Pentax 70 - 210 vs Tamron 70 - 210 | Lens Review

You're bursting my naivete bubble

Like I said I (with no experience in such things) *expected* a DFA* to have tighter tolerances and better QA, but I guess reality is different and they can be as unreliable as any lens... the experience of some people I've heard about that had expensive lenses basically fall apart in their hands seems to corroborate that.

That's it, NOW I have an excuse for not having star lenses

Ok, I have not watched the video -yet. I also own a copy of the new Pentax 70-210 and like bdery, so far the only negative I've observed is the bokeh, otherwise it's produced great results so far. However, whatever conclusions one might gain from the comparison above, what's the point? We don't have an option to use the Tamron on our K-mount, and whether or not there may have been QC problems with the test Pentax lens aside. I'm just not sure I need to be concerned about the performance of a lens I can't use.

Ok, ok, I can see this from a curiosity standpoint, not much else.

Because someone says it on the internet does not make it true...

I'm reviewing / testing the D FA 70-210 right now, and apart from bokeh which is a letdown, it's hard to find big flaws with that lens.

Thanks, swip. May be it was a good investment to spend some time (hours) of adjusting the AF of the camera(s) to the lens?

My first attempt at using my K-3II for video. Taken in April of 2019 with my HD DA 16-85mm lens. It shows the first takeoff of the B-17 Sentimental Journey at the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa, AZ, after an extended maintenance period.

I agree! It's a lovely aircraft. Here's a shot of Connie in flight. She did two passes down Sydney Harbour for the International Fleet Review in 2013.

PS I was told at HARS that at present, Connie is the only flying Super Constellation in the world.

When not to take a photo

Near where I live there was a huge queue outside the local CentreLink office (social security) which wound around the block. They were trying to honour the 2 metre social distancing rule which made it even longer. This was a scene which told a story. It's dramatic and historic. It evoked images of the 30s. The long line provided a range of compositional opportunities. I had my camera with me. Did I take a photo? No. I couldn't. These are people who've lost their jobs virtually overnight. They're people who live in my community who I would pass in the street every day or catch the bus with. I'm also lucky enough to have a job which allows me to work from home and have the confidence I'll still be paid next month, in six months or a year. What do real photojournalists do? This was a scene of overwhelming sadness. Why would I want to capture it? And it's only going to get worse.

M20/4 isn't the best lens for edge sharpness, but combined with how I commute to the locations to take the photos (ie. cycling), its the most perfect lens

Me and the boys ran out of corona beer so we're having a MIJ party instead.

On a serious note, I hadn't had an alcoholic drink since 4th Jan 2020, but finally thought that desperate times call to open a birthday present :)

I haven't yet run into the long MFD issue, nor have I tried the included close-up adapter lens for it. I did have to correct for a fair amount of CA and PF in PP. Of the photos I've posted so far, the only one I feel I really "nailed" was the close-up of the green heron. Many of my shots had slight focusing errors, or shake, or subject movement. Not really a good job by me in charging into the fray with a lens I barely knew - in my experience it can take months to really learn a new long tele lens.

I do have the Tamron SP 200-500/5.6, and at some point I'll make a quick and boring comparison. My current impression is the Tamron is a bit sharper, and like you I enjoy the fact that it has a short MFD. I've recently acquired a better tripod and a long lens plate, so am now better equipped to compare the two lenses.

Using the K 135-600 for a couple of hours left me pretty sore, too, and I didn't even hand-hold the lens. It's pretty unwieldy on a monopod, plus having to fight the gusty wind and squat down at odd angles to photograph through/around the brush was uncomfortable.

I barely had a chance to test the lens when I impulsively decided to lug it to one of my favorite hangouts - a local pond. I had the lens + K-3 II mounted on a monopod, which felt not entirely sufficient to wield the lens optimally. Couple my tenuous setup with a blustery afternoon and, well, it was a bit of a struggle. I had hoped to photograph a great blue heron who was a frequent visitor to the pond, but to my surprise I was treated to the arrival of a family of green herons.

cropped away about 2/3 of the frame

cropped about 1/2 of the frame

All of these shots were taken at 600mm, f/8 - f/11.

99.99% of my shots are hand held.... I'll not think twice about a half day walk through the bush with it on a sling strap etc.... hung off the camera or the lens foot.... I'm almost 60.... landscapes or bees... walking for 4 hours with a tripod.... no thanks!

Generally, I'll only use a tripod where I might be waiting for something to happen in a particular spot.... like focussed on a well lit flower and waiting for a bird to feed on it.... could take an hour or so.

2MP crop from a K1.... 1/18 of the sensor.

Busy Bee at the Goolwa Community Garden by Noel Leahy, on Flickr

Generally.... when just bushwalking I take a small 20mm and a 43 and find that I don't look for other lenses.... I use a Voightlander color scopar 20mm.... both fit in a pocket.... I twist the camera off the 150-450 leaving it dangle on the sling then shoot with the 20/43.
