I see what you mean about the pins.
I will go for the Nikon version or the 560 TX.
Thanks!

Help with beginner flash kit shopping list (Yongnuo)?

Think I've got this narrowed down but it's confusing what with all the different models etc.
I have a Pentax k-x and some old film cameras (and I want to pick up a 5D mk1 or 2).

The Yongnuo 560 III seems like a good place to start learning about flash and lighting. I don't think the IV offers me any more as a beginner.
Is there a specific variant of 560 III which I need to look for?

As I understand it, the RF-603 II triggers would be a good starting point and both the Canon & Nikon versions work so the Canon should be fine since I want that 5Dmk1.
And I'll have a spare transceiver that I can use with any old flash.
What I'm not sure about is if they'll work with my old film cameras?

The remote shutter trigger function will be useless on the k-x but that shouldn't matter because I have an infrared remote control, right?

Every time I see an articulated screen I think about it snapping off and wonder how much extra I would be paying for a useless feature. I don't see the appeal, I'd much rather have weather sealing. Some sort of VF might have been good though.

If you can't find one at the airport, Spectrum might be a good bet as there are plenty of other electronics shops on Tottenham Court road to try if they don't have one.
It's between Goodge Street and Warren Street tube stations - Tottenham Court Road station is a bit of a walk.

"He who pays the piper, calls the tune" as they say. I get that, but does he also tell the piper what brand of pipe to play? Do you tell your car mechanic what brand of wrench to use? Do you choose your photographer by whether he edits on Mac or PC? Tell your surgeon to use a number 3 or a number 5 scalpel?

It's your business but I just don't think you should stop using the equipment you enjoy most and feel gives you the right result because of one idiot who knows nothing about photography. As the professional, *you* know what gives the right results and it's *your expertise* they're paying for. Up to you but that's my 2 cents anyway.

I don't understand this. As a professional you can't stand by your tools and methods!? Why be ashamed?
Why can't you just grin and say 'Yeah they do make some cheesy consumer models don't they? This kit gives me the results I need for this job though and I'm all about delivering the results.'?

Fair enough, they weren't great suggestions anyway, I prefer "Black Friday" black.
Even I'm tempted by the price it's going for these day.

'Don't they make photocopiers or something?'

If you look at the camera finder by brand page on flickr, Pentax are languishing in 10th place whereas Ricoh are trailing down in 19th position after those camera makers Blackberry and Motorola!

I thought they just responded badly to the Marmite (love/hate) styling.
The Fuji X100 is pretty much the same size and was a runaway success.
I'd love a k-mount camera like this if it looked like a rangefinder or an MX and wasn't designed by Mark Newsom.
Personally I think the poor controversial design confused the issue massively.

Agfa Rodinal availability

Silverprint in London sell some Agfa branded stuff, I don't think there's any problem with availability.
As far as I remember, the naming is just a branding issue and Rodinal/R09/Adonal/Fomadon is all the same thing. I think it was that the patent has expired on the formula but the trademark 'Rodinal' is owned. Also, unopened it lasts a very long time (even opened it lasts well).
I'm not sure if Silverprint will ship chemicals back to the mainland, Maco.de are a good source though.

Is manual focus that big a disadvantage for action?

Thanks for all the feedback. I don't know why I find it so hard to get into my head that it's the photographer that needs the most improvement, not the equipment!
It's like an instant knee-jerk reaction; 'I don't like this photo' = Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

I must admit that focus settings didn't even cross my mind, nor did I understand them on my K-x before this thread. I only half understood Shake Reduction until the other day when I was troubleshooting some tripod shots (I didn't know that the K-x switches it off in 2 sec delay mode so I was wrong about the problem anyway).
Does SR work in Drive mode? I didn't think it would have time to 'lock'.

I shot the rally in Tv mode, on a hunch I switched SR off as I thought it wouldn't play well with panning and sort of tried to pre-focus the AF on the bit of road I expected the car to be so it would hunt less. It was getting thrown off by grass and also the speed cars were passing close by. I guess a monopod might have helped. I seemed to do particularly badly with Drive mode and was happier when I picked my moment and grabbed a single shot.

Excellent point, next time I should take a manual film camera out to do action, shoot Sunny16 and quit complaining. :p

After trying to get some shots with the 135mm M lens the other evening I have so much respect for old-school wildlife photographers; failing evening light that changes by the minute and makes you use a slower shutter & shallower DOF, the camera moves, the wildlife moves...

Hi

I dusted off my camera after a break of a few months and got out shooting some sporting events over the weekend. It was the first time I've tried events like that and it was a steep learning curve, though I did learn a lot from it.

Though I got a few shots I liked at a Marathon with my SMC M 135mm (which I'd hardly used before and is now my new favourite lens! :D), I also missed a few good ones that were just way too soft and was getting dejected thinking all my effort to get the shot with a fully manual lens was probably a waste of time when some guy next to me with a AF tele-zoom would probably have got the same by just pointing and hitting the button.

I switched to the kit DAL18-55mm to shoot some rally race cars with AF but was actually really disappointed with quality of the results, whereas the few I took with the 135mm were actually quite good. I was kicking myself for not persevering with it, I'd found it very difficult to frame the shots with the subject moving so quickly.

Would you actually *want* MF sometimes shooting action? I don't know if I just need better kit or better technique?

Kx - Recording Audio with Video

Turn off Image Stabilization, use manual focus (both features are noisy, very much so if using the internal mic).
The mic on the K-x is fine but pretty basic, as Adam says, you're better off using an external recorder if possible.

You know in the movies when they have a clapper-chalkboard and someone says "Take 25" or something and snaps it shut?
That's for syncing the audio and video tracks, you have the visual cue of the board closing and the 'snap' sound. Put the two at the same point and the following audio and video will be in sync.
Of course you can just stand in front of your camera and clap your hands or whatever at the start of each clip.

Exposure latitude and dynamic range are not the same thing.
Digital actually has a pretty narrow slide-like latitude.

What do you base that on?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the impression I got is that FF digital cameras are only now catching up to the IQ and dynamic range a of a modern fine grain low ISO 35mm film when scanned, and that MF is still far ahead.

"Trend towards smaller cameras with bigger sensors."
Like a small bodied FF SLR?

If the D800 is now within reach of the prosumer end of the market, next year or so there will be a mid-range FF and so on.
In the face of this competition, when FF is affordable, who would want to buy an APSC?
