My two tips:
  1. Pretend you're shooting with film again. Yes it's easy to rapid fire away with digital because it's "free", and I admit I've captured moments doing this that I likely would not have gotten with film. But every now & then I'll pretend I have film in the camera and I find I'm talking a lot more time & care, end results are excellent and I find it's way easier on the "delete' key when going through a session.

  2. Dig out one or two of those old film cameras, load 'em up with some ASA 100 (or whatever your preference) and head out shooting. If you've got a couple of bodies load one up with B&W. Send the film away to a good lab. I've taken pictures with an old Spotmatic with the super takumar 50mm prime lens that I've yet to match with any of my current cameras. Waiting for & getting the envelope back with your images brings back a flood of memories, and the satisfaction of seeing good results several days (or weeks) after the fact is well worth reliving.

That is all.

ps. count how many times you look at the camera back after a shot while your shooting film.

Sigma 18-250 not working on KS2

She bought the lens a few years ago so it's out of warranty, but the thing is it still works perfectly fine on any of the other two cameras. She's been eyeing up the new Pentax 18-270 for this camera, in the meantime my Pentax 18-250 works fine so we'll just swap lenses and I'll use the Sigma on my K10D.

I was using optical viewfinder only, I don't use live view with any of my DSLR cameras.

Sigma 18-250 not working on KS2

Well that was weird - put the lens on again and it works fine, with or without lens OS on. She was taking bird pics and had it on Tv mode with a fast shutter, and it was good, but even when I put it on auto modes it was fine. The only thing I can think of the battery wasn't fully charged yesterday because she wanted to try the camera out - but I don't think that should make any difference..

update - I spoke too soon - for some reason the Sigma lens just randomly stops working completely. Some of the numbers will start flashing on the back screen (usually aperture) and nothing works. Cycle through modes etc, and nothing. Power the camera off and on again & everything works again, then will just stop. When it's doing this I can hear a whirring & sometimes clicking sound in either the lens or camera body. It definitely seems like there is some compatibility issues with this lens. I guess the lens could be faulty, but if I move it over to my K10 or Kx it works perfectly and I can't replicate the problem.

thanks for the reply - it seemed to work for a few pictures if she cycled the camera's power, then would just quit. I will try it myself later today and get more details, and make sure the in lens OS is off. Will post back with results.

Sigma 18-250 not working on KS2

Santa brought my wife a new K-S2, she loves it & really enjoys the extra features it has over her K-x. However today she tried to put her Sigma 18-250 on it and it doesn't seem to like the lens at all. If she powers the camera off and back on it will for for a couple of pictures, then just quits working with the shutter speed on the OSD just flashing. She said she tried turning the OS off on the lens but it made no difference.

I took my Pentax 18-250 off of my K10 and put it on the K-S2 and it works just fine, as I speak she's filling an SD card with shots from our bird feeders. I put her Sigma lens on my K10 and it works fine again, as it does on her K-x.

Is there a setting somewhere on the camera and/or lens we need to change? I could just leave my Pentax 18-250 on it but I prefer it over the Sigma, and she's used to the Sigma lens and would like to get it working,

thanks in advance

I like using her K-x ok, but I really miss the dual control dials that my K10D has, it'll be nice to have them on her camera now.

I wanted to get her a K3 or K3 II, but I think that'll be my next camera, I'm thinking there should be a price drop pretty soon when Pentax releases it's next model.

Well, the wi-fi is more of a nice to have - but it would still be disappointing if it didn't work. I pulled the trigger on one last night so it'll get here in time, so I guess I'll find out.

I don't recall reading anything terrible negative about the wi-fi in the reviews, however. Are some here finding it flaky?

I was looking at at getting my wife one to replace her K-x, and was thinking about the K3 or K3II but they are still a little out of my range and overall the K-S2 looks like it would suit her, (and the fact I can get it in white which is how she likes to differentiate between hers and my cameras)

She's getting into some portrait work, and the larger image size and built in Wi-fi look like they would be good for this application. I may also pick up a 50mm prime lens for it.

Her most used lens though, is a Sigma 18-250, and it's quite bulky diameter & weight wise compared to my Pentax 18-250 lens, and I'm wondering with the smaller body mentioned in the review on this board, if it may be an awkward combination.

I thought I'd check here and see if anyone here has a similar lens on their K-S2 and how it handles with it.

Thanks in advance.

Very interesting & informative thread. I came SO close to pulling the trigger on a K3 II last weekend, but decided it was just outside the budget for now, and the K3 with battery base thrown in for less money is awfully tempting. The astrotracer is what really appeals to me on the II though.

I just got a Celestron 130mm telescope for my birthday :-) and am going to be trying it for photos once I get over the initial thrill of just being able to see so much with it. I'm not sure if I'm going to go with a T mount & one of my cameras or get one of the celestron webcam type cameras that fit on it. I've never heard of these T mounts before but to me it just looks like an M42 adapter that screws into an adapter that fits where the telescopes eyepiece would go.. is this correct?

Last April I was getting some hand held shots of Venus when it was so bright, and decided to try a couple of Jupiter too with just the telephoto with my wifes Kx and my Nex-5N. I was pleasantly surprised when the Jovian moons were visible with just the lens, here is a shot I took with the Nex camera and 200mm lens on it. I don't know if it was lens flare or just jiggle, but the out of focus moons made them look a lot bigger than they are for kind of a cool effect.

interesting thread- I've been tossing the idea of selling my K10D to help procure some funds for the K3II I have my eye on, but I still enjoy shooting with it a great deal, and I like how it feels with the battery pack with its extra shutter & aperture wheels. I think I'm just going to hang on to it, I find it a lot more intuitive to use than the Kx I got for my wife, and although my NEX-5N has become my grab-n-go camera because of it's small size, video capability & excellent IQ, when I'm composing "serious" pictures I still always reach for the K10.

I had a Chinon CE4 - my first SLR and it was a great camera. I bought a power winder for it that had a few functions, interval shooting, # of frames to shoot and various delays IIRC. Yes it takes K-mount, in fact I used my Chinon 80-200 on my K10D quite a bit when I just had the K10D kit lens - worked pretty good.

Thanks for the reply - odd though that some orders with li-ion batteries are ok, while others are not.. maybe the secret is in wording the description different?

Still puzzled why the Purolater option is gone though - they are a courier company and not the USPS

GoPro 3 has decent stills, way better than GoPro 1 or 2, 4 is probably better yet - but it's not designed to take stills but it's always got that super wide FOV. Using it beyond it's intended use is iffy IMO.

My go to camera when I want to slip it in my pocket is NEX-5N - very good video and stills in a small package, but probably not what you're looking for.

WG4 is good suggestion, bought my daughter one and it's a nice little unit, decent video specs, time lapse, good stills & rugged too.

I've bought 4 cameras & quite a few lenses etc. from B&H now and the experience has always been nice & streamlined - I especially like the option for B&H handled customs clearance for items shipped to Canada.

One thing though, the USPS restrictions with li-ion batteries seems to be messing up options for Canadian orders. For my last order (today) I added an extra battery to the order, same as the one that ships with the camera. As soon as I did this the Purolater option and B&H customs options were no longer available. I removed the extra battery and was able to then choose them again.

Same thing with the Pentax K3 I tried to order (I see this in a previous thread too), for some reason the Purolater & B&H customs option are not available. The message that shows mentions the USPS & li-ion batteries restriction, but Purolator is not USPS so I was kind of puzzled. I contacted B&H and the helpful fellow that replied just send me an invoice and said I could just enter the invoice number and my phone number in the Track Order page and I could pay for it then - but it still would not let me, telling me that this order could not be completed online.

I've ordered 3 cameras in the past month with the options mentioned. All three cameras (2 Sony action cams & 1 A5100) have li-ion batteries shipped with them, and I was able to use the Purolater and B&H customs options with no issues.

Now I'm just assuming it had something to do with adding li-ion batteries to the order or in the case of the K3, perhaps the words "battery pack" caused something to trigger in the ordering process?.

Almost bought a K-3

I think I may hold off a little longer for the K3 - what I thought was a black friday price seems to be the new price for this - but the addition of a battery pack thrown in is still very tempting. I have a feeling they're about to release it's successor soon so I think the price will hold and maybe even drop if stores try to move these out fast just before a new release comes out.

I've done some number crunching and only got room in the budget for either the Sony A5100 + 55-210 lens (discounted from $348 to $148 when purchased with A5100) at $646 or the K3 at $796. With the Sony I get my wife's Christmas present taken care of and also the longer reach lens I've wanted for my NEX-5n for a steeply discounted price. With the 55-210 I'll have 3 extra lenses to share between the Sony cameras then (I have 19 & 30mm Sigma primes)

Right now it's the best bang for my buck, but I'll reassess my finances after the holiday slaughter and keep an eye on boxing day sales up here, where sometimes good bargains can be had.

The weakness of our loonie against the greenback right now is a factor too.

I'm in the same boat - have a K3 in the cart at B&H and ready to pull the trigger - 800 clams with the grip thrown in is pretty dang good deal. I saw the ebay deal and missed it (and here in Canada yet!), but I would put a battery pack on it anyway so really it works out to about the same.

My K10D has served me well, I bought it at a discounted price near the end of it's run (what I usually do) as well. One of my sons was looking at DSLR and was hearing a lot of Nikon and Canon hype and wondering which one of the two to get. I told him I'd sell him the K10D cheap with battery grip (a must have, IMHO) and kit lens, so he's trying it out now. Told him the advantage of Pentax is you can use all their older glass if you want and I have quite a bit of it laying around.

For a lens I'm hanging on to my Pentax 18-250 DA I bought for my K10D shortly after I bought it, but the 18-270 is looking pretty tempting too.

I'l probably pull the trigger today - but also sorely tempted with B&H's prices on the Sony A5100 and A6000, which are both also $200 off, $498 & $598. The A5100 is an impressive looking unit, even some features the A6000 lacks, but the A6000 has the EVF, and the biggest reason I like shooting with DSLR over my mirrorless is I prefer viewfinders to live view LCD for composing.

I have a NEX-5N and it's been my go to camera lately and I love the video on the NEX series of cameras. Maybe I'll get my better 1/2 the Sony for Christmas if I can swing it :-) - she loves her Kx but likes how my Nex5 easily slips in my pocket just to take along, and the 16-50 lens on the A series Sony makes them even more compact.

Interesting thread - I have a K3 in the cart from B&H photo and was totally unaware of this issue until I came over to this board to look at an old thread I did years ago and decided to peruse the K3 forum. This is something I never experienced with my K10D, in extreme cold (-30 & colder) or in hot weather.

I'm assuming any K3's purchased now would be well past the serial number range where the problems seem most persistent.

Pretty nice stitches for aerial shots!

I got one of my Flamewheel frames up in the air for the first time in awhile last week, pointed my GoPro 3 BE straight down for this shot. Must say I'm pretty impressed with the GP3 still shots, especially compared to the original Gopro HD

This model is the "Exposure", which I think was the pinnacle of Mike's AP planes. I built it to haul my K10D or my wifes Kx (when she wasn't around) but with the purchase of a NEX-5N there is really no need to fly my DSLR.

As mentioned before my next project is a hexacopter but one of my favourite vendors just came out with a new plane, which is awfully tempting..

If you want more flight time I'd seriously look at a different frame than the Phantom. I know the Phantom is nice with its built in mounts but brushless gimbals are coming down in price and can be found for almost any camera these days. Actually for stills a servo gimbal is sufficient enough.

Some frames come with very good battery mounting options for balance, particularly the "H" style frames which also eliminate the front motors out of the picture when shooting ultra wide shots. There is a point of diminishing returns for battery weight vs flight time - a good place to read up on this is the aerial photography forum at RCgroups.com site.

Tony - I built a large foamy plane that was specifically designed to carry a DSLR, with two stacked 3300 batteries I easily get 30+ minutes out of it. It was designed to fly really slow and once trimmed nicely will just crawl along at a brisk walking pace, but it's a handful in any wind. I use it for video mostly but have had my canon on it shooting stills while shooting video with a gopro or Drift action cam too, or two go pros with one shooting stills.

Here is a pic of it:

And here is how I kept track of progress when my roof was replaced two summers ago without having to use a ladder :-)

I fly two flamewheel 450(mm) frames and a hoverthings 450 frame, have DJI Naza FC's on the flamewheels and Arduino based FC on the other. I'll admit I haven't got the NEX-5 airborne yet, but anticipate no issues as it's not that heavy with the 16, 19 or 30mm lenses I have for them, the biggest thing will be fashioning a mount.

I was looking at the Phantom too, neatly packaged and pre configured, but changed my mind because of battery size restrictions etc. and my Naza machines are basically the same thing anyway, with the added option of putting beefier motors on them to haul more payload. As it is I can fly my gopro in its case with a 3000 Mah battery for a flight time of about 7 minutes (in calm conditions)

This years project is going to be a heavy lift hexacopter, which I'm hoping to get 10+ minutes of flight time while easily handling a payload like the Nex with it's kit lens, (although I can really see no reason to fly with anything but the prime lenses)

For now my favorite cam for stills are my cheapo Canon A490's with CHDK intervolometer on them, the GoPro 3 BE takes pretty decent stills but I don't always like that ultra wide effect.

Here are a couple from my A490 I took last winter:

Nice shots! I fly 3 quadcopters (and a plane) for aerial photography & video, 2 have DJI FC's and the other uses a multiwii board. Lot's use gopro's for this and the gp3 actually has nice snaps, but you have that distortion. I was thinking of getting a Q just for this purpose, but in the end decided on a NEX-5N because of it's video capabilities.

Also noticed the WG-2 we bought our daughter has intervolometer capability (as well as 720-60p video) so I hope to sneak it out for a flight soon too.. :-)
