To FA* 24/2 or not?

The FA*24 is not a lens for those who prize sharpness above all else. What it does offer is colour and contrast, and of course AF. I have one and I like what it offers, but I doubt I'd have paid the equivalent of €550 for one. Still, if that's the market environment and you want that FL and AF, there's not much choice. A D-FA 24-70 is going to cost you a damned sight more, and it weighs a lot more – I have an FA*28-70 and it doesn't often go in my travel kit for that reason.

Lower spec K1

If it makes the total cost of investing in a Pentax FF system cheaper than the opposition, then I'd have thought that would be a significant point. I expect the K-1 (perhaps with a couple of small enhancements, to justify rebadging it as the K-1ii) to fall in price significantly when its replacement as K-mount range-topper is announced. A consequence, I imagine, will be a re-adjustment of the APS-C range, I suggest with the Kp moving down-range and a new higher-spec replacement to justify staying with APS-C at around the same price as the discounted K-1(ii)

Interesting that people ask "what's it for?" because in past times that FL was the default step-up from the almost universal "kit" 50mm. I still have my SMC Takumar 135/2.5 in M42 mount. I used it for all sorts of subjects from portraits to landscapes. Zooms have made us a bit lazy.

Thanks for all the pics Ė I had no idea there was such a broad collection of CitroŽns in the USA.

Just to be clear, all the hydro-pneumatic CitroŽns from the first DS19 in 1955 to the last C5 this year had ride height maintenance. The suspension was greatly developed over the years, and has only just been phased out, in favour if a yet-to-be-revealed electro-mechanical system. Also, every hydro-pneumatic DS (not just the cabriolet) could be driven on 3 wheels, provided it was only the off-side rear that was removed!

Lastly, the driving lights on the DS21 also turned in the direction of the front wheels, which must have been disconcerting in the event of an opposite-lock slide, but the under-steering FWD big CitroŽns got into such a position very rarely!

Yesterday Metz confirmed they have no resources to fix the K-1 Bug

I recently bought a Metz M400 to use with my K-1, but mainly because it's fairly powerful for its small(ish) size, as I already have an AF48. I wasn't aware of the slave issue with the K-1, so it's a pity I can't use them together. Fortunately, I'm not into using multiple flashes, so the matter will hopefully be resolved by the time I get around to it.

With this lens break my K-1?

A pressed metal part like this aperture lever shouldn't be difficult to straighten up, once you've removed the (in this case, plastic) lens mount, but that's not a job for a beginner, as the contact balls and the springs behind them are easy to scatter if you're not careful. That lens is cheap but remarkably good value, optically, so it would be a shame for it to not be repaired and used. However, how it got damaged and what else might have happened to its other parts is the question here.

Full-frame lens on a crop body not advisable?

Regardless of equivalence theories and smacking down Mr Northrup, one advantage of using 35FF lenses on APS-C bodies is that, with the later Pentax DSLRs, some of that otherwise wasted light in the bigger image circle can actually be put to use with sensor shift, both for vibration reduction and for image shift, including in-camera correction for converging verticals. Of course, you don't get that in other systems.

Found used ist D. only takes black images

Hi, Nick, and welcome to Pentax Forums. The *istD was a nice camera (I still have mine) although very limited in comparison even with later models from five years ago, so I'd be wary of trying to have it repaired, too. Having said that, I presume you've checked that the Compact Flash card is working. When you say that the images are black, does that mean when you preview them in the camera, or after youve downloaded them from the CF card? Aside from checking the shutter operation with the lens off, as seventhdr has suggested, I have no other advice to give you.

Nikon firing nearly 10% of photo staff and shutting down DSLR lens / compact plant

It may be an impossible task, of course, but markets move depending on people's perceptions - they don't exist on their own. If you can't change those perceptions for a requisite number of people, then I agree with what you're saying, although I think the horse and buggy analogy is as fraught as my coffee-drinking analogy. However, it's not impossible to change perceptions, as political marketers (among others) well know.

Yes, so if that's the case, then it's the product, which is why I said it's either one or the other. Nonetheless, we know that the phone camera comes with a lot of limitations: the task for marketing is to present a case that convinces enough people to part with some more money, because those limitations have sufficient importance to warrant it.

Now, having just watched a lot of people on holiday holding up phones and tablets to photograph things they thought worthy of capturing along the way, I realise that task isn't an easy one, because those people think their phone camera and its digital zoom works well enough for their purpose. If camera makers are going to break people out of that thought process, then they need to convince them that their photos are somehow unworthy.

It's not impossible: look at how coffee culture has developed in the last 40 years. Some people still like instant coffee, and some will drink it if there's nothing else available, but those who appreciate good coffee aren't satisfied by it. Analogies like that are fraught, of course, but you get the point. No camera-maker is telling people their phone cameras produce crap pictures (ignore the fact that some aren't: we're talking marketing here) so naturally a lot of people don't even consider that things could easily be better. Every camera manufacturer is intent on market share, rather than growing the market. In a shrinking market, that's not a recipe for longevity.

Which is the starting point for Nikon's explanation of why their compact lines have failed, of course, effectively "It's not our products that are inadequate: it's your limited understanding of their benefits". While that may be true in a broad sense, in a business context, if fault is to be found, it's either with their range of cameras, or their marketing.

Agreed, although the resolution of those Nikon lenses and Tri-X was a little fantastic, but modern police shows have an echo of that with the inevitable "Enhance that CCTV image, can you?".

As has been pointed out numerous times, Canon and Sony have their more profitable other lines generating returns that may be used to prop up the smaller camera lines, whereas Nikon doesn't. I really don't know if they do or not, and I doubt you'd be able to tell from their published accounts, if they've a mind to disguise the practice from their investors and comptetitors (and maybe themselves), but there are limits to everything, as Ricoh has discovered.

On the other hand, maybe it's just that Nikon blinked first.

If it hadn't been for some debris on the runway at Frankfurt, it'd possibily still be flying. You could also add "beautiful" to that list, though you probably need to have seen one in reality to fully appreciate that.

Who remembers the Antonioni movie "Blow-Up" from the 1960s? Richardson seems to have believed the life-style of the main character was a role model for fashion photographers, but nobody could have accused him of being as cute as David Hemmings. I wonder if he drove a convertible Rolls-Royce with an old-fashioned telephone on the dashboard.

At the wide end, there's nothing to touch the Sigma, but it's a damned heavy piece of glass to add to your backpack, so mine tends to stay at home much of the time. That's one of the criteria that will determine whether this new Pentax lens goes on my shopping list, or not.

You've nicely captured a couple of 21st century phenomena (the living statue and the selfie) in one shot. I initially thought the picture would be better if you could see more of the woman's face, but on reflection it's more of a comment on the purpose of a selfie to hide the face. Anyway, you've positioned the two people well. Nice work.

Good luck with that thought. I've just come back from 4 weeks in Europe, and if anything, it seems to be still on the rise, ("Where did you take this?" "Can't remember. Don't I look good, though?")

Disco evolved into "dance music", which is code for jumping on the spot to repetitive beats played extremely loudly. Be careful what you wish for – personal drones are on the rise.

Speaking generally, the best lies are the ones with truth at the starting point.

As mecrox points out, there are several of those embedded in the post in question. The foolish assertion of Ricoh's controlling interest in Tamron isn't one of them.

Besides, the conclusion that this is the last APS-C lens from Pentax is clearly nonsensical, as it is a wild extrapolation from the starting point, as with the claim that it is a Tamron design. I was watching Peter Sellers playing Inspector Clouseau last night, and his logic was far more convincing. :D

Regardless of its origins (I suspect pure Pentax, but I don't care that much) this lens should be one to watch.

It has a convex front element, a distance scale window and the zoom and focus rings are in the same places as those on the Tokinas. Then again, humans and bananas share a fair bit of DNA, too. :D

I had a Sigma 10-20, but sold it in favour of the 8-16. Depending on the weight, this lens, coupled with the Kp, could make a useful travel combination - my K-1 and Limiteds are putting a crease in my neck at the moment.

Some days are good - this one ended perfectly. I had my K-1 with the FA31/1.8 Limited attached, when this scene offered itself to me, on the way to dinner and a performance of Fado music.

On the other hand, Porto presents very many photo opportunities, so a bad shot is hard to take there.
