Didn't sleep too well, awoke early and was greeted with this view of the Loch... makes me wonder what else I must miss on other mornings.

We had some big winds on the mountain the other day. It was clear and sunny but the leeward side of the mountain was getting hammered with drifting snow.

I saw this impending scene and thought this... :)

So, just let me be, beside the seaside

I'll be beside, myself with glee

Looking down the paved pathway taking you up the incredibly steep hillsides in the Paúl valley on Santo Antão, Cape Verde.

Paved pathway by -savoche-, on Flickr

Some sweaty climbing later we had passed through some clouds. Vale do Paúl is probably the place I've been that feels the most like a huge film set - it simply doesn't look real. We expected to see a hobbit walking by any moment. It's also one of the most beautiful places I've visited - and the people there are the definition of freindliness and helpfulness. It's a bit cumbersome to get there, though. We had to go via Lisbon to the island of Sal, then take a domestic flight to Sáo Vicente, then on by ferry to Santo Antão. Still, we do want to go back :)

Equipment really doesn't matter. I was a former IPSC shooter. I remember that one of my friends joined a shooting competition in Manila. He used a .45 1911 Norinco and he ended up in the top 5 shooters along the Philippine shooting team. One of the top shooters asked what gun was he using. He showed his Norinco and the shooter looked at him with confusion and said, "No, this is a Colt .45 pistol. You just labeled it Norinco." People are so brand conscious that times they think having a leading brand will improve their skills. Maybe it will give them some advantages but, if you're good, you're good. If not they shouldn't trample on somebody else's gear. After all what's the use of having the best camera if you're a lousy photographer.

HD DA 40mm F2.8 Ltd with Pentax K70. I do like this lens, though I keep thinking I'll accidentally lose the lens cap as it is so tiny.

I try not to think about the 100mm WR Macro anymore. It's painful to remember how good it was, and that I definitely couldn't afford to get another one now! The simplicity of the manual focus override mechanism is just brilliant. Here's a few shots from last year I ran into while reminiscing.

We seem to have survived OK without that for the last 20+ years, but folks do have long memories!
