Yeah, that's what I'm saying, Dave, the difference is they weren't just tolerating each other! I remember as an 'eighth grade' student, asking my mum to drop me off at school from around the corner. If a goodbye kiss had been witnessed, there would've been no end to the ribbing from my mates! :D

Thanks, FMF, I didn't realize it was eight years in a row for Melbourne, and still number two.

My wife and I loved Munich and thought it was one of the places in the world we'd like to live if not for where we are now.

American teenagers would be nuts not to go as exchange students there, the legal drinking age is sixteen! :)

I'm being facetious, but what was genuinely touching was the sight of a grandfather and grandson drinking wheat beer together in the English Garden, and it was clearly a normal thing, not an obligation on the part of either. This is a culture where generations genuinely get on and like each other. It's not like Australian/UK/US society where it can be considered uncool for a sixteen year old to spend a day or evening enjoying the company of old folk - social suicide! :D

What an exciting time for you! I've done lots of Linux over the years, especially early on, but I only use it and deal with it on servers these days. I manage three of them, web proxies, at work.

Windows certainly uses the terminal. Powershell has revolutionized Windows sysadmin in the last decade. So much so that when you install Windows server (or ten thousand instances of them at the same time) you're asked if you need to bother with the GUI or not. If it's just part of a cluster, it might as well be the 'Core' installation, forget the graphics. :)

More than 100! Supposedly some of the Coney Island designers were involved back in 1912. I took this with the Sigma 12-24mm on the K-1. That's a guy from the same walkabout photoshoot in the foreground, nice bloke, but can't remember his name.

Yep, I quite like the suburb of Bondi. Despite being an eastern suburb, it's not reached the status yet of some of the others and it's a bit like St Kilda in my home city of Melbourne, a bit bohemian still, and has (or had) its share of international backpackers.

Median house price in Manly is (or was!) just under $3 million.

True. It's sort of hard to believe the job that pancake manages to do on the K-1.

A legacy of its heritage as the M40 f2.8 on film.

Hope you'll have room in that bedroom for another bed ... at some point in time (who knows what the camera market, or indeed world economy will look like?) ... there will be a 35mm f1.4 or whatever sibling. :)

(Laughs) It's a Haves versus Have Nots thing, right? :)

We may not have as much social inequality as a lot of other countries, but it's there, alright.

You'd know, you spent extended time here, IIRC!

I agree. The 77 is wonderful for its size.

But this thing will be big, there's a huge amount of corrective glass in there.

The DFA*50 f1.4 and the FA50 f1.4 are simply different beasts in optical performance.

A photojournalist is fearless in their coverage, Officiousbystander, there will be confrontations in getting the pics that nail zeitgeist, it's why the good ones deserve all our admiration.

It's mysterious. In Australia, we had to close Bondi Beach because Sydneysiders now stood down from work went there and gathered for a day in the sand and the surf!

Message hadn't got through. :(

I guess she'll be easy to isolate. Elsewhere in the world, Covid-19 carriers are walking around.

I think it was Singapore that have forced those diagnosed to install an app on their phone so they can be tracked for 14 days. That phone shouldn't ever be traced in a shopping mall or a workplace or whatever.

The problem is, Thor, it would still be you shooting the Nikon/Fuji/Sony, if you get what I mean. Action photography is not easy. :D

The advantage of the data I've shown you is that it is standardized testing.

All those mistakes you mentioned happened to the shooters around me too, of all brands. I have seen American photographer Cory Rich preset manual focus for skateboarders with his Nikon D5, because he knew the system was not capable.

If the kids are blurry but the background is sharp as you mentioned, you've let the focus point fall on the background. This occurs frequently when you're panning and the subject slows down or changes direction. Unless you crank up your Hold setting in the menu to compensate for the error, what else is the camera supposed to do when it finds a nice tree or fence underneath its focus point? G.I.G.O! :) By the time you've laid it back on the target edge or line, it now has to rack in from maybe hundreds of metres away, it may never catch up before the action's passed.

The other is where you make the mistake of focusing on a kid.

That's right, focusing on a kid.

The camera can't do that.

A PDAF focus system - including Sony, Canon and Nikon - attempts to focus on a line under a focus point.

If underneath the focus point there is just a blob of colour, like a sports uniform, it can't act.

So in the top photograph of yours, I like the writing on the shirt of the player with the ball - that's ideal PDAF material.

In the second photograph, it would be a mistake to train the point on the red shirt, I'd be aiming for the edge between the bottom of the shirt and the black shorts, and panning with that. You're going to have to shoot a little wider, because you'll need to crop the result to be properly composed, but it's more important to get the focus right or the result will be a throwaway.

Here's a pic I took the other weekend, that horse is coming at me at probably 60kmh in the z-direction, the hardest for any autofocus system to deal with, and I'm shooting at the narrowest depth of field:

Of course. But if you can't get close to the subject, if the wall behind is much closer to them than your camera is, an expensive wide aperture lens won't do what you want it to do. :)

Much of the depth of field, up to 2/3 of it according to circumstances, is behind the focal plane.

Choosing a shooting position is so important when arriving at a venue!

The Joke Thread

An old, blind cowboy wanders into a bar. He finds his way to a stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender: "Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?"

The bar immediately falls absolutely silent.

The woman next to him says: "Before you tell that joke, cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things:

1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat.
2. The bouncer is a blonde girl.
3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate.
4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter.
5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler.

Now, think about it seriously, cowboy - do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?"

The cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters:
"No, not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."

US Ricoh Imaging ambassador Chris Knight has a great instructional text out called The Dramatic Portrait: The Art of Crafting Light and Shadow.

The 645Z is used for pretty much everything.

I won't link to it, that would become a plug, so Google/Amazon Kindle if you like.

I missed David Byrne in Melbourne last year, I suppose his routine for Once In A Lifetime would've been similar to his appearance on last week's episode of SNL:
