Thanks VERY MUCH guys. I did some more head scratching and was watching a YT video where a guy is showing how to attach an M type lens to the Pentax DSLR. As soon as I saw the adapter he was using my memory clicked and it is exactly what my issue is, as you all explained. I have one of those thin adapers but can't find it right now so I will get one. The adapter I was trying to use (unsuccessfully) is a much thicker unit. It is Japanese and is labelled "For Pentax K/M"
Thanks again for helping me solve the problem.
I don't suppose you can help me remember where I hid that thin adapter away for safe keeping........
Never mind.
Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone!!
I have a K500 and I also have a number of M42 non Pentax lenses that I would like to use on the K500.
I know I have used a couple of these lenses before on an older Pentax DSLR and everything worked fine in manual mode.
The issue with the K500 is that these lenses will only focus close up. It is impossible to get Infinity focus.
I've looked for online information but have come up empty.
I have the M to K adapter and the Aperture Ring Function is set to Enable
Thanks for any input you may have on this.
Again Merry Christmas

Do I have a power problem??

My less than 1 year old K500 seems to have a very finicky appetite for batteries. I use AA alkalines, which I prefer, but for whatever reason, the camera has always indicated that the batteries need replacing when the individual cell voltage is still way up there at 1.447 volts. This is still a good battery as far as I'm concerned, and I reuse these (dead) batteries in other applications.
Do any of you experience a similar issue or do I possibly have a valid problem that needs to be addressed?

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter

This is by far the simplest and least expensive option. That way you only need one filter.
:)
OTOH, I personally prefer to permanently keep a 1A sky filter on all my lenses simply to protect the front glass on the lens. Filters are infinitely cheaper to replace than a lens should you accidently bang the front of the lens against something. DAMHIK !

ARREST

To stop; to seize; to deprive one of his liberty by virtue of legal authority.
Whether a detention was an investigatory stop or a full-blown arrest is a question of law subject to de novo review. See U.S. v. Diaz-Lizaraza, 981 F.2d 1216, 20-22 (11th Cir.'93). Courts have stated that '[i]n determining 'when' a person is arrested, we ask at what point, 'in view of all the circumstances surrounding the incident, a reasonable person would have believed he [she] was not free to leave.' ' U.S. v. Hastamorir, 881 F.2d 1551, 1556 (11th Cir.'89) (quoting U.S. v. Hammock, 860 F.2d 390, 93 (11th Cir.'88)); see also U.S. v. Vargas, 643 F.2d 296, 98 (5th Cir. Unit B'81); 2 John Wesley Hall, Jr., Search and Seizure 22:3 at p.87 (2d ed. '93). Strictly speaking, this particular formulation of the standard for determining whether an arrest has occurred is not a completely accurate statement of the law, for 'an investigatory stop is not an arrest despite the fact that a reasonable person would not believe he is free to leave.' (U.S. v. Hastamorir, 881 F.2d at 1556). This is so because even during an investigative stop, which by definition is not an arrest, it would be clear to a reasonable person so detained that he was not free to leave during the stop. See 2 LaFave, Section(s) 5.1(a) at 393 (1994 Supp. at 135).

Really nice shot with the fisheye mirror!!

As a comparison, here is a shot I took some years back using a Nikon Coolpix 4500 with a Nikon 7mm true fisheye lens threaded to the end of the non-removable lens. The camera was laying flat on its back, pointed straight up. I used the 10 second delay timer so I could position myself and my buddy in the picture. IIRC, the field of view with this is about 190 degrees. You can't hand hold the camera and NOT have part of you feet in the shot. LOL
This was taken on Onyx Peak near Big Bear, California, at 9000' elevation.

Thanks! I'm pretty pleased with it too.
I actually had my 10" Meade LX200 GPS sitting right next to me but they are a bit difficult to align in the daytime.

When I took the shots with the Pentax K500, I thought the one I posted was ok until I compared it with the same shot using my Sony HX100V superzoom, handheld at 30X zoom. I actually braced my arm against my fencepost, but no tripod.
Here is the shot from the Sony. This camera never ceases to amaze me, especially when you factor in the zoom capability.

I used Photoshop to crop the pic down and to turn the sky black, since I took the pic while it was still fairly light. My old Zeiss lens is stuck wide open at f2.8 and I used no filters or tele adapters at all.

I wonder if that K30, being rainproof and all that, would survive a light wash in the dishwasher?

I shot this right after I got the K500 using a Zeiss 180mm f2.8 lens. Metering was set to "SPOT", in Aperture mode. Beyond that I don't remember. Camera was on a tripod and I used a 2 second delay to eliminate any vibration. A bit of Photoshop was used to help out. The exif data is a bit sparse. :p

So much for the "water Resistance capability of the K-30. That's kind of a sad thing.

Thanks! I need to get mine repaired. The diaphragm is stuck open thankfully at 2.8.
The ring turns smoothly so something came uncoupled inside. I just don't know if it's worth the potential cost to repair.
It's perfectly useable the way it is. I just have to shoot at 2.8. Not a big deal.

K500 with a Zeiss (aus Jena) M42 180mm f2.8.
Early evening shot of the Moon, handheld
1/160 sec at f2.8.
I used Photoshop Elements 10 to turn the still bluish sky dark and slightly adjusted the contrast.

K30/K50/K500 .. Need Your Advice

While I certainly realize that everyone has their specific wants and needs, and mine probably differ from the mainstream, and that's OK. The thing I have against the OEM rechargeable battery packs is that they are proprietary and thus usually not available at a moments notice when the last one you had just ran down. This is NOT an issue with AA's which can be had at virtually ANY store. I use the Costco Kirkland AA type and find they are excellent and long lasting and inexpensive. I can buy 48 of them (12 reloads) for the cost of 1 OEM lithium pack. Yes they are heavier IF I decide to take them all along, which would never happen (for me).
As to the Weather resistance, I live in Southern California where it is almost always dry.
While I love the new fangled features of my K500, I have about 100 old film cameras and M42 lenses which will work with the K500 so old school is cool for me. Manual focus and zoom are great.
I really loved, and miss, the old split prism or rangefinder focusing screens.
