K-1 mark II imminent

Not too much developement budget spent on MKii - fair enough. 1.5-2 year until we can expect a real update. A faster APS-C solution maybe before. Bring on lenses.
If my K1 fails today, I would definitely get a MKii to replace it. Decent marketing. On the other hand I would not sell K1 for K1 ii unless some internal spec is revealed to us with official release.

Show me the roadmap with the DA 100 WR and the HD DA 15, 21, 40, 70 before release. All these lenses replaced a previous DA lens and I have not seen them on a roadmap. So: 1. Pentax can release whatever they want, 2. they have done so before, 3. if you are replacing a lens, you don't tell the world in advance that the previous lens is becoming obsolete. Obviously Pentax is not in the position to replace a lot of lenses with new designs, as they are filling gaps.

---------- Post added 15-02-18 at 11:49 AM ----------

A 5.6/560 is not a $11000 lens, Pentax' suggested retail price is less and the current price reflects the real value of their current design - a lot of air between 4k and 11k. What good is your longest tele photo lens when your top camera cannot make full use of it? There was a need for the DA 560 otherwise there would be no reason to release it in the first place. Design and performance are not convincing, so they are selling it for a fairly low price now. That would be a sad story. A positive story would be that the have soemthing else in mind.

How many more little lenses can Pentax make?

DFA 15-30 only requires large filters and there is no modern FF wide angle on the lineup, weight is well balanced. DFA* 70-200 is heavier than the competition, but still fine.

Teleconverter challenge Sigma vs Kenko vs Tamron X1.4

Third party TCs on old FA* glass - nothing really dedicated.
Neither Pentax nor Tamron 1.4TCs could convince me on DA*300. A longer * lens would be much more interesting.
I can see a need for a decent FF TC for Pentax at least.

DA* 300mm F4 vs Pentax-F* 300mm F4.5 autofocus

With foot DA* is lighter than F* with foot - all lenses weigh around 1kg, nothing to worry about. The FA* will be at least 14 years old, the F* at least 25 years.
If you are happy with your lens, keep it - go for CLA, otherwise go for DA* or wait for something new.
I have experienced on A* tele lenses that internal reflections cause trouble on digital cameras much more than I am used to from my DA glass. Just a general observation - no direct comparison for different 300mm lenses.

The 1.4 TC did not convince me on the DA*300. A FF compatible or high-end TC is missing completely in Pentax land. Same for the Tamron 1.4 TC with SDM support.

Third option besides the DFA 150-450 is to go somewhere else for tele stuff.

DFA*50 1.4 price

Price will be $1499, street price $1399 and drop to $1199 within the next two years. +/-10%.
The marked will not allow for a higher price and Pentax will not settle for less. Price was most likely a major spec during development.
Performance is what is of interest as well as delivery date.

It is time to deliver lenses Pentax. The year of the primes has passed and we only get a 50 on the horizon. An unfinished 50 is worse than no 50, but no 50, no 85 and no sign of the high spec wideangle puts Pentax in NoNo land. The wait may be over in two weeks, but I don't think we will see more than a single lens and some unspecific announcements for the futuree. For a manufacturer that is not replacing existing high spec lenses, but building a new line of such, more speed would help a lot.

Maybe the MK ii stands for a camera that was intorduced two years ago. Currently the news is not overwhelming, but a nice addition if you have you want to buy into a K1.
Looks like Pentax let go of the ii in the same, so the real successor needs a more creativ name.
Time to concentrate on LENSES.

What is the question... is the DA 560 worth $4000 or less. Why is a discontinued Sigma lens selling for more? Who bought the DA 560 after the price came down... and do you think it was worth it. A redesign of a 560 would not be announced, as it would kill sales of the current version. Was the 100 Macro WR actually on the roadmap before it was released? Were the DA HD lenses on the roadmap?

Pentax is allowed to replace a lens with or without roadmap. They have done so in the 70s, 80s, 90s, ... the FA* lenses you mention later were released in the 90s - not really modern perspective.

There is and there was no FF compatible 1.4x/2x TC from Pentax. Don't mention the 1.7x TC now.

Pentax may still be committed to buy 36MP sensors from Sony for the time being. I don't see the EOL as long as D750 and Co. are still around with smaller pixel count. Keeping the sensor, but upgrading camera speed and features sounds more reasonable than going for a new sensor in a MkII. A 45MP camera costs twice as much as our current K1. Yes, Pentax would move closer to the big boys w.r.t. pixel count, but they need more than pixels. A 45MP K1 would also get into 645 territory. I do not dislike the idea of a 45MP K1ii, but I do not see it. All I want is great lenses.

We discussed the pros and cons of the Sigma 4.5/500 and the Pentax DA 560 at length. When discussions were hot, the DA 560 was more expensive than the Sigma - for the longest time the Pentax was $1000-2000 more than the Sigma. Currently the DA 560 is $1000 less than the Sigma. Pentax sells for $4000, Sigma for $5000. So, I am wondering whether this makes the 560 more tempting for anyone.
Whenever Pentax offers discounts, you can expect a new camera/lens. What is your opinion.

Long ago you could get Canon FD mount lenses in L and non L version. At that time there were different classes of lenses available from the camera manufacturer to choose from with the same specs for f-stop and aperture were the same. Today, all Canon L lenses are made in Japan ( I think) so there are ceratin features as well as quality control and pride involved in making special lenses. Sigma offers sports and contemporary designs witht he same features and explains differences.
In Pentax land, we see lenses with high-profile (large aperture, weather sealing, ... full package) denoted with *. Theree are not enough lenses in Pentax land to compare for instance a 2.8/70-200 with * against a 4/70-200 without *. So at the end of the day, we can only assume that * lenses are special somehow in their making.
DA*55 has nice rendering, but is not a star wide open, looking at sharpness.
DFA*70-200 is a nice lens and probably the best Pentax can do in this range. Build quality is nice, special glass is required, ...
DA*300 is a nice lens with special glass, performs well
DFA100M WR is also a nice lens, no SDM, no focus limiter, no extreme features - this lens is a star
DFA50M is a nice lens, very sharp, but build quality is not star like
I am waiting for DFA85 with big * and something long with *

get an f-stop backpack (smallest version is a good start) and adjust the interior to your camera needs. you always need more space while travelling, so an adjustable backpack is rather nice.
f-stop Guru UL fits K1 in bascially any ICU combination.

Likelihood of there ever being a 35mm digital back/converter/retrofit ever?

Yes, it is possible. No, it won't work well. Yes, it will be really expensive. Nobody will buy it.

All those medium format adaptations suffered from misalignments. Did you ever work with one of these cameras? Kodak DCS cameras had a swinging sensor inside - nothing really stable. Oh yes and how do you connect to the camera electronics... You can use medium format backs with lenses of almost any kind by adding an ALPA shutter module in between. System works very well, but the price is a little bit off from an ME Super. Same thing in 35mm format would still be very expensive.

In two years you may put a cell phone camera in your ME Super and call it digital, but it will have nothing to do with 35mm format or anything real.

UV Photography with Pentax DSLRs

Wow, some truth and a lot of heresay about UV photography. In order to capture UV radiation, your lens and your sensor need to be able to collect UV radiation. Regular lenses will not pass UV radiation. Some let a little more pass than others, but for real UV work they all have trouble. There are special lenses that let UV pass even down to 250nm. There are lists of other glass that for one reason or the other lets a little more UV pass than other lenses. There are forums for that. Coastal optics makes the perfect lens, but your students budget will explode. UV fluorescence is capture in the visible specturum. Here coatings matter. In the worst case your camera has a UV blocking low pass filter glass that blocks UV light. UV is not easy.
Infrared: Any low pass filter infront of the sensor will block IR light. The sensor may capture IR up to 1000nm. Beyond that oou need a special sensor - no thermal signal from regular silicon based sensors.
Pinhole is the smartest idea I read in this post. No lens, no glass - cool. Refraction will blurr sharpness, but you should be able to collect a signla - that said, not much UV light is emitted from most objects and the pin hole aprture will be very small.
K1 worked OK with costal opticas at 254nm and 365nm for me. To capture only UV you want a cutoff filter for all visible or fluorescent light. Have your student do a lit review for you in forums and on the basics of UV photography. It is fun and you always get some results.

The sensor or the pixelcount is not the major problem of the K1.
The MKii may improve on shutter shock, general speed, AF and tracking, fps, shake reduction.

There is glass and then there is glass. IR sensitivity is limited by silicon based sensor not the glass, UV sensitivity requires quartz glass lenses.

Pentax full frame system compared to Canon or Nikon

Figure out why you want fullframe. After you have the answer, you can start to figure out what you need, want, prefer in a system.

K3ii and whatever comes next in APS-C from Pentax is a huge step forward from K5! You are right that you will have to look for all new lenses, more expensive, bigger ... for a fullframe system - a complpetely new feeling. It is pointless to go for the K1 without upgrading the lenses to fullframe very soon thereafter. The different angle of view between FF and APS-C makes it very difficult to slowly/gradually move from one format to the other.
Save yourself a lot of money now and look at the K3ii (quite inexpensive right now) or whaterver Pentax releases soon. You have not maxed out APS-C yet in my opinion, so upgrade your K5 and stick to APS-C, unless you are really up for fullframe. Keep your glass and maybe add the new DA* wide angle zoom - something very difficult to find in FF unless you go very, very large.
I had the K5, sold it for K3; sold K3 for K1 and got a bunch of new lenses. Size-, weight-, investmentwise K1 is a different world. I even consider getting an APS-C for travel/backup as well as further reach and faster speed. K1 feels dimensions feel like an old medium format system, big lenses, a lot of equipment to haul around... Image quality is much better than medium format film even at low iso. APS-C provides excellent image quality and comparing to Canon/Nikon only Pentax offers a full range of APS-C lenses. the story is different for for fullframe. K1 is doing a lot of things very well. The number of new lenses is quite limited and the new primes that will come soon are probably great, but big, heavy and costly.

Image sensor quality Pentax K1 vs Nikon D850 vs Sony A7rIII

Everyone is happy, the K1 excels. The FA77 is blamed for most of the trouble.
Noone should expect a 36MP camera to perform worse than 4x MP cameras with even smaller pixel pitch. Why not compare D810 with K1 - basically the same sensor inside. Differences wrt to sensor noise become minute.
Don't get too excited. K1 is nice, but be honest to yourself, it is not better than the rest just because you can look better in one category.

Lower spec K1

Different prism finder, more plastic, smaller sensor, lower fps rating... the standard stuff. Don't eliminate features, but offer less comfort.
K1 will come down in price as soon as the K1ii shows up. I don't see Pentax offering two FF cameras plus an DSLR APS-C line. I would expect one FF camera, one fast acting APS-C with very similar layout as the FF - smaller sensor, faster fps, improved AF.... downsizing should happen on APS-C bodies.
