Thank to all for looking. It was a fun outing and although we were only inside with the lemurs for 6-8 minutes, it was worth it. They were very playful and much softer than I expected. The grandkids loved them.

We had a nice visit to the Topsey Exotic Ranch and Drive-thru Safari this past week. There were a variety of animals to photograph.

The ostriches stood guard at the gate.

The camel came up close and posed. He would later try and take my granddaughters whole bag of food right out of her hand.

Ready for his close up.

Coming to greet us...

...and posing for a photo.

And finally, a mother goat and her kid. Just too cute.

We enjoyed a special Lemur Encounter at the Austin Aquarium this past week. We had to wait over an hour for the lemurs to wake from their naps but once we were able to go in it was worth the wait.

These were all with my K1. I also have a K3 but the K1 is much better in low light. These were all without flash. The first two were with my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and the last was with my Tamron 28-25 f/2.8. The last one was cropped some but was shot at 28mm. I do like the shots I can get at 28mm while sitting behind the basket. With my K3 I used to pull out the Sigma 10-20 on occasion to get wide angle shots.

Here are a couple shot with the Tamron at 28mm. The first is from the same game as the previous post. The second was a recent girls' game.

My wife and I went to the final home football game for Furman University this past weekend. As we were leaving I took a couple of shots of the lake and belltower. Then we heard a mockingbird and after a little searching I was able to find him and get a few shots. All with the K1 and Sigma 50-500.

My wife and I went to the last home football game at Furman University this afternoon. I love afternoon games since I can use the Bigma and still get good shutter speeds. All of these were shot from the stands at the game.

Dropping back to pass.

No where to run here.

Just after an interception.

I swung around quickly to shoot this catch that led to a field goal.

My wife texted me while on a walk near by when she saw a Great Blue Heron and I drove over to see if he was still there. I ended up taking shots for about an hour using the Bigma on my K1. Here are a couple of favorite shots.

I've seen very few hummingbirds this season but they have been frequent visitors to the feeder this past week or so. I was able to take several photos today. The feeder is outside a window that I can open to get the photos. Twice today a pair of hummingbirds chased each other and one flew into the house and then out after I opened a couple of doors.

Due to Hurricane Florence our Friday games were moved to Thursday and the start times moved back to 6:30 instead of 7:30. That meant I could shoot with the Bigma. In this first shot the defense got to the QB in the endzone for a safety.

In the second quarter I switched to the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. Here a receiver pulled in a pass and eluded several tackles to score and then celebrate.

Another receiver went up over the defenders to score this TD with 8 seconds left in the first half and we led 37-7.

I teach many of the athletes that I shoot and they love looking at the photos. I've had to tell some of them that if I catch them looking at photos while they are supposed to be doing their classwork that I will not take photos of them at the next game. That usually works, especially with the cheerleaders.

Yes, I have a AF 540 flash that works well. I have used HSS at times and it works well. The shots you posted look great.

Hi, jake14mw

1) What setting do you use for focus? I am trying to choose between center point and Auto 5
I use center point most of the time but have also used 33 point. I need to try the other options. The main thing is I do have my camera set to use the AF rear button to focus and once I got used to it I like it much better.

2) Do you use a Monopod?
I'm like richfam, I do use monopod when using the Bigma most of the time but sometimes will even shoot it handheld when there is lots of light. My main lens is usually the Sigma 70-200 and on the K5iis it worked really well. I have to crop more with it on the K1 since it is full frame. I also use a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 for closeup shots of cheerleaders, crowd, sideline shots, etc.

3) What mode do you shoot in? I have experimented with AV, M, and was thinking of TAV.
I usually shoot TAv when there is plenty of light and set it to something like 1/800 to 1/1250 and f4 to f6.3.
I also switch to manual mode as the sun goes down and the lights come on. I drop to something like 1/320 to 1/500 and f2.8 to 3.5 or so. I also use a flash frequently so then it is set to 1/200 and I set the flash in manual mode to 1/4 or 1/8.

4) What's the highest ISO you use?
On my K5iis I tried to stay under 3200 but would use 6400 at times. You just need to experiment and see what you like. On the K1 I can use 6400 with no problem and have it set to use 6400 as the max in TAv mode. I still prefer 1600-3200 as much as possible.

5) Advice on field positioning?
Like richfam said, move around and try different angles. It can depend on what the school will allow. I teach at our High School and can shoot from anywhere and will sometimes go into the Press Box to get some shots as well as in the stands.

I like shooting from behind the endzone as the team is getting close to scoring but the referees can get in the way. Last night we stopped our opponent from scoring and I decided to stay behind the endzone for the first few plays of our offense for a different view. This shot shows some pressure coming. The QB threw quickly to a WR and it resulted in an 82 yard TD. I missed the catch since I was behind the linemen but I liked this shot. I also git a shot of the throw and the team celebrating.

I will kneel some but you do have to be ready to move. Last night I had to move pretty quickly to get out of the way once. When the player starts to get bigger in the viewfinder it is time to move. :)

6) I am surprised by how difficult it is to keep up with the action on pass plays. You don't know where it's going, and getting focus on the eventual receiver is very tough!
This takes a combination of practice, learning to anticipate what could happen, and luck. Obviously you have a particular player you would concentrate on so you can follow him and be more likely to catch the play. I have watched our team enough that I can often guess who might get the throw. A few times the QB actually told me where he planned to throw next. Still, most of my best shots were from just being lucky enough to be in the right spot and looking at the right player.

7) What other tips do you have?
I agree 100% with richfam, shoot other games if you can. Shooting JV for me has several advantages. One is that they start at 6pm instead of 7:30 so there is more light. It can be harsh at times so that means having to watch when shooting into the sun. JV is also a bit slower so you can follow the action a bit more. There may be fewer passes but the passes that are attempted are usually more predictable and shorter routes. It is also generally more relaxed so you usually have more freedom to move around. I've shot scrimmages where I was allowed to be on the playing field.

Once you've shot some be sure and post your favorites here.

We were on the road last night and the game was a nail biter. We ended up scoring in the final five minutes to take a 1 point lead and then held on for the win. We are 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 1967. We had an 82 yard TD pass for our first score but the rest of the game was a pound it out type of game.

After only winning one game last year we are 3-0 to start this season. Here are a few of my favorite shots from this week. Most are with the Bigma in the first quarter. I switched to the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 after the first quarter.

This one was with the 70-200.

We had our first football game of the year so I took my Bigma. I was able to use it during the first quarter or so while there was still plenty of sunlight.

Thank you. I enjoy shooting football, especially in the early part of the season when there is more light. I shoot for our high school website (which I manage) so I have the freedom to post what I want. I was talking with the photog from the local paper and he was saying that the paper has told them to limit the number of action shots to 10 with the rest (usually 35-50) of the crowd, cheerleaders, band, coaches reactions, etc. I was looking at the shots this morning from the paper website and noticed that the freelance photographers had 10 or so action shots but the staff photographer had about half action shots.

Anyway, here are a few more from the evening. I'm hoping to shoot some with the Bigma this Friday since it is a home game and I can bring in more equipment. This was my first football game with the K1. I bought it after last season and used it for basketball. I also use my K3 for wide shots and closeup shots of the crowd or cheerleaders. The full gallery is here.

The QB had nowhere to go on this play.

After a score the ensuing kickoff was returned for an apparent TD but a holding penalty called it back. The same player, #11, caught a TD pass on the resulting series and also pulled in a pass for the 2 point conversion. This is a shot of the kickoff return.

I love being able to try different angles. I got this shot on a drive that resulted in a TD but didn't get a shot of the score since the referee was right in front of me.

We took a trip to the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC this weekend. Since the photo rules were no flash in the house itself I took my K1 with a Sigma 28-75 f/2.8 lens and carried my Pentax 50mm f/1.4. Many of the rooms were pretty dark so I was pleased with the high ISO performance. This one was of the library at f/2.8, 1/80th, and ISO 6400.

This was with the Pentax 50mm at f/2.2, 1/125th, and ISO 4000.

Outside shots were a bit easier.

And finally, part of the Chihuly at Biltmore art exhibit.

Our tennis team hosted a playoff game this afternoon and did well only dropping a handful of games throughout the match. I shot with my K1 and Bigma lens since there was plenty of light.

The weather finally warmed up a but and felt more like spring this week. Our girls' soccer team had a big match Thursday at home. They have never beaten this team and lost 2-0 on their field a few weeks back. There was plenty of light so I pulled out the Bigma to use with my K1.

I did manage to get a shot of the first goal.

We went on to win the match 4-2.
