D800/D600 shutter too loud...crikey you have never shot with a D700 then...that shutter sounds really loud..but it makes up for it in beautiful images that are in focus..so Ill look past the loud shutter...

Nicole

you were robbed mate...as for the shows format...not too may amateur Togs have access to a studio full of high end gear...so them chucking you in at the deep end to see of you could swim or not was pretty deplorable...Im sure you'd have no problem with street photography, landscapes or Portraits using your own gear and having enough time to do it......the show should be on a commercial channel, reality TV shouldn't be on auntie Beep...

i wonder how they will introduce the drama to a landscape shoot.... probably set the Togs up in a field of bullocks or camels...shaking my head now

the bloke cracked me up...full of arty crap..and produced the worst image...you on the other hand are a quality Tog....

yes the D4 looks great too..but for me too expensive.. also I never shoot in anything other than single shot..so 12 FPS aint for me...there been some good things being said about the new 36 mega pixel sensor in the D800... there's also a lot of very affordable nikor lenses for the F mount ...after a few reviews if they are all positive Ill be selling my D300s for a upgrade...

good interview with Jim Brandenburg here A month with the Nikon D800: Exclusive interview with Jim Brandenburg | Video product reviews | What Digital Camera

if what he says is true..the D800 will be a keeper for a number of years

one word..Nikon D800....now thats a real head turner..expensive yes $2999 us twice the price of a K5..but I expect 4 times the camera..so on that logic its cheaper than a K5...LOL.......or a D700 at $2200US older but still a great camera ..also a Nikon AFS 300F4...a fantastic lens at only $1000 is a steal.....Nikon 50AFS 1.8 at only $250 US is a no brainier..very sharp...and great contrast... a nikon AFD 60 mm macro for $350..nikon 80-200 F2.8..very sharp..and cheap for $1000 US

I was trying a SP at the weekend..its frustrating to say the least.. particularly under studio strobes where you chasing the perfect exposure!!.......I was lucky to have my sons at home...so I set up a bar stool and prefocused on one of my lads who sat on it to make sure the distance was always gonna be correct..then I switched to Manual focus and used the 12 sec timer....but it not a easy thing to do...and quite often the pose is crap...I have now got a new respect for people that have pulled a good SP out of the bag

fair enough.....

I was using a K7 the other day...and after using my D300s I can see the attraction ...

I had two K5s...but they suffered the dreaded FF in low light..so I left the pentax camp...but if a k5 came along with a FA 77 in good light Id be well happy with it

surely more DOF would get you out of jail...if your trying for really critical focusing and very shallow DOF..use either your D300 or the D3s....But I cant understand why your using anything other than the D3s anyway..its probably the best DSLR ever made up until the D4 release...!!

have you read Falks thread on his white paper study of the K5s AF ?..this was done with the original FW and the new one that was supposed to address the situation ..nothing wrong with the K5s AF in good light..in fact Id say it was pretty good..it only gets dodgy when the light dims...but its no worse than a canon 5dII..LOL...

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-news-rumors/134215-lumolabs-pentax...published.html

Im no Nikon fanboy mate ..just a well rounded human that looks beyond brand preferences etc...and Id be well happy if the K5s low light Af was really sorted with any lens....and to be honest..if there are so many happy users of the K5 { I know there are}..then a purchaser would surely take that into consideration and not just mine and a few others concerns?....

Id be interested in your finding of the AF...not so much the quickness of it..but rather its accuracy ..in my experience I found a tendency for it to front focus in low light with SDM and HSM lenses..but to work ok with screw-drive primes , this was using a F2.8 lenses though to gain as much light and shutter speed as possible...but even when using the flash at 1/60..it would still be OOF due to the FF issues my pair of K5's had...is yours new ?...Id be well pleased if the problem is really sorted ..
yep I know what you mean about all the bits and bobs added up..when I sold my pentax gear I was in the same boat...

if I could afford two systems..Id love a K5 and a F77

read back through my posts in this thread..you will see that I gave a opinion on why the K5 might be a better option than a D300s and why a D300s was better than a k5 in other areas..so Id say that Id given the Op a pretty decent overview from a user that's owned both.....so if that cracks you up..lovely...

what gets my goat is people like Normhead...who has had neither bodies but jumps on any post that is trying to give a honest opinion as if its hierarchy...my personally experiences have shown me that given a choice..Id not give up a D300s for a K5...and for me that's the truth...others may have a different experience...and good on em for posting it if it helps the op get a even perspective ....best advise to the OP is go try a K5 first..if the latest run have fixed the dodgy AF..then get one..other than that it was a great body

so what your saying is..only post if your pro Pentax K5 and dont give the op any other opinion other than a K5 is the better option...?....

and we have " sorry little Nikon worshipping asses" ...crikey mate you have got the pentax goggles on aint yer mate ...actually I was using my Nieces K7 last night { it was mine} and theres a lot to like about its small fit and quite shutter etc...if my K5s had not had all Af issues that I endured Id still have them...but when I see a post that expresses a need for advice on doing exactly the opposite of what I did..then Im gonna give a opinion...good or bad...so get down off the pentax soapbox..and go look through the countless threads in the K5 forum that show front focus issues, floppy mirriors, buttons falling off etc etc ..the K5 was a great camera..marred by crap QC

why am I still on a pentax forum.. mainly because Im still subscribed to a few threads that I posted in and Im still interested in what Pentax has to offer

Norm ..you crack me up mate, seriously

..the Op stated that he was thinking of stepping out from a D300s to a K5..what better advice is there from people that have had both..you on he other hand have had neither but seem to get your back up when people that have had both, seem to think that the D300s is a better option than a K5....we aint pentax bashers...just saying what our experiences are pure and simple....we are first and foremost photographers..to be honest I couldnt give a rats what brand I use..as long as it suits my needs and works as advertised..

if you feel that a k5 is better because it can render a complete balls up of a image to be usable then I fail to see your logic...while its a good trick..a far better one would be Af that actually works with all lenses below EV2....something that's never been fully resolved in the K5... a misfocused image that has incredible DR and great resolution..is still a worthless misfocused image

I've owned both the k5 and now a D300s..the K5 was a better camera in some regards.the D300s in others..in particular Low light AF..something the K5 still struggles with ...if you want quality primes in a lightweight system and shoot in well lit situations..then the K5 is a winner..if you want a more complete system with very high quality lenses of all focal lengths ,{ albeit expensive}.and AF that is good in all environments then Nikon is the way to go .

my main issues with Pentax were lack of a complete lens line up..with a total dependence on third party lenses at over 150mm at F2.8 and inconsistent Af ..Id really rethink your plans..perhaps look at a nikon 5100..same sensor as the K5/d7000 and a lot cheaper and smaller....also look at the lenses you want to aspire to....if pentax fills your desires..then go for it ...but nikon glass is about the best it gets ...
