I am not a manual focuser. You don't have to be with this lens. The DOF is so wide that if you step down to f8 and focus around the middle of the ring. everything will be in focus. I took advantage of this deal and have been having some fun with it. I can't wait until WInter is over.

K30 Optimal Settings for Beginner

Heres how I would set the camera up to be mildly challenging to a newcomer and promote some hands on learning. 1.) Shoot in Av (aperture priority) 2.) Auto white balance. 3.) center weighted metering. 4.) set ISO at 400 and try to leave it there. 5.) set your kit lens at 35 or 50mm and leave it there. use it like a prime lens. 6.) go out and take 1,000,000 pictures manipulating your shutter speed by changing the aperture 90% of the time. Only changing the ISO if you absolutely have to. Try to keep your shutter speed at/faster than the focal length (35 or 50) for subjects that are still. try to keep it much faster for moving things.

You will learn the correlation of the settings and their effects on the image without being overwhelmed by all the settings at once.

Unless there is some new marketing going on Central Camera and Helix don't carry any (modern) Pentax. I live in Chicago and have never been able to put my hands on any Pentax item before purchasing it because NOBODY carries it. I hope this is changing. I wasn't able to go to the Meet n greet thing they did downtown last week. Was it any good?

2.) This photo taken on Weds 5/22/2012 conveys the desolation of the Sonoran desert. In my opinion one of the harsher environments in the World. The fragile stack of rocks which I found made me wonder how long they would remain, and what their purpose is.

3.) I have been coveting this lens as it is the perfect focal length and size for street photography.

Thanks for your generosity in putting on this contest. While I am not very active here, and don't enter many contests, this one seems tailor made for me after my recent trip and the prize.

Good luck to everyone :)

Day Pack/Carry-on Laptop and Gear

I'm sure there are as many differing opinions as there are packs available. I am in a similar situation as I am flying for the first time with my gear for a week long vacation soon. I'm going to be doing some street shooting and desert landscape. I also want to bring my macbook pro 15. I think I solved my challenge like this.

First, I already had the lowepro 200 fastpack. This will be my carry on with my camera and lenses in it. The top portion can carry assorted odds/ends like blower, charger, extra batteries, remote, filters, etc. The back pack will be better for the desert landscape shooting as it is easier to hike with also.

Now since I didnt think to spend the extra money before and get the 250 fastpack which has the laptop sleeve that left me with my next challenge. I solved that by getting the Timbuk2 classic messenger bag in the small size. This will be my second carry on bag. This will hold my macbook, external drive, assorted cords, my kindle, and assorted other stuff I may need on the plane. Additionally I have an insert for this bag and use this bag while shooting street as its smaller than the back pack and easier to access stuff while on the move.

The insert for the messenger bag plus my tripod will go in the single checked bag with all my other stuff. When hiking with the back pack I can rig it to carry the tripod in any of several ways.

I have a grip but dont use it much. It would make a very tight fit in the insert/messenger bag. I do carry a couple extra batteries though and could probably fit 10 extra.

Probably none of this helps you though but it has been a problem I have been working on for a month or so. I think I have it figured out where I can bring most of my gear. (see below in my sig)

Just started shooting street a month or so ago. I wanted to for a long time but took me a while to get over the hump so to speak. Heres on from a few weeks ago. From the hip. What do you think?

I think any of the popular wide angle lenses will give you exactly what you're looking for. I foyu look through the reviews on the lens database most of them will have the minimum focus distance listed. I just did a cursory search and found that most appear to be able to focus as close as 6-12" from the subject. The wide angle will give you the field of view you describe.

So now I'm curious. I shoot RAW, import into LR3, then export into my desktop. This switches it to JPEG. How much does the camera firmware and LR process it? Heres an example, including link with EXIF. I did nothing but import/export.

I just assume that every image is processed/edited, it's just part of the workflow with digital. The only time I denote anything special about my image is if I have done nothing to it. Then I will say that it's SOOC (Straight Out Of the Camera) When people ask for capabilities of certain equipment or lenses, the few times I have been able to help, I make a point to post SOOC shots.

But just in case the KatsEye focusing screens are popular and make screens specifically for Pentax cameras.

What you are referring to I believe is the focusing screen in the viewfinder. Our digital SLRs dont have those as theyre made to be used with auto focus lenses. Have no fear though because you can switch the viewfinder fairly easily with an old style with the focus assist.

Many 49mm filters will fit directly on the lens without interfering with the hood. My advice is go to a store and try them.

Going to the Las Vegas desert with my camera....

As to the gear I'm bringing I think I'm bringing everything except my M lenses (see signature below). I can fit it all in my Lowepro backpack easily. I generally like wide. I know I'm covering that with the 10-20 and the 15 but they really have different characteristics and the 15 is so small theres always room for it to tag along. Plus the 15 has much less flare.

I wish I had a better tripod though. I'm bringing the ever popular cheap Dolica I got as my first tripod. I do also have the Slik Pro 700dx which is so solid you can take tack sharp long exposure shots during an earthquake but the thing is sooo heavy.

Thanks for all the tips on handling the environment also. I dont think I just fell off the turnip truck, but I am a city slicker and don;t fret the environment much. I have thought of these things though and do consider the weight of their seriousness. Thanks for stressing the points.

I really don't worry too much about dust. I feel if I leave it alone it will leave me alone and havent had any major issues with dust on a sensor. Do I have to be extraordinarily careful when changing lenses or just exercise common sense? I also dont use filters just to protect my lens. I've never had a problem but I can scrape up a few if its considered essential. Is it?

Perhaps my favorite advice though is from Rio about sitting and observing and appreciating the subtlety. This applies to most everywhere and is something I have been overlooking as of late. I hit a dry spell and didnt shoot much at all over Winter. I've yet to find my "eye" this Spring. This piece of advice may be just what I have needed regardless of my pending vacation.
