Nature Reflections on a Heron

Excellent sequence of the Heron (Great Blue ?) ....stalking the shallows for prey. That new 300mm Pentax telephoto lens of yours, appears to really do the job for nature shots.

It reminds of an encounter I had with a heron a few years ago.

My daughter was looking for mushrooms for a science project in a riverine forest that is nearby. There is a small prairie river that winds through the forest and she happened to observe a GB Heron doing exactly what your heron was doing...looking for lunch.

When she got back to the house, she mentioned it. I'm always ready to check out natural science so I whipped down to the river, fully expecting that the bird in question would be gone. But, no there it was, still stalking near the shore. I watched from a bit of a distance, then saw it 'freeze' and then very quickly strike. There was a lot of water splashing everywhere and I could see that the heron had speared a young (about 18 inch) Northern Pike with it's bill. It flipped the pike and swallowed it whole.

Made me grateful, that humans are bigger than Great Blue herons. :D

I like it. Dark and moody...looks like the 'boys' are assembling in this spot, to go to a secluded highway to do a bit of competitive exhibition of speed.

Very well done, truly a picture that is worth more than a thousand words...and also provides the viewer with a premonition of mass speeding tickets. :D

DA 10-17 FE usage tips/quirks/limitations

Quirky is a good description of the 10-17 Fisheye lens. I like it...but only use 10mm to around 15mm for 'novelty' fisheye photos. My favourite setting...is 17mm. It can be worked to provide some close to 'normal' wide angle shots. I use it with vintage cars to 'stretch' them out a bit. A lot of moving around is needed...by the photographer to ensure as much distortion is excised from the picture. I find if I physically move up and down...all the time looking through the viewfinder...I can find that sweet spot with this lens that works reasonably well as a wide angle.. I know all this sounds strange, but it seems to work.

DFA*50 1.4 coming

I have my Pentax D FA 50mm F 2.8 Macro and Pentax 50mm FA F 1.4 and my 40mm F 2.8 Limited. I'm very happy with them. All of them. I know they're not the latest and greatest but all three are excellent lenses in my humble opinion, particularly my 40 Limited, which by the way I use on both my ASP-C bodies and my K1....I use only the full frame and not the croped frame setting with this ASP-C lens. Works out really well.

I succumb to uncontrollable lens fever as much as the next guy...but I just can't see myself plunking down for the new 50mm which is supposed to be coming down the pike. When I've got three Pentax lenses...all with automatic focus...and yes it's a must have feature for my old eyes...why would I want a new lens in that most common of prime focal lengths ?

Wow...two wonderful photographs.

The first one looks as if it is very fine Art Deco commercial art...a poster advertising a 1920's Mediterranean beach resort comes to mind. Very elegant and serene.. I would frame it...

The detail and clarity in the second photograph is striking. If I were that Snowy Egret...I would order a number of 8 X 10's to distribute to friends and family...:D

I have taken out for walks ,,,more like pulls..:)..in minus 25 and colder. He's in heaven, other dogs and me meanwhile are freezing their.. .off. These northern dogs do prefer cold weather it seems.

Never had a Contax, but back in the film days I would go to a camera dealer who handled Canikon, Pentax Leica, Hassleblad and Contax. They had some interesting Contax G models...rangefinders along the Leica style. Very nice looking.

I was interested in Pentax and Leica at the store.

If Pentax made a HD DA 28mm f/2.8 Limited......

As 6BQ5 has said, I think any lenses Pentax brings out in the future, should work for both ASP-C and Full Frame. I have both ASP-C and FF bodies and use both sensor type bodies...K10D, K-5 and K-1 . I would like to be able to use any new Pentax lens without compromise on both ASP-C and FF... and there are a lot of Pentaxians out there, like me, that have similar needs.

A 28 mm is not wide enough. At least a 24mm...on a FF... would be more like it. I think Normhead said somewhere around 20 to 24mm.I agree. After thinking about it, I would prefer a 20mm range (FF). I have a 12-24 ASP-C Pentax lens..really like it, but at 12mm (ASP-C) it gets a bit 'too' wide for me. Think 12mm ASP-C translates to around 18mm FF.

F 2.8 also..

I have an 18-135 for ASP-C and the 28-105 for the k-1 as others do. They're great for general purpose lenses and have moderate wide angles. But like Oliver Twist said to Mr. Bumble...I want more.....well just a bit more (20mm).....:D

Are K lenses better than their M and A counterparts?

Not being an optical engineer, I don't know if modern lenses are better. I do know that my old (bought new in '84) Pentax 35-105 A Macro zoom lens is one very fine lens. Always happy with the picture quality and the construction, albeit heavy, is better than most of my modern lenses, I would say. Again I'm a lay person, wouldn't claim to be an expert in these matters..

Poll: Poll: Who will buy the new DFA*50mm on release?
Posted By lesmore49

I never buy anything on first release. I think it's unwise. I usually wait for about a year, maybe more. See how things go with the new product, see if there are any 'pattern' problems, see how well it performs, how durable it is. I avoid succumbing to the newest, latest, greatest...avoid the hype of something new, something shiny...wait till a few miles roll over on someone else's odometer.

The K-1 had been out for a year before I bit the bullet. In that time I checked on all the info I could, before making the final, informed decision.

How to solve K1/FF wide->short normal need (repeat question?)

That's great. Thank you for that info. I couldn't understand how the ASP-C lens would only be @ 15 mp, when the camera was set at full frame.

Thanks I'm going to try that. I was told on the forum that if I put a ASP-C lens , like the 12-24, even if I put the camera internal setting on full frame, not use the framed in the viewfinder, ASP-C setting that I will only get 15 mps, not the full benefit of the 36. something full frame sensor . Is this true ?

I'm not very technical. :D

When travelling light, what do you take?

We went on a trip to NL this past years. Packed relatively light for us. My carry on bag included my K5 body, my 18-135 lens, my 55-300 lens and my 360 flash, along with some memory cards and AA batteries that was pretty well it.

For the most part, just used the 18-135 lens...has a good general purpose range. Might do it again, but just take the K5, 18-135 and flash.

Igor123,

Very interesting thread that I only just came across. I'm in a similar situation. I have a K-1 and the Pentax 28-105, which is a fine lens. But I want something wider, while continuing to keep and use the 28-105 as a sterling walk around lens. I also have a Pentax 12-24mm lens that I use on my K10D and K-5. This lens is / has been phenomenal. It has spoiled me and is the lens that I compare all other wide angles. What I want is a faster (say F2.8) 12-24, but full frame lens.

The 24-70 F 2.8 Tamron/Pentax has not got me impressed enough to go out and buy one. The 15-30 yes, but boy is it pricey, not saying it's not worth it, but....

I hope thie thread keeps on rolling. Think a lot of Pentaxians are facing a similar decision. What to do.
