I have previously (and with only moderate success) caught shots of this bird from a distance, with the 55-300mm PLM lens. This time, there it was in my own garden, tasting the delights of the blooms of my Moonlight Grevillea. And, from the doorway in my lounge room there I was with my new 150-450mm. Tripod, Vanguard GT 300H pistol grip ball head. Click. Cropped.

I wish I could take this kind of shot with this lens on my monopod - maybe it is just a matter of lots of practice. (It really is a monster of a lens - both in terms of size and weight. But it in another world from my previous birding lens in terms of reach).

Nature Gray Fantail In My Garden

The Photography Fairy Godmother has been smiling down on me: since finally receiving The Monster (the Pentax 150-450mm lens) in March this year there has been an increase in bird numbers and bird varieties visiting my less than one year old garden in my back yard.

This little guy is one of the newcomers. Because there was a Willy Wagtail flying around at the same time, I first thought this was another Willy. He even performed the same aerial acrobatics of catching insects in flight with sudden changes in direction in mid-flight. - but closer inspection proved it to be a Gray Fantail. Unlike the Willy, it wasn't one to land and perch for more than a second or two.

Good one, Todd. Very Sharp. Amazing how well the 55-300 PLM does these kinds of close-ups.

Late to the party, but that is a very well composed and beautifully executed shot. The lighting is very well balanced.

Weevil - two amazing bird shots! Beautiful. Your opening shot for this thread, as someone else said, was also great, with excellent feather detail. Really nice work.

Amazing shots - focus is spot on! You took these with an 800mm lens?? Are you using a monster solid tripod? Or some sort of camera bean bag? Whatever - extraordinary results.

A very entertaining series of shots! He is certainly a very colourful bird, and the mosaic-type pattern of the body plumage is eye-catching. Good head shots in the second series!

For some reason, I have only just come across this series now.
Wonderful shots, Heinrich. In the second shot he really looks like he is giving it his all - beak wide open, (throat no doubt in top gear) and tail fanning out!

Both pics are very good, Aaron - but the first one - with the dragonfly catch - you have really nailed the focus: top quality image!

Yesterday, another "new" bird in my garden - new in that, while I have seen the bird before in local nature reserves and parks, this was the first time I have seen it in my own back yard. At first I thought it was a slightly different (maybe juvenile) looking Willy Wagtail - there was one flitting about at exactly the same time so I thought "a pair?? or parent and juvenile". But when I took a closer look, no.

It is a Gray Fantail. It performed the aerial acrobatics of catching insects in mid-air like the Willy Wagtail, but unlike the Willy, who will sometimes perch and look around for a while, this little blighter rarely perched for more than a second or two!

I love the showy "bib" under the throat of this bird. There is also something "jurassic" about it's naked head, and the large bump or horn on its beak

So today we got brave, and took the 150-450mm off the tripod, and put it on our monopod, with the Vanguard G 300HT pistol grip head with cable release. Shot about 150 pics - kept about 13 !!! I can see we are going to have a long learning curve with this lens!!!

Here is a couple of the retained pics:
