This is a first look at the K-1 of a german people photographer. He knows the 645Z, but not the smaller Pentax bodies. At the end you can see some results:

He is very happy with the K-1.

In Germany we (atleast in my case) have problems of availability as well. Iīm still waiting for my preorder. Demand seems to be extremely high.
That is a good sign, but i donīt want to wait much longer. I need my new toy!

K-1 associated costs..... what are you also getting?

I got the 24-70 F2.8, and two big filters to match the breast. Lensewise my collection should e good for the start. The 15-30 looks nice, but it is really expensive and can wait. Other than that I'll need a new harddrive soon.

Poll: Have you pre ordered?

Had my preorder cancelled. Not because i wonīt buy the K-1, but because it is very foreseeable that i will be in holiday when the camera comes out.
I donīt want 2000€ of worth lay around a strangers house or be shipped back. Sounds a bit harsh, but i have had my fair share of problems.
On the other hand the shop i preordered would have charged some money for a last minute cancelling.
Iīll check my local stores a day before my holiday. With luck iīll get it there, otherwise my K-3 will serve me well and iīll get the K-1 later. But i hope it will arrive in time. *fingers crossed*

OK, looks like the K-1 will arrive during my holidays and not before. Itīs a bit of a bummer, but if they need a bit more time to fix the last issues iīm fine with it. The K-3 will serve me well as always.

First lens for my first FF camera, on a somewhat "tight" budget.

Normally with a tight budget i would suggest to wait a bit until we know how the different DA lenses perform on the K-1, but with your preorder out, it is a bit harder. The new kit zoom seems to be good performer and it is WR that might be of importance.
With you saying you shoot everything only one prime might be to restrictive. I would start with an all purpose zoom and get might prefered primes one at a time. (after checking the testing of all the DA Primes. A lot seem to work fine with FA on paper)
I think more information for the new FA primes will be shown at Photokina in September.

Best wide angle lens for K-1?

Oh, my bad, i jumped a line and got the wrong information. Damn! OK, now i need a wide angle as well. :D I think iīll get the 24-70 with the K-1 and that should do for the start if i need FF resolution. Otherwise i can use the 15 in crop or normal and crop later.

I'll try my 15mm limited. It is listed as functioning on FF stopped down a bit. Otherwise the FA 15-30mm is tempting. (The Tamron is a beast) But it is to expensive at launch.

Iīm in the same boat. I just try to convince myself that there are rational reasons to get one asap.
For the moment i cannot preorder it in Germany and i will wait a bit to search for a bundle i might like. (body + Fa 24-70 would be good)

Why you will buy the K-1?

I think i will sell one of my K-3 bodies and two lenses i donīt use very often and get a K-1.
I was thinking of getting a FF for some time now, but buying into another system is a big step for me and i love my Pentax gear.
I need something rugged for traveling and hiking as well. Iīm a big guy so weight is of secondary importance for me.
In recent time i did more portrait work and will soon start to make some small amounts of money with it. That is a good excuse to commit even more to my hobby. :)
Working at a museum as an event manager it should help photographing in the bad lighting conditions during our events.
Good glass is on its way and i have some glass that i can use with FF at hand.
The real question for me is which setup i will buy. I want some kind of standard zoom for traveling and i think i will get the body only with the 24-70 FA instead of getting the kit lense, but i hope we will get some insight for these lenses in the next weeks. The 15-30mm is tempting but quite expensive at release. I think i will wait for a better street price.
I had hoped for some decent video just for some small travel films, but i will find another solution for that. Perhaps iīll get a decent action cam.

Overall iīm really happy with the K-1. I seems to fit my needs. It lacks in some areas i donīt need very often (burst, video, wide spread AF points,...), but i can understand that these missing features might hurt Ricoh/Pentax in atracting new customers.
Iīm not sure when to get it. I will go for some beautiful week long hike at the end of april beginning of may and would love to go with the K-1, on the other hand waiting for autumn might et the prices down a bit and i could get one right before my trip to France.
Questions over questions.

annoying work with2nd curtain flash

That is weird. I have no problem with it in manual. As Oldbayrunner said shutter speed has to be 1/90 or slower, but even if your shutter is faster when activating flash it switches to 1/90. (just tried it)

You could try White Wall. Everytime i ask for a good printing solution i get them recommended. But i havenīt used them personally. You can get some really huge prints, but they are pricey of course. (180x120cm)

K-3 flash

I had a similar problem (flash always firing, couldnīt go faster than 1/180 in any mode), gave it to my pentax service point and got it back a few days later. "we couldnīt find anything wrong with your camera, but gave it a sensor cleaning. Have fun" After that everything was working fine. Very mysteríous. One thing they said was that sometimes the inner workings can be disturbed when you connect some peripherals after the camera is already working. He advised me to always connect and turn on every peripheral before starting the camera. That would be weird, but i try to do it this way now and i had no problems since.

I donīt think super stylish shots work a lot better, because they could alienate users. But it must be possible to go to some more or less interesting place to take a few pictures. It wouldnīt be much work.
As it is it seems lazy and i would appreciate more excitement shown by the producers of a product iīm really interested in.
Anyway itīs under a month now till CP+. Then will be the time to pull the big guns.

When looking over some other nonpentax based websites and forums the Pentax FF gets a lot of flack because of the poor quality, uninspired, low resolution pictures that are beeing used in the preview articles. Do you think this might weaken the Pentax marketing? I am myself very underwhelmed by the pictures. I think they are boring as hell and donīt give any valuable information. As a Pentax user i read the articles and use the informations more than the pictures, but it might hurt the first impressions for people that click on some link in an article and get a very underwhelming first impression.

Iīm working at a museum and from time to time i try to get pictures of the items within the showcases. To get clean images i use a simple trick.
To avoid reflections and other distractions put the front of your lens flat on the glas of the showcase. You might have to use a wider lens, but that is fine.
This way you stabilize your lens as well and can drop your iso greatly by using longer shutterspeeds.

Beware of the house rules! And donīt use this technique with pressure sensitive showcases. If you can see lots of smeary children fingerprints on the bottom of the glas you should be fine. :)

This shot was taken through the showcase by pressing the front of the camera onto the glas in a dark museum room.

Torrential rainfall tested the limits of the weather sealing on my K-3 II

I got into a thunderstorm in Scotland and my K-3 went nuts the next day. In these uncertain conditions i went with the 18-135 WR and the 55-300 WR, turned out to be a good idea.
The next day i bought a sack of rice and put my camera in it for a day. After that there was still a misfunction with my onboard flash (it always fired and i could get faster than 1/180 with my shutter), but it kept going and i got some nice pictures out of the rest of the tour. Later the flash malfuznction was easily fixed by my Pentax service point back home.
The Pentax Cameras are really strong in bad conditions, but of course they have their limits.

This was taken on a morning walk trough our local moor. It was a very atmospheric and misty mood.
It was taken with the 18-135mm kit lense, at 68mm, F16, Iso100 and 1/1250 sec.
I wasnīt alone so i had to shoot what i got, but iīm pretty happy with the mood of the pic.

I think it is very important für Ricoh to make the big announcement before the holiday season starts. If it is still obscure a lot of people might get another new toy and abandon Pentax Ricoh.

Scotland in May - Where to go?

Iīm back und will go through my pictures soon.
The weather was pretty bad. (even the people there said it was one of the worst springs for years)
Thank you all for the many tips and recommendations.
But i did enjoy the trip. No Midgys - that was a plus.
Sadly my K-3 couldnīt handle the unstopping rain as good as me. I got some water leaking in and for some reason my camera thinks now that the flash is always activated. I cannot go over 1/180sec and the onboard flash fires. I could circumvent that by attaching my external flash and set it on hss mode, but that wasnīt very satisfying.
I didnīt take as much photos as i wanted, but i didnīt want to risk my camera as well. I will bring it to costumer service this week. Hopefully it wonīt be to expensive.
Now with my home pc to go through my pictures i will show some soon.
