Definitely one of my favorite old school tele zooms from back when I still shot with a K-5. I might be tempted to nab it for my a7s if it's still around once my paycheck rolls in ;)

What's the difference between the petal lens hoods and the round ones?

Petal hoods are usually optimized for a certain focal length so as to get maximum coverage without vignetting. Take the shortest edge of the petal hood and slice off the rest and you get the optimal circle hood for said focal length.

I'm a current a7s owner and former GR shooter. I definitely think that you can fit the sensor into a GR type body if you disable video mode, given how compact the a7s is even with the extra bits for an evf and video functions. Knowing how compact they made the GR lens back in the film era, the only issue I see in regards to doing this would be the heat dissipation factor. Since ricohtax have taken quite a liking to using magnesium alloy for all their high end models, it might even be possible to design it so that the whole camera can act as a heat sink. Sorry if I'm rambling, I just really love the idea of an a7s/GR hybrid

IMO, 50mp cameras exist for the select few professionals who need it for billboards and whatnot, and is then sold to everyone else who thinks they need it to fund more research for important things like clean high ISOs and dynamic range.

Looking at sony

I have no idea what you're trying to ask for here, so I'll just cover the points that I can parse through from your post. I'm currently a Sony shooter using the a6000 with plans of adding an a7s once my Xmas bonus comes in.

1. Video quality is damn good, although rendering video can be a pain since it does take quite a bit of computing power to process the codec. I'm running an overclocked i5 with 32gb of ram and using hardware acceleration with a GTX970 and a 12-minute video across 2 cameras with effects/colorgrading/noise reduction/sharpening/etc took a good 6 hours to render and export. Haven't had a chance to work with much XAVC-S/S-LOG2 yet, but from what I can tell, its fantastic if you know what you're doing. If you're new to cinematic color grading and come from shooting video from non-cinema grade cameras (such as the d600, 5d3, ENG style camcorders, etc), its entirely overkill. If not, you might find issue in the slight loss quality in the color gradations vs working from native prores footage (since it is only 8-bit 422@50mbps), but its perfectly usable with some work.

2. Image quality is pretty damn good on the sensor level. All the dynamic range and detail you've come to expect is there, the question of megapixels doesn't concern me too much since I don't need to crop tiny portions of my frame. I came from shooting a K-x, so 12 megapixels seems entirely adequate for most situations. The 24mp on the a6000 is nice to have and the sensor performs well, but I was just as happy with the performance from the 16mp on the K-5 I used to shoot.

3. When shooting crop, you've got plenty of good options as far as fast glass goes. There's the lovely zeiss 24mm f/2, the stabilized 35mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8, and plenty of options for adapting lenses , additionally with autofocus if you go A mount or EF mount. AF on adapted lenses works, but don't expect to shoot sports with them. As for full frame, remember that its a relatively new mount. Like with crop, you have plenty of options when adapting other lenses, but native first party lens offerings are limited to the 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200 f/4 zooms, the zeiss 35mm f/2.8 and zeiss 50mm f/1.8. as well as the upcoming 28-135 f/4 cinema zoom (which I definitely lust over)

4. The small size of the sony ecosystem was actually a happy change for me. I came from dual-wielding gripped 5D's and K-5's with big/fast glass, so the weight savings were quite welcome. I've never found the number of controls lacking in relation to the K-5, and while I do miss the AF joystick from the 5D is missed at times, I've never found it to really slow me down since I'd given up freelance sports shooting years ago. There's enough buttons on the camera for every function I find essential and the quick menu on the interface easily holds the functions I use occasionally. The EVF is actually quite good, so I do not miss my pentaprism at all. That said, nothing compares to a good old medium format viewfinder, so maybe I set myself up to not expect too much ;)

Hope this helps!

Selling off the last of my lenses, since I've switched to Sony

Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX DG - 320 280 Shipped+Paypal'd
Some signs of use, comes with box, pouch, hood and rear cap, I've lost the front cap somewhere unfortunately. Worked great with my K-5 and worked even better with a speedbooster on my a6000.

Samyang 85mm f/1.4 - 220 Shipped+Paypal'd sold
I've lost count of the times I've owned this lens, kept coming back to it for its gorgeous bokeh. Comes with box, hood and caps, maybe pouch too if I can find it.

Generic PK -> NEX speedbooster adapter - 50 Shipped+Paypal'd sold
Get that full frame look with your aps-c Sony. Some signs of use and comes with caps.

What's your ideal lens kit?

Things have changed a lot for me in the last year and a half. I've switched to sony (le gasp!) but am still rocking my kmount glass via speedbooster

I'd love to see a pentax take on a sony a7s faux-cinema sort of camera with silent IBIS, as I've gone rather heavily into the motion side of things with my recent work. Its kind of sad to see every other camera maker putting out bodies with at least decent, if not great video capability, while pentax offers the bare minimum in video performance.

As for lenses, that new sony 28-135mm f/4 cine lens is pretty much ideal for what I currently shoot, although in keeping with my daydreaming about a pentax cinema camera, I'd love to see a 16-70mm f/2.8 with power zoom, aperture ring and geared for cine usage. I still love fast lenses, so a DA*55 along with the sigma 18-35mm would handily round out the rest of my dream kit.

The wonderful and cheap DA35mm f/2.4 would get you by pretty well. Its sharp across the frame, cheap, has decent bokeh when called upon and passably corrected for aberrations and related artifacts

GR - 500
K-5 - 325
FA50 - 200

Item Location

Item Description
Making my painful exodus away from shooting stills into the scary world of video, so I'm letting go of most of my current pentax kit :( 900 takes everything!

Ricoh GR - 520500
GR in great condition, comes with original box and cables along with 2 extra aftermarket batteries and charger. A few scratches on the rear LCD and some dust in the hotshoe is all it has to show for its use.

Pentax K-5 - 350325
My trusty main body for the last few years. It's got its battle scars. the button for the popup flash is gone, so there's no way of using the popup flash unless you want to shove a fingernail under the flash each time you want to use it. It's got a good number of dents and scratches, but everything outside of the flash works perfectly. Comes with original box, O-ME53 magnifier, 3rd party grip, two extra aftermarket batteries and charger.

FA 50mm f/1.4 - 220200
Some signs of use and there's a ding in the distance scale window. There are a few marks on the front element coating that don't show up in photos, took some microfiber and wiped it off. Glass is clean otherwise. Comes with rear cap and original box.

Sony NEX 5N - 190 SOLD
My video gateway drug, going to be upgrading from this. Works great, shows light signs of use. Only comes with stock battery and charger.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 - 220 SOLD
Definitely a workhorse, shows it too. The ring that holds the lens hood is cracked but holds the hood securely despite this. There are a few marks on the front element coating that don't show up in photos, took some microfiber and wiped it off. Glass clean otherwise. Comes with rear cap and hood.

As always, feel free to ask me questions and I'll be happy to give discounts if you buy several things together. Photos to come as soon as I can manage. For trades, I'm looking for a sony A6000 or a samyang 14mm.

It comes in several variants, the standard one taking Mamiya 645 with option for Nikon, Hasselblad or PL mounts available. That, and it's a 65mm size sensor, hence the name, so most definitely MF territory as far as video goes ;)

FA50 to DA55 upgrade?

To answer your questions, yes and yes. I've found it to be sharper, has more contrast, handles PF better and has smoother bokeh. However, the extent at which it performs better is very marginal and you're probably better off spending that money elsewhere. My broke-college-kid logic says that the diminishing returns you get for essentially spending 2-3 times the money for the DA* isn't really worth it, especially since the baseline performance coming out of my FA50 is so solid. If you have to have "the best", then go for it. Otherwise, just save your money.

There definitely exists medium format video cameras out there, Phantom's 65 Gold is the first that comes to mind. That said, they're rare and insanely expensive creatures and I'd love it if someone were to do with medium format exactly what the Canon 5D mark 2 did to the super35 market. Granted, it'd still be relatively expensive in relation to regular 35mm video-capable DSLRs. But compared to some cinema cameras out there, something in the price range of the 645D's original msrp of $10k would actually be a steal for a video camera with that big of a sensor.
