at my Pentax collection wondering when Sandy will be by with that wine he promised me (but secretly content to just sit there and stare and wait).

Maybe Adam should start up a "Losers" subforum and sequester me there.

Am I the only one here who likes to sit their gear on a shelf and then stare at it for hours?
