What are your DSLR dealbreakers?

I guess the deal breakers for me are the features that I have come to cherish with my Pentax DSLR cameras:

Excellent ergonomics
Buttons instead of menus for white balance, iso, and exposure compensation
LCD on top
Front and rear dials
Image replay zoom using a dial, not an inconveniently placed button
Excellent dynamic range
Accessories that can be used on multiple models, i.e. cable releases, IR remotes, batteries
SD card option

In this age of social (really?) media, instant outrage is more and more becoming the norm. It's almost as if some people think in hash tags #!!!#. People go from zero to outraged in 60 seconds or less. Sometimes I wonder if many people aren't just overstimulated by all the news, noise, and visual stimuli we are bombarded with every day. Photography has always been a way for me to calm my mind and be more observant of the world around me. I'm a social worker by profession. There are a lot of people walking around with undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues. Not engaging and walking away is probably the safest strategy.

Affordable arca-compatible ball head

I have the Sirui G-20KX. It is a sturdy ball head with nobs for adjusting tension and one for controlling the ball itself. Haven't had any problems with it loosening during use. One suggestion I would make is to look on the KEH website. You may be able to get a great used ball head of higher quality. I would also suggest looking on your local Craigslist under photography in the for sale section. KEH items come with a warranty which can be reassuring, but you will pay a bit more for the item.

Just saw your post here. Welcome to the forum! The FA 50mm will be on its way to you in the morning. As you can probably tell from the response to this listing, this is a very caring community and a very talented one as well.

Just an update on our pup Cody. He is doing much better. He is on a bland diet while his system recovers from the medication he was on, but he seems to be bouncing back. There will likely be many more squirrel chasing opportunities in his future. I won't gripe about his incessant barking at them again any time soon. It was just too quiet while he was sick. I miss my camera and lenses, but I sure would miss him a heck of a lot more. Thank you again to everyone who purchased gear listed here.

Thank you again for everyone's positive thoughts and kind words. We haven't been able to resolve the fever, but he is still eating and drinking, so we have hope. He goes back to the vet on Monday. Thank you to everyone who has purchased equipment.

Pre-emptive seller's remorse

I guess one question would be how many more years of pleasure and satisfaction (creative) could you get out of the kit? The value of the equipment amortized over those years might be a different proposition. How much is nurturing your creativity worth to you? Yes, itís a professional grade camera. There are plenty of amateurs with talent equal to a professional who choose not to make money from their photos. The camera could care less who is behind the viewfinder. Reasons to sell it might be a need to redeploy the funds, switch to a different system, etc. Not thinking one is worthy/deserving of the privilege of using such a wonderful tool when one can afford it, less so. My two cents. I had to sell my Z and lenses a while back. Missed them greatly. Was recently able to replace them. For me itís a lifetime investment in joy.

Thank you everyone for your understanding and kind thoughts. I've included a picture of our terrier terrors. The gray Cairn, Cody, is the one who is ill right now.

The KP and the DFA 100mm WR macro have been sold. I will consider offering a discount is more than one item is bought at the same time.

So much angst about new equipment or no new equipment to come. Everyone got a working camera and a favorite lens or two? If so, energy and funds might be better spent taking a trip somewhere close by, or far away, and snapping away. Inspiration and lighting are 3/4 of any good photo. The other 1/4 is maybe the gear itself. Other than professionals dependent on the gear for their livelihoods, wants may outdistance needs. GAS can overrun creativity leaving photographic roadkill in its wake.

I did and really missed it. I had a one time financial windfall and decided to replace it. I just love the 645Z. I've worked out a way to handle the weight issue. I now have a collapsible jogging pet stroller that holds my doctor style camera bag with my MF gear. The wheels are strong enough that I can take it on uneven ground on long walks without having to carry the weight of the MF camera, lenses and tripod. Being just shy of 60 years old and 5'1" it makes all the difference:-)

Why Do YOU Stay With Pentax?

I've actually not left Pentax. I currently have a KP, K-1, and 645Z. I won't be leaving because of Pentax lenses. Even if Pentax announced it was ceasing operations tomorrow, I would be on the look out for used bodies for spare parts and adapters to use my lenses with other bodies if it came to that. I love the FA Limited's and the F* primes. It will take me many years to grow into the equipment I have. There will be newer, better equipment made, but I doubt any of it will make me a better photographer. More likely just a broke one.

Precision quotes an initial $800 estimate to look at a 645Z for repair, so factor that in if you are considering buying used without a warranty. I bought and returned a couple of them with shutter issues, which is how I learned about the initial repair estimate. I would only buy a used one with a warranty unless it was under $3700 and had a low shutter count.

New 645z in 2018?

The K-1 has a cropped option. Couldn't a full frame 645Z body have a crop mode as well? If they went with the 100 megapixel sensor, even cropped, it would still have great image quality and existing 645 DA lenses could still be used.

No more cheap Pentax camera ...

I think the value in a Pentax camera at that price point is that it will be a high quality product with features that the average Joe can grow into over time without feeling a need to upgrade. Smart Phones can be expensive too. Witness the iPhone X. Fortunately, Pentax doesn't throttle the performance of its products to get owners to upgrade. Batteries for Pentax cameras are a lot cheaper too and we can replace them ourselves :-)

When I was shopping for a roadster I test drove the Mini roadster. Gimmicky awkward little car. When I test drove the MX-5 I just started grinning. I knew it was going to be my car from that first drive. I still drive it locally on the weekends, but rarely to work anymore. I inherited the roadster gene, as I call it, from my dad. I've had older used Honda and Mercedes roadsters over the years. The MX-5 was my first new one. I'm going to be 59 years old next month. It wasn't my mid-life crisis car. It was my mid-life celebration car. Every time I drive it I think of my dad, who passed away in 1994, and say a silent thank you for passing along the roadster gene:-) My mom told me that when she married my dad he had a red MG roadster circa 1955, I think she said. Broke his heart to sell it when my older sister and I came along. I suspect it was part of the reason the marriage did not last lol

K1 vs 645z & Cost

Yes, I found it to be so, which negated the advantage of the smaller size/lighter weight. Though I ultimately wound up selling it for an unrelated reason, I will not buy another one when the funds become available again. I found I really, really, do not like EVFs and missed the ergonomics and viewfinder of the 645Z.

If The K-1 Didn't Exist...

Sounds pretty contemptuous of anyone who isn't a professional and buys a K-1. Aside from 36 MP, the dynamic range and SR are a gift especially to someone with a hereditary hand tremor. I probably will never print bigger than 19" x whatever print (its what my printer can accommodate) or look at my photos on anything bigger that a 27" 5K monitor. But it really just doesn't matter. When I look at my photos taken with the K-1, I smile and get a little teary. Nature and light are beautiful and the K-1 allows me to bring them home to experience again and again. I have had a K10D, a K7, a K5IIs and a K-3II over time. I have taken wonderful pictures with each of them at one time or another. But, the K-1 is special. If some Pentax lenses have pixie dust, the K-1 is the Pentax body that does as well. My thought is that we all should shoot with the kit that makes us smile when we see the results of our work. I don't think the good lord has a hierarchy in mind for experiencing joy. For some the K-1 is a work tool. For others not. Good thing for the Pentax brand that folks don't get shamed out of buying a K-1 because some folks feel that unless one is a professional he or she doesn't really need one. I have a medium format kit. If the K-1 did not exist, I might not have had the courage to give the format a try.
