The pricing of camera gear across formats, brands and continents is extremely confusing at the moment. Trying to figure out if a lens is priced correctly is near impossible.

Indeed not surprising. When I break down the costs of things I purchase, things that I could assemble myself by purchasing components, I realize that most business operate in general with 50% gross margins. If Tamron makes that lens and supply it to Ricoh, and Ricoh is commercially responsible for the inventory, the selling, and the after sales repairs, why should Tamron drop their price to allow Ricoh to make money and if not , why should Ricoh sell the lens for 0% margin? And it's always a problem for the ratios in management accounting if you buy a product externally and resell it directly when the ratio of the outsourced product is compared to the ratios of product manufactured in house.

I tried the new Pentax 70-210 today on a K-1 II and was pretty impressed with it. Despite being quite long, it is so light that it doesn't make the setup feel front-heavy. From the photos it looked quite big, but feels quite compact in reality. The finish feels like other Pentax lenses, but it feels less dense than some other recent Pentax FF lenses. Clearly this lightness is a design objective, but if you equate weight with quality, you might say it feels more plasticky. The focusing was quick and quiet. There is no extension of the outside of the lens during focusing or zooming. The lens is made in Vietnam and the hood in the Philippines. I've noticed that some other brands have been using tricky phrasing to imply that their lenses are made in Japan when they are not - putting "Designed in Japan" or "Tokina Japan" somewhere else on the barrel. I'm glad Ricoh isn't doing that. I think it's disrespectful of the efforts of the workers in those countries where the product is actually made.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned on an earlier page, but there are a lot of images of the lens in this report from Yaotomi Camera.
???????? HD PENTAX-D FA 70-210mmF4ED SDM WR ?????? - ??????????by????????

Right now I don't have a KAF4 camera. When I upgrade, a new telezoom may be on my shopping list. I was thinking about the 55-300 PLM, but now I think I would rather have the 70-210/4 even without any intention to move to full frame. I just feel that at the long end the 70-200/4 makes subject isolation more attainable and it would be worth the extra cost and weight.

Even if the f/4 and f/2.8 were the same price, many would prefer the former because of weight and size. The price of oranges is not relevant if you want an apple.

Not at all. There are many people who value having the smaller size (under 800 grams) that an f4 lens with this focal length will bring to the table. I own the 70-200 f2.8 and it is a nice lens, but it is big. Having a 70-200 f4 with fast DC auto focus, weather sealing, and ends up with a street price of 900 to 950 USD is something that brings value to the brand.

Obviously this should not be the only lens that Pentax releases, but I think it should sell well and generate revenue -- probably quite a bit more than the wide angle prime that I am looking for.

Honestly, zooms sell better than primes and while we all like to talk about primes that "we need," most photography is done with zooms. In that respect, Pentax is pretty set. They should probably come out with a 24-70 f4 and a 70-300 variable aperture lens too, but most of the bread and butter zooms are already there.

Pentax was so popular in the US and some other countries back then. Was Pentax ever absent in photography that the younger generation don't even l know they exited? Sorry I went out of photography in 1993 and only went back in 2008. That's about 13 years. How can they be so easily forgotten?

I see that being used maybe twice before giving up. First you fiddle with the Wifi to try to get it to connect to the phone, then you have this contraption holding your smartphone on top of the camera when the phone is almost as wide and tall as the camera itself. Maybe you'd go through that trouble for certain tripod-friendly applications. But that's the polar opposite of a compact, simple, easy-to-carry rig.

In car analogies, it's someone buying a slick new Toyota Supra and then putting a hitch and a cooler/luggage carrier on the back with a week's worth of stuff bungee corded to it.

God forbid someone use the same camera to take landscapes on their vacation to the Alps, and to take photos of their kids' soccer team, too.

Why won't it be in the league of the Canon? Because it's not a star lens? The DFA 150-450 is very much in the league of the Canon 100-400 L, but the DFA zoom is not a star lens either. Don't be fooled by the fact that the DFA 70-200/4 won't be a star lens. That doesn't mean it won't be as good as the Nikon, Canon and Sony versions. And it will likely be priced accordingly.

If you're looking for a cheaper DFA telephoto zoom, hold off for the DFA 70-300, which I would guess will be priced somewhere between $600 and $800.

Given that DA*60-250 will still be available. AND if this new lens will be lighter and faster focusing, it will be a good alternative. If it will be 1300€ new, launch prize it should be fine :) there will always be many who will wait and many who will just buy it.

I have quite similar option. But when traveling in to a bigger city, I usually take that opportunity to try them out. If I have time. That said I’v bought my K-1 from web(but it was small company in Finland, and I kind a knew what I was buying..) But basically that is main thing what make these bloggers so famous, because people buy from internet and want to hear first hand info from ’reliable source’.

Let's not take a giant jump forward into an abyss of no knowledge. A problem with how Pentax is handling this is that for the next few months we'll be making, or not making, decisions based on ignorance. As a retired engineer, I enjoy thinking about alternatives, but I refuse to spend money under the current circumstances ...... if every one is like me, they're going to have a shortage of income until they tell us more. We don't know that they are abandoning APS. We don't know that they are going to embrace MILC {from what has been said here before, that could easily drive many of their 'big spenders'} away. From the way @Adam; responded to my comment about the interview {#1669 above}, I feel that I know less today than I knew yesterday.

Of course, Pentax could be the first to have a aps-c, mirrorless with a great adapter for legacy glass or keep the existing mount and make it longer. If not, it looks like Fuji is the only innovator left in aps, with the possibility that Canon, Sony and Nikon will update their line up, but probably not their lens selection. However, as many of us forum members agree, mirrorless cameras is not a top priority. I do feel sorry for many of us that have went for large numbers of aps-c Pentax mount lenses thinking that Pentax would always support us with new and better camera models and updated and new lenses. Many have had to put with with subpar autofocus motors/systems that created major, additional operation expenses - though fortunately not for me. Going forward - at least for me- it will be hard to justify the likely high acquisition cost of new Pentax aps glass listed on the timeline without first seeing something besides the KP available for purchase. Of course, if Sony, or someone else, had a revolutionary new and better sensor out or near production in aps size, that would also be most helpful to move things forward for all...

P.S. forgot about the Canon M series and their adapter for EF lenses - my mistake.

Wild rumour: Samsung to provide APS-C sensors to Ricoh Imaging (and Fujifilm)

It's all untestable theory at the moment. Ricoh bought Pentax when they already had a camera division. Samsung has tremendous digital presence based on their Televisions and monitors. If they've developed some industry leading tech on par with what others have done, who are they going to sell too besides Pentax? Nikon is already seriously suffering because they exist on the crumbs Sony throws them. The market is ripe for a new player. Samsung, without a serious APS-c player would be exactly the type of company to chose Pentax to get their foot in the door.

And if Pentax could get superior tech and could actually get new tech out before Sony does, that's the only way they gain market share. Sony's "Nikon gets new tech a year after Sony's camera division does and Pentax gets it a year after Nikon does" model is really bad for Pentax. I'm sure Pentax is squirming to get out from under Sony's thumb.

Photokina, Ricoh has Confirmed

Well since there are only 3 DSLR makers and a direct competition means basically other high-end APSC DSLRs, to be "one of the best" can also mean 3rd, i.e. the worst. :D Not to mention the K-3 wasn´t an improvement in all aspects (for example it was an actual downgrade as regards the sensor, it´s dynamic range and low light ISO).

Nobody argues that the K-3 II is a great camera capable of producing stunning pictures, but the same can be said about the K-5 IIs or the older K-5. It is not about a camera suddenly loosing the capability of taking pictures, it´s about innovation and progress (and of course revenues). The thing is, the competition has moved on, while Pentax is staying still. The K-3 II was introduced in 2015, when there was e.g. Nikon D7200 (itself a stunning camera) or Canon 70D. Since that time Canon came up with D80 and Nikon with D7500 and D500, and the D80 is rumoured to get a successor soon (at Photokina?). So during the time the competition introduces 2 new cameras Pentaxians still have to make do with a 2015 model. And this model is already discontinued.

What is more, it is not only the users who suffer, but also Ricoh suffers since it looses possible revenues (in 2 ways: not having a new product for sale, and also by loosing customers that couldnt wait and switched to other brands). Yes, we can still use the K-3 for great pictures, but this is not the way to survive in the competing market.

I have heard very similar notions on music production forums. It isn't the tools it's the artist (that matters). After years and years of making due with freeware and low cost products, and being frustrated with the outcome, I discovered this type of thinking to be... nonsense. Once I got into commercial products, my art improved several times over easily. Because the commercial products were designed with features that aided commercial production. Sure, if you don't know how to use the gear, it doesn't matter what you use... ones output will likely still be poor (relatively speaking).

But if you do know what you're doing, the better gear will improve your workflow and output. I know this first hand and I wish I hadn't listened to people spouting what you're spouting here as I did for so long, because it damaged my work for very long. While it is true the artist's vision and abilities do indeed matter, the tools significantly matter too.

On the photo side, everytime I've upgraded gear, my output has improved as well. New gear with new abilities give me new opportunities as well as the ability to capture what I could already even easier.

We should be collectively pushing Ricoh to give us higher competitive products. Yet it seems more often we've resorted to shaming and dismissing the dissenting views here on the forum and apologizing for the weakness in the product lineup. While I can understand reading those can be tiresome, those that rage against them are not helping either..

In that Pentax needs to continue to improve its AF module. That said, I do notice a difference in tracking improvements and accuracy between the K3 and K3II. But I think what I'm reading from you is, that you'd like to have near high level Canon/Nikon tracking/accuracy. AF modules, must not be cheap or easy to improve. :)

A true successor to the K-1 (instead of just a minor update) The K-1 is already at a pretty low price point. It leaves little room for a cheaper model. Two camera's with one at the K-1 price point and one more like $3000+ aiming for the D850. Only possible when Ricoh gets a handle on autofocus. It must be as good as the D850's. The camera at the K-1 (II) price point around $2000 will have to compete with the likes of Sony A7 III and Nikon Z6 en Nikon D750. So a 24mp sensor and a lot faster. 8fps at least and the same excellent AF. They can share the same body, which would make development a lot cheaper.

It’s hard to deduce much, if anything, about specific intentions for Pentax within Ricoh’s recovery and growth strategy. While they’re now into their growth phase, having slashed the North American direct sales force, ditched Ricoh India and taken a massive write-down hit, there’s still some scepticism that their main revenue source, the printer business, can hold up until 2023, as they plan.

Stereo cameras for distance measurement and the Theta camera are notable in their “Edge” systems unit, but that’s related to business and industry systems peripherals, which don’t directly involve stand-alone cameras. The best chance for the Pentax brand is probably to move ahead with more products during the near term, as profitablility of the group rises, although much of that is already earmarked for mergers and acquisitions.

They could sell the brand to their nearest rival Fuji-Xerox, to complement that company’s mirrorless camera strategy, but without a discernable growth path for Pentax I’d doubt a sale to anyone is viable, and I reckon our expectations for Photokina 2018 have probably been dampened enough, already. Of course, we could be pleasantly surprised, too. Hope for the best, and expect the worst, as my father was fond of saying.
