Troglodyte de Caroline / Carolina Wren [Troglodytes ludovicianus]
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, 2021.02.08
=====
This troglo was around since the beginning of the winter. He feeds on suet I make and at night he hides under the patio.
At first he wasn't alone, he had a friend, but the latter haven't been seen for a while.
When the sun is from south-west, he come to the to of our dark BBQ and enjoy the heat.
That's when I was able to capture this photo, through our old double kitchen window.
He's so pretty!
Taken with the Pentax K-3ii + smc Pentax-DA* 60-250mm F4 ED [IF] SDM @ 250mm
1/500, ƒ/4 (wide-open), ISO 125
I love that lens! It's so sharp! Troglodyte de Caroline / Carolina Wren [Troglodytes ludovicianus]

I am cheating a bit to post here, but let's say with the crop sensor I meet the requirements to post...

very very nice!
I am always astonished of the photos you can get from that aps-c lens on the K-1. Do you use crop mode on the K-1 when using that lens ?

Thanks swip!
no that one was shot using a tripod... I have harder times to get sharp shots with the k-3ii than with the K-1...
with the K-3ii, it gets to theorical 750mm, and I guess that's why it's more challenging.
also photo was cropped a bit (1:3) fyi

Hope you see one one of these days... that was a lifer for me!
And yes, getting used with the Siggy... you need to be very disciplined with the handling technique... quite similar to the FA*250-600, but less weight to carry. I was especially testing this combo on a monopod.

Yes I would be in favor as well... they eat so many fish per day, and they are getting more numerous over the years...
There could be a couple still around in some open water areas of the Richelieu RIver, but there is nothing like that around the place I shoot that photo, I'd say the closest spot is maybe 5-10km away... so this individual has nothing to do in that area at this time of the year !

Cormoran à aigrettes / Double-Crested Cormorant [Phalacrocorax auritus]
2021.02.21
Saint-Georges-de-Clarenceville, Quebec
Viewed from a distance, I thought it was a dark plastic bag hanging at the top of a tree.
Well, no it isn't! This is a Double-Crested Cormorant the neck stuck between 2 branches, hanging 10 meters above the creek.
WTH is it doing there?
Was it left there by a bird of prey?
An accident of nature?
It's more strange due to the fact this should have happened during the winter, where cormorants are normally down in the south in our latitudes...
Anyways, never seen that before, and nobody seems to understand this unusual situation. Cormoran à aigrettes / Double-Crested Cormorant [Phalacrocorax auritus]

1/800, ƒ/5.0, ISO 800
